Here we go :)

I like the knees. Are they wheels inside out?

Great look :classic:

What are the functions of this crane?

Yes, the knees are the tires.

It has got a working winch, turning body and moving neck by means of 1 Linear Actuator and a moving head. The max load is 240 grams, useful load is around 100. It is not any heavy duty crane. It is more a fun project and there was not enough place to gear especially the winch enough down. All the functions are controlled by two M motors with transmissions, so each motor operates two functions. At maximum it is 50cm tall with a head up and 52 cm long with a neck down and head forward.

Great work!

Nice out of the box thinking.

Wouldn't it be great if such an organic crane was doing its job on an actual worksite?

It certainly would light up the workers spirit!

I already expected at least someone would come up with the bird idea. :sweet: I think you did great with that MOC :)

I started building something (a little bit like 8460, but studless) but I can't be really concerned to actually finish it (also, because I can't get the driving ring switch to work properly...

By the way I love that little yellow crane a few more posts up

Grohl posted 14 pictures of his Sandhill Crane on his Brickshelf folder http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=441551 . He wrote there that it is "My model for LEGO Technic Challenge. A 50cm tall and 52cm long bird has got working winch, rotating body, moving head and neck. Max. load 240 grams. 2 M motors with trasmissions for controlling the model. Comments or questions grohld@centrum.cz ." Here's the crane bowing to receive his award:
