Gifts with Purchase now giving Insiders points?

Not sure if this is the right place for this – but I couldn’t find any Topic specifically for Insiders/VIP program news and discussion, so I thought I’d from it here. 
 

I got a large set yesterday, specifically planning to take advantage of the double points promo and because I wanted the new DaVinci gwp. I checked my points history yesterday and noticed that there was a second SKU number with 325 points in addition to the one from the set – which seemed odd since GWPs do show up in the purchase history but always with a value of 0 points before. 
 

Then I opened up the DaVinci set this morning and found the instruction manual had a QR code on the cover that I was able to scan and register the set for the same 30 points as a regular set. There was a generic filler name and pic instead of the normal ones specifics to a set, but it still worked. 
 

I’ve never been able to do this before – the last proper gwp set I got was the Year of the Horse in January, and that didn’t count for points or include a registration code. Is this a brand new thing starting this month? Has anyone heard anything official about a change in gwp policy, or this this a random accident for this set?

Yes, they’ve recently started to make GWP sets eligible for registration! I was pleasantly surprised to see that. The first set I noticed was the Botanicals picture frame.

Not only that, but BrickHeadz and s@h / store exclusives now have the QR codes too  The only sets you still can’t register are polybags / paperbags and CMFs.

I noticed this, too. It's somewhat random, though. Some GWPs have a code, other's don't. Perhaps they're still working on something behind the scenes and there is some sort of logic behind it that isn't obvious.

I suspect that’s it. Perhaps LEGO is considering making all GWPs buyable and are slowly implementing the change. You would still get a GWP with purchases above a threshold but you’d also have the option of buying it if you didn’t (or buying additional ones if you did). I have no inside information; that’s purely conjecture.

The whole "Register your sets" thing is only a very cheap way for LEGO to gather data about their consumers.

Including GWP in the program may simply be a way for them to keep an eye on what's going on with these?

If you tie this to the recent development announcing that professional BL sellers are no longer eligible for VIP benefits (see here), I can't help but make a connection.

I don't know if there is a limit to the number of identical sets you can register through the program, but I'm thinking of some crafty BL sellers who use the online PaB to buy parts intended for resale, while doing so accumulate GWP that they can in turn part out to resell the parts... and now they can also gather extra VIP points in the process? Personally, I don't see anything wrong with the setup, but I doubt TLG would see this in a positive light.
