Since I've done reviews on EB about the 9348 and 9349 minifigure sets, I got to thinking about what kinds of minifigures I'd put together in a set. I haven't got an idea at the moment, but I'll extend that question to you guys, with the following parameters:

  • any figures, except those in licensed themes are allowed;
  • no restrictions on part colours (within reason);
  • a maximum of 22 minifigures;
  • a mix of minifigure accessories (22 glow-in-the-dark bikes, for example, is cheating);
  • would retail at around the same price (GBP 39.99 or equivalent).

If you want to known what minifigures people want would could check this topic:

Collectible minifigures allow for a little bit more eccentricity than the education sets I guess but I think there's definitely some overlap between the 2 topics.

That said, to answers your question I would like to see a education set that offers a little bit more variety in potential careers than the usual postman, garbageman, policeman, fireman, construction worker etc...

For example, I think a set could include the following:

- a teacher (with book and chalkboard) and pupil (with desk)

- a reporter (with microphone) and his/her cameraman/woman

- a judge (with robe, wig and gavel) and court reporter (with 'typewriter')

- a scientist and his/her assistant (lab coats) around microscope and computer

- a store clerk (in apron/uniform) with a customer around a groceries conveyor belt and cash register

- a paper boy with blue bike and newspaper stack

- an architect with architect desk and blueprints

- a veterinarian (similar outfit to a doc but a different logo) with a dog crate, dog and cat.

- a couple of hikers, each with different colors backpack, wearing shorts, one could have camera the other a walking stick

- new parents (regular minifig folks) with a microfig as baby and maybe a stroller

I know it's not quite 22 but it's a start

(Note: I am not suggesting any new pieces, conveyor belt, microscope, chalkboard etc would be brick built)

I can see where there's some overlap, but this is really about putting a whole set of figures together. Some people (including me) weren't so keen on the line-up of the newer sets.

That's a good start, though.

Understood! The thing is these sets are part of the "Lego Education" brand which sets are intended toward a specific learning area.

My disappointment with the current set is that it is actually mostly re-packaging minifigs that are available in other sets (for example: fireman, police and nurse are in the "Rescue Services Set") I think this is on purpose from Lego so that educators with limited resources can still have access to those figs.

Note that the suggestions I made previously were taking into account that these are education sets and that's why I was focusing mainly on different the different "careers" not yet available that I think could be interesting teaching about (and I'm sure I forgot plenty ;).

I would like something like 22 civilians. Ranging from farmers, merchants, blacksmiths, nobility (besides king/prince/queen/princess but that might be harder to pull off). And whatever medieval workers existed.

I've just put some ideas down, and here's what I'd initially go for (in alphabetical order)...

  • Astronaut (2) - male + female mid-90s style, with gold visors and white oxygen tanks.
  • Businesspeople (3) - two males and one female in suits. No gender biases.
  • Chef (1) - male, pretty much like the one in 9348.
  • Doctor (1) - male with stethoscope torso. Perhaps comes with brown suitcase.
  • Emo teen (2) - male + female.
  • Government agent (2) - both male and shady-looking.
  • Hippie chick (1) - think "Elsa" hair and pastel colours. Would come with a pedal bike.
  • Kids (2) - one male and one female, made to look like actual children.
  • Nurse (2) - both female: imagine the S1 Cheerleader's head on the S1 Nurse's body.
  • Patient (1) - female in a gown (probably with a slope for legs).
  • Secret agent (1) - male, less sinister-looking than the government agents. Comes with attache case (regular grey suitcase with line prints).
  • Singer (1) - along the same lines as the S2 Pop Star, perhaps with a dress instead.
  • Singer's manager/agent (1) - male in a grey pinstripe suit: wealthy without being cheesy-looking.
  • Teacher (1) - female with reddish brown ponytail hair, white shirt and a red apple.
  • Waitress (1) - exactly like the one in 9348.

That gives an even balance of 11 males and 11 females.

I do like the minifigure sets ever since I received the 6314 'City People' set in 1992! http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6314-1

This was a great way of adding 'civilian' figures to my then very small town, which must have been one of the safest places to live due to the high number of police and firemen! I do like the Minifig Collectible series but don't feel as though Lego will start releasing 'everyday' people.

