AFOLguy1970 Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 This review certainly validates the desire to purchase the set. Although it is not as tall as some of the others, it does seems to fill out in the back more with the patio and other features. It appears to be the most detailed of any of the modulars. My hope is that Lego produced many of these, because it seems like there is a LOT of interest in this set. I plan to order it Jan 1. Maybe the "good" news about the January release is that it gives me a chance to focus on getting the Pet Shop and Grand Emporium while they are still around. Then, the hope is to get this one and then go after the Town Hall sometime in the spring. This is going to be an expensive month or two coming up.... Quote
Holodoc Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 I wonder if the one who voted "below average" has balls enough to stand up and explain him(her?)self why he voted that way. Quote
Herky Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 very cool set, but aaaahhhh, this giant tease is making me want to skip the rest of November and December and get right to January...ugh I hate waiting, great review! Quote
Off the wall Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 (edited) I wonder if the one who voted "below average" has balls enough to stand up and explain him(her?)self why he voted that way. It's me! Just think it looks like something that belongs in 'Friends'. I don't like the use of space in the design. Don't like the colors. This is a subjective thing. Not like you said 2 + 2 = 4 and I said 'no', it equals 7. I try and grade on a curve, and in my humble opinion, it's below the other modular buildings. If you like it, be happy. The voting has the percentages of the mayors race in my hometown in Michigan. :-) So, there you go. No hard feelings, I hope. Edited November 18, 2013 by Off the wall Quote

Go back and read my first comment in this thread. My opinion should have been obvious to even a casual observer. Should, unless I follow the majority, immediately come on line and post a comment directly linking my comment to a vote, even when it's pretty obvious what I think? Chill, folks, this is Lego. It's certainly something we can have different opinions about. Edited November 18, 2013 by Off the wall Quote
humanvege Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Thanks for the great review. This modular is absolutely beautiful. I love the colors! I am saving up my money and will purchase this set as soon as it is released. I agreed that if you can only afford one modular at the moment this should be the set to get. I own a few of them and personally this is the most exciting set of all. Quote

I reacted on your North Korean comment - being involved in student/youth politics I have heard that comment and it brothers (communism, capitalism etc.) a lot. Quote
Off the wall Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 (edited) The 'Friends' comment was just expanding of what I had previously said. I will go back and change 'North Korea' to 'the mayors race In my hometown where I grew up in Michigan' as it is just as applicable. Any vote that's over ninety percent is questionable in my opinion. Unless the question is something like 'should you put a puppy in a microwave?' Then, you should get well over ninety percent vote 'no' By the way, that's not a hypothetical. Some kids here in Georgia did stick a puppy in a microwave. Edited November 18, 2013 by Off the wall Quote

