At 1:04 he switches it into a higher gear ratio and it cracks/slips until he reinforces it with his hands, which the structure should be doing anyway.

This is what happens when I attach a motor or push it along a surface long enough (like 3 feet) to cause the cracking. Most people just stop at moving it a foot or so and don’t realize all the friction that builds up if you push it further, which is why I theorize there isn’t a lot of talk about this.
