Wurger49 Posted August 4, 2024 Posted August 4, 2024 (edited) The 2024 Durmstrang Ship is about as close to a carrack as Lego has done, while the 2020 Pirates of Barracuda Bay and 3-in-1 pirate ship are based on a Galleon. The hull is completely brick-built, curved wedges create the tumblehome, where the hull grows narrower above the waterline than its beam. I was amazed on how LEGO created the angles on the forecastle, using hinge plates and the aftercastle, using angled technic beams. The fabric sails with double headed eagle and striped streamers are unique to this set and will be great for any tall ships. I decided to buy a second set to build a proper carrack, lengthen the hull and enlarge the superstructures. I decided to call her the Mary Rose, in honour of arguably the most famous Carrack in history it was raised in 1982 in one of the most complex and expensive maritime salvage projects in history. My carrack has high forecastle and aftercastle with a low waist of open decking in the middle. This makes boarding more difficult and reduces the quantity (and so weight) of heavy structural timbers that carry the soldiers. I used Madame Maxime’s body and head, with Karkaroff’s long hair, to build the figurehead of the ship. The bow remained the same with layers of plates and tiles representing overlapping planks of wood, dark tan pieces acting as bracing on the reddish brown hull, and the rudder sits beneath the transom stern. A spritsail was added to the bowsprit, another square sail was added to the foremast, and finally a bigger sail swapped out the smaller one on the main mast. The medium nougat cables form stays beside the masts. The forecastle used the same structure as the aftercastle, decorated with golden lanterns. Two beds and a blue table can be seen if you removed the deck. The aftercastle is ornated with different shields with a dark red framed structure. These dark red and medium azure highlights look fantastic, in combination with pearl gold posts. A large dining table serving drums sticks with wine serving is placed on the deck beneath the aftercastle. I pushed out the window pieces to line up with the dark red frames to build a large summercastle and poop deck. The dark red frames are built to the edge to close the gap from the angled structure. The lateen rigged mizzenmast stands on the poop deck, with golden lanterns on the four corners. The light blue carriage was untouched from the modifications, allowed me to have two horse carriages. I am really happy how “Mary Rose” turned out as a colourful display tall ship. Murdoch17 Posted August 4, 2024 Posted August 4, 2024 This is amazing! But it's also kinda funny, because I posted your model as a 'look-what-I-found-on-Rebrickable' in this thread here. I didn't realize you were on EB, so I apologize for preempting you posting about your own model! Keep up the good work! Quote