As we are talking about LEGO, I believe any opinion is welcome, all feedbacks are precious to help TLG improve, and us, to like or not like official sets, discuss best practices and improvement/different ideas... I love the new 10243 Parisian Restaurant and I enjoy reading different opinions. Quote
mpoh98 Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Wow...now I really want this set. Fantastic review! Quote
Off the wall Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 SwissBrick Thanks for the comment. I really enjoy Jamie's work. The Parisian Restaurant just doesn't do it for me. My opinion should not diminish anyone's enjoyment of the PR. I have an opinion. It's subjective. Others shouldn't feel the need to have dissenting votes identify themselves. Phrases like '.....have the ba---' aren't appropriate. This is Lego! Some appear to be looking for unanimity on what is basically a matter of personal taste. If you don't want less than 'I'm thrilled with it and it's the best ever', then don't give me the option of voting for anything less or don't have a poll to begin with. Geesh, this is Lego, not politics. Quote
CardinalBricks Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Is the box the normal $100 box size (ie the Battle of Endor, Public Transport Station, Dino HQ, etc)? Quote
kermit Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Great detail review. Is it truly confirmed that it will be available on Dec 13th for early purchase for vip`s. Quote
Cirkit Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Does anybody else look at the 'Boyfriend' and think of the guy from the Johan coffee commercials? And his ring.. the one to rule them all.. It's a beautiful looking restaurant set packed full of detail and I like it. The fold out bed and that little balcony with the mini-bar are excellent. Love the planters there. Sham that that one door wasn't given a nob. That's a easy fix thanks to those spare parts! Thanks for the review. I really wish I could get this set.. maybe a Christmas item for the whole family to build.. ooh-hoo that will be fun! Quote
SpacySmoke Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Sham that that one door wasn't given a nob. That's a easy fix thanks to those spare parts! I suspect the main reason there is no doorknob is because you can't put a plate on that side of the door; it has to be on the side that swings outward from the door frame. Since this door swings inward, the doorknob would have to be on the inside of the apartment instead of the outside like the others. Quote
dj2005 Posted November 19, 2013 Author Posted November 19, 2013 Thanks for the great review! January 1st..., may you come soon I'm wondering if the small kitchen window on the richt-handside of the restaurant will be covered if placed next to another modular building. If possible, would you be so kind to show us a picture of a set-up with another modular? Thanks! I would have loved to include 10243 next to other modulars in the review, but this is my first modular. The window occupies the 7th and 8th studs counting from the back of 10243. I hope this helps. Is the box the normal $100 box size (ie the Battle of Endor, Public Transport Station, Dino HQ, etc)? It is the same size as the 10223 Kingdoms Joust box ($120 USD; ~1,600 piece set) but 10243's box has about 20% more depth. I suspect the main reason there is no doorknob is because you can't put a plate on that side of the door; it has to be on the side that swings outward from the door frame. Since this door swings inward, the doorknob would have to be on the inside of the apartment instead of the outside like the others. Unless you two are posting about a different door, 1 x 1 round plates can be attached to both sides of the door. Quote
Freddy Bricker Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Maybe the reason there was no doorknob was because their was limited space for a minifigure and having a doorknob would "bump" the figure? Quote
SpacySmoke Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Unless you two are posting about a different door, 1 x 1 round plates can be attached to both sides of the door. This must be different door than the one I'm seeing in your pics if it can *actually close* with 1x1 round plates attached to both sides. Quote

Is that really true Kermit, .. where did you get this confirmed... (link)? And if so, there will be a lot of AFOLS sitting on a large couch watching the just built Parisian Restaurant on the table in front of them......now and then catching a glimpse of the Polar Express or National Lampoons Christmas Vacation on TV.... I think i'll be one of those... i will be ordering on on the 13th of december, if it is available then!!Greetz, LegoSjaak Quote
Redhead1982 Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Great detail review. Is it truly confirmed that it will be available on Dec 13th for early purchase for vip`s. If that is true (I know some sets were available to VIPs about 2 weeks before the official release of the set), is that offer valid for S@H or also in LEGO stores? i will be ordering on on the 13th of december, if it is available then!! jtr Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 great review and in my oppion the best set this year, if it comes out dec 13. it's a must buy for me - i really cant wait Quote
Brick & Mortimer Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 ... The window occupies the 7th and 8th studs counting from the back of 10243. I hope this helps. ... Thanks, this helps a lot! So the kitchen window will not be covered by a neighbouring building, because buildings following the modular 'standard' always have 8 clear studs (counting form the back)*. *According to this excelent article: http://amodularlife.wordpress.com/2010/06/12/modular-standards-for-lego-city-buildings/ Quote
Ophrys Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 (edited) When I learned that a "Parisian Restaurant" will be available, I thought about many things but not really to the set finally proposed. And I was surprised and first disapointed. I'm working in Paris and for my opinion, a Parisian restaurant should not have this type of architecture, never this green colour, and should be more in adequation with the Hausmannian style, as well illustrated by the amazing Snaillad's "Avenue Saint Jacques" MOC (see here). However, if I do not focus on the Parisian style, this set remains quite beautiful with delightful details and I'm looking forward to have the possibility to buy it, even two in order to add one floor and to use numerous interesting parts for distinct MOCs.
