MrNumbskull13 Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 Hi everyone, I noticed a lot of people are buying 3rd party tires. I don't have the money for that and I was wondering if anyone has came up with any ways to increase grip on official Lego tires. :) I was thinking you could lightly roughen them up with sand paper since sandpaper makes things rougher and rougher materials create more friction. I haven't tried yet but if I do I'll share the results. Thanks for any ideas in advance! :) Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 The most obvious thing that comes to mind is a rubber band along the circumference of the wheel. Quote

Besides, most third party tires are for off road, and have a deep tread, and a rubber band has the opposite, plus it could rotate around the tire unless it has the right tension. If I remember correctly, I've done that before and it fit perfectly, but performance really depends on the terrain Quote

If you use a band at high tension it should stay on. Quote
TasV Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 (edited) I got the kids at school to test the grip (traction) of a range of Lego tires and the Losi Rock Crusher Micros and TBH there wasn't a lot of difference in grip between them. Have you seen this: http://philohome.com/traction/traction.htm ? Edited August 17, 2013 by TasV Quote
Lakop Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 Could it be down to weight? The weight of a vehicle has a lot to do with tyre grip. Of course the weight would need to be in the right place. H Quote
EyesOnly Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 Weight and center of gravity is most certainly important factors. Quote
allanp Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 I think people who do some serious slot car racing often spin the wheels lightly against some sand paper, they say it gives them more grip. Quote
Zerobricks Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 Weight and center of gravity is most certainly important factors. Weight doesnt improve grip, the traction coefficient is same... Quote

Phoxtane Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 You'll have to increase the surface area of the tire's contact patch somehow. A tight enough rubber band, as mentioned earlier, would do the trick. If tight enough, it could compress the tires in towards the hub and possibly give more surface area, I think. Quote
MrNumbskull13 Posted August 17, 2013 Author Posted August 17, 2013 Thanks for the ideas people! But I'm looking for ways to increase the grip of the actual tire tread, not ways to stop the tire from slipping around the wheel, although that's ok because it will be helpful to other people. :) Quote
Zerobricks Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 Put them on power puller rims, you get a wider tyre, therefore a higher traction area, and a higher chance of wheels catching up on something to crawl up. Quote

I saw you came up with that for your Rock Crawler Panther! It's a great idea and seems to work extremely well. Only problem is I don't own any power pullers or 94.8 wheels and tires, the biggest I have is the smaller technic racing wheels with 81.4 tires. Quote
SNIPE Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 (edited) Maybe glue sandpaper, non slip strips onto the tires, some glue is easier to remove on rubber and there are ways to get rid of other types of glue from rubber too but im not sure how effective they are some strips have adhesive backing so there will be less glue to remove. You can also harden the tire by filling it with some pattern of technic/system brick which curves around the rim. Theres always technic rubber tracks too which may fit on some rims. Kwon Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 If you weight more on wheel you can get more grip :) Quote
