I bought two crawlers 9398.

At one with the differentials all right,

but when I opened second I was very upset to find them differentials with notches ...

Why TLG prodycing this type of differentials that spoil other gear?

Who knows, if i write a letter, will TLG send me good differentials?

I'm doing a review My Brickshelf,

but in this fact I was very frustrated : (

Sorry for my bad English.

Yeah, lego change their parts all the time and used to from the start, unless it goes not work lego may send out a replacement.

Lego usually test them however so this is a little odd.

The three teeth you highlighted are different from the others.

So my guess that it's a mistake.

I checked two of my own differentials and they don't have those "wider" teeth...

Hi vrb

I just checked two of mine from the 8265 Loader, they are the same as the one on the left. It looks like TLG changed these to give full depth tooth engagement. You have one of the old type.

the teeth are not wider, they are just the same as the rest with the top pointy bit removed, you notice that there is a second step down in the diff on the left. the one on the right does not have the second deeper step moulded in. as Paul.P says the one on the right allows for full depth gear engagement. it may be that the one on the left can 'jump' out of mesh if too much load is applied??

Many people are unaware that there are two different models of new differentials.

In previous years, all I could see that in the series Technic Limited Edition were "good" differentials, and other sets had "bad".

Yes, the main problem in this.

Does the old version slip in 9398?

Soon i will test and report in this theme about, how "bad" type differentials work in 9398.

Because i don't have now time to build second crawler :) And this report will add in my 9398 review.

Sorry for my bad english.

My differentials are like that. I think the secondary notch is cutting into the tops of the gear teeth, allowing you to slip in a 12t bevel gear more easily.