I also get fed up seeing the same figures used again and again in each City set and have always hoped Lego would release a minifig pack containing about 20 different mixed civilian figures exclusive to that set each year. I'm sure these would sell extremely well to both AFOLS and kids wanting a quick population boost to their town. I would certainly buy these, unlike the new City pack, which I feel is not worth the money due to few exclusive parts, no variation in heads, and a ridiculous price tag!

If a new pack could not be released each year, I wouldn't mind seeing various packs released based on themes such as the following...

Summer City (Paradisa/Holiday style, with accessories like a camera, baseball caps, ice lollies, luggage, diving flippers)

Winter City (figs with non-yellow hands to represent gloves, warm-clothing torsos, hoods, skis, a broom to sweep snow, ice skates etc)

Medical (to populate hospital sets, patients with ill-looking faces, visitors with flowers, doctors, nurses, surgeons, a grey WHEELCHAIR!)

School (some teachers but largely children so lots of stubby legs and uniformed torsos like the generic Hogwarts ones, satchels, a blackboard)

Office (lots of business attire, telephones, computer screens, briefcases, water cooler)

Farm Pack (not purely minifigs but with many animals to add to a farm - my niece would love this! pigs, goats, chickens, SHEEP!, cows...)

Very good idea, particularly the medical set - I don't remember seeing actual patients since the old 80s City sets, and a wheelchair would be a long overdue addition.

I do like the Minifig Collectible series but don't feel as though Lego will start releasing 'everyday' people.

I slightly disagree, thankfully we got a few "everyday people" as part of the collectors minifigures, nothing as comprehensive as the suggestion made here, but:

- Series 1: nurse, diver, cheerleader, skateboarder (and I guess clown, magician and mexican wrestler)

- Series 2: cop, surfer, lifeguard, popstar, disco dude (and I guess karate master, weight lifter, ring master, mime and skier)

- Series 3: tennis player, rapper, fisherman, baseball player, race car driver (and I guess gorilla suit guy, sumo wrestler, snowboarder)

- Series 4: artist, punk rocker, skater, surfer girl, hockey player, soccer player, navy guy (and I guess hazmat suit guy and ice skater)

That's almost 22 that can be use in almost any town and about a dozen more that can be useful if your town has a circus, dojo or ski resort nearby...

Granted the disadvantage is that a number of those civilians are actually sports player (so they often need a team, an opposite team and a playing field...) but still it's better than yet another construction worker :P

And since we already know there will be a series 5, hopefully we'll get a few more civilians in it!

On another topic I agree that an animal specific set would be pretty awesome.

I thought somebody would be quick to point out that there were a few 'civilians' in the Minifig Series sets. However, not that many of these are actually 'every day' folk you'd see walking around town and plus you only get one figure at a time, which becomes very expensive, especially as you can't guarantee which one you will get (even using the old barcode trick I still have bought a few I don't want). I'm not knocking some of the decent figures we have got from the series, as the nurse, skateboarder and tennis player are great but I just wish you could buy a bulk pack of unique figs at a reasonable price, which can be mixed and matched into a normal city environment without them having to represent a specific role.

I'd love a minifigure set that would include pairs of figs (male and female) from different eras of history in an authentic style. The Fairytale And Historic Minifigures collection was a big disappointment in this area, since it only featured figs rehashed from existing parts without much thought put to them.

The figs in my dream collection would be from:

- Prehistoric Era (incl. furs and bones)

- Ancient Egypt (incl. loincloths and jewelry)

- Ancient Greece/Rome (incl. togas and tunics)

- Viking Age (incl. barbarian outfits)

- Dark Ages (incl. poor, ragged clothes)

- Renaissance (incl. pink, frilled garments)

- Feudal Japan (incl. a kimono and hakama pants)

- Wild West (incl. a cowboy hat and a bonnet)

- Industrial Age (incl. a top hat and a parasol)

- 1960's (incl. hippie outfits)

- Modern Age (incl. casual clothing)

- Future (incl. futuristic clothes)

It's considered a bad thing on EB to bump threads older than a year (+/-) unless you really have something valid (I.E. really important and pertinent to the conversation) to say. Threads this old are usually not bumped for any reason. Just so you know, @Renny The Spaceman.

Aren't threads where you are supposed to list stuff different from threads that focus on discussion?

I don't think so. The thread had been dead for over a decade @SpacePolice89 when @Renny The Spaceman brought it back. Maybe @Jim can enlighten us if there is a difference in the rules on threads? (I don't think there is, but...)
