I've finally encapsulated / finished the mountain-less tunnel my dad first made back around 2000. I played with the tunnel a LOT as a kid. It did many tours of duty under his Christmas tree, interacting with the Santa Fe Super Chief and when not doing that, it was with my train MOC's in my room's floor layout at his house. During this period, he always stated he wanted a mountain around the tunnel, but could never figure out a design. Fast forward to 2021 when he finished his newer twin-bore tunnels. During this time, he gave me his now-surplus original tunnel, which I then expanded to be two studs wider to fit more of my custom trains through it.

The left / right and front / back sides are identical to their direct-opposite counterpart.

The mountain-less tunnel as it was. It was 98% old light gray, as I had to use from new gray for my upgrade as I expanded it by two studs in width from the original 2000-era MOC.

EDIT 4/1/25: mountain finished today, with new photos and text posted!

Thoughts?

nice that you continue with it after all this time, only thing that Stands out to me is that the very top of the Mountain is too flat for my taste.

Maybe create the illusion that the mountain was unavoidable, with a flat wall on one side (as if this build were sliced from the rest of the mountain) and  a river on the other side.

I agree. This looks like a big rock they could have gone to the side of. Maybe have it appear to be a ridgeline abutting a river. That would give a good reason for them to cut through. The art deco feel to the tunnel portal is quite nice.

I built this mountain the way I did as I was trying to avoid what my dad did with his newer tunnel (the mountain slice) so as to not appear to be copying him. I'm also trying to give the impression the mountain is a lot bigger than it is while simultaneously attempting to keep costs down. Also, the flat top is because I was originally going to put a cabin up there. It was a lot flatter in V1 of the mountain, but the building wouldn't fit so I did my best to hide the flatness. (I was kinda also going for and upscaled look of the Duplo tunnel I had as a kid with this MOC.) I hope this answers your questions @XG BC @zephyr1934 @Feuer Zug.

Oh, no problem, there's no "right way" to build with Lego. It stops being play and starts being work when you stop building for yourself and you start building for others.

ah yeah, makes sense, as @zephyr1934 said no problem, lego is up to you, its kind of an art tool, build however you like it!

  • Murdoch17 changed the title to LEGO train tunnel with mountain - a MOC started over twenty-five years ago! - real world MOC - finished 4/1/25
