Marooned Marin Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 ORIGINS For this ENTRY I collaborated with Mighty Oscar, age 12. Not to be outdone by Lorenzo (age 10) and his Sin Island, and inspite of my suggestion to keep with the land-based builds, Oscar (the stubborn) embarked on a perilous journey across treacherous shipbuilding waters... and lo and behold, he was not capsized or lost at sea. He drew much of the inspiration from my Triton, easily noticeable in the bow design, while the stern and the rest of the ship, including the choice of all colours, is all him. He laughed at the idea of adding more ‘happy LEGO colours’ with a sardonic laugh. None of that for him. I provided guidance and help in time of need, mainly fixing holes and gaps in the curves, and especially with renders and obvious CAD sails, but all the heavy lifting of building was done by him. Far from being seaworthy by my own ship standard, and yet still farther of being MOC-winning design, with the contest deadline closing in, I think he managed to do outstanding job in the last five weeks. In short I’m proud of him, and if he keeps at it, in a year or two he will be a force to be reckon with. Quote

Tayaya Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 Lovely ship! Personally I really like the dark vibes of the whole ship, matching with the red and black sails. The golden details on the back look great, and neat use of the double sided axe. And I can't not mention the anchor! Excellent job getting the right shape with the horns. Altogether impressive build Oscar, well done! Quote
Mazin Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 No presentation of the crew this time? :) Or are these the same faces as in Your Sin Island? :) Interesting design, ship itself looks quite nice, i'm not sure if it's not too brown, but You've explained it already, and besides, we dicussed this matter previously in Your Sin Island entry, so i won't be picky about that ;) But, just for the sake of the review, i have to state that, well, color choices were noted ;) Besides, sails probably take a lot of attention from the bow, nice. I wonder if it wouldn't look even better if You'd put golden pirate crests on the both front and back sail? Or would that be too much? I like those shapes of those boards by the gun ports. And with stern, i might be controversial but it could use even more decorations actually, i refer to that space above captain's windows. It's all brown now, and a bit more gold or red color in there could break that monotony. I also wonder if hulls could get some custom paint job? A stripe of red or black, or both, would be an interresting visual upgrade. Lastly, I like Your approach to creating those huge masts, but i think it would be even nicer if You could somehow incorporate some protruding elements into it, to help those sailors climb into the crow's nest and to hoist pirate flags. And i don't mean it as being logical technicality, but it would provide ways to attach figures to more places. I just always loved the fact that i could position my characters almost everywhere on masts of my classic ships. And i miss it here. Same with yards. They a lot lot more different than Yours and the best thing was that i could stick my figures all over them, and constantly had them fight in those sections of the ship, or i would just left them while letting the vessel sail while they would just sing their sweet pirate song into the sky or would simply observe the horizon ;) Quote
Rogue Redcoat Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 The first thing that strikes me is the stern and the gold choices of the hooded figure and the axe, it might be just me but it looks like an early 1700s pirate ship raiding the seas and capturing a galleon or two. The colors and the way the ship is built is fine, I would only add a bit more dark red to match the sails. The only thing that strikes me badly is there are no pictures of the crew, perhaps there is a flamboyant captain or a grizzled old sea dog? Other than this is there any interiors or dare I ask for a comic or a back story (fingers crossed :) Anyway, Happy building to you and your collaborators :) Quote
MstrOfPppts Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 As I've said I am no ship expert, so I usually look at ships only aesthetically. I never was a fan of this slope technique for the ship hulls. Although probably more realistically representing the angle used in ship building, I think it produces many gaps or sharp edges that are hard to cover with LEGO pieces. Also trying to achieve the bowed shape of the body directly on the hull pieces, by offsetting the slopes, made quite a mess in my eyes. The color scheme is a bit dull though quite fitting for a pirate ship. Maybe I miss some more carving details around the cabin windows. But I do like the figurehead design, love the sails design, the red and black makes it even more menacing than the red and white. Also love the colorful minifig bandanas. Are the minifigures also interesting? Would like to se the full lineup! Quote
hatchpattern Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 It is especially challenging to get the curves of a ship correct out of Lego. I think we will all struggle with this forever. That means, our imagination much take over to fill in those gaps. Every time I look at a ship MOC I study the stern castle to see how the artist addressed the arcs. I love every single one, to be honest, because I can tell so much thought had gone into it. Yours is no exception, I love how the back rests on the hull element. It feels well balanced. Personally, I am not a huge fan of the technic masts. I much prefer the classic pirates elements. I like your resolution of the masts, they have a lot of texture and a feeling of strength. Keep up the great work! Quote
iragm Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 The sail colors are fantastic! Good tumblehome design. Some ratlines are needed on the forward mast, its awkward having them only on the main. 3 sails in height is ambitious for a ship this size, but it works IMHO. There's a decided lack of color on the boat itself; some white like the Barracuda Bay has might be good, or a bit of red. Maybe the cannon covers could be red to match the sails? Oh and speaking of colors (heh), a larger flag on the back of the boat would be good. I like the cabin design and the way it slopes inwards; I think it's fine as-is. The anchor is too large, although I admire the brick-built attempt. On 8/24/2023 at 5:32 PM, Marooned Marin said: I think he managed to do outstanding job in the last five weeks. If the designer's age is factored in, this is nothing short of amazing. I will admit that I prefer the Sin Island design, but a ship is a much harder thing to build, and this is an admirable attempt. I hope he keeps up the design work, because, yes, in a year or two he could be one of best designers around. Quote
Marooned Marin Posted August 27, 2023 Author Posted August 27, 2023 @Tayaya Thank you for your kind words, and I will inform young Oscar about your praise. @Mazin Thank you for extensive feedback. I cannot give you all the answers about the colours and decorations, as I'm not original designer, Oscar (the 12-year old) is. He made the ship pretty much alone. I provided help with some technical issues, and renders. That being said, we rushed the whole design as the deadline was approaching. Now, with that behind us, he promised me he will continue to work on it, to make it really seaworthy, and I will delegate all of your suggestions to him and when needed provide assistance. @Rogue Redcoat Well, there are no images of interior because... little Oscar didn't manage to build any till the contest deadline. As for the comic, sadly there's not going to be any about this design. But, I'm have something BIG (full featured Pirate comic book 120pages story) on my to-do list for the 2024 @MstrOfPppts Everything you have written is spot on, and I will inform the young designer about the areas for improvement. Thank yee! @hatchpattern I thank you kindly for your words of praise. @iragm Thank you for keeping your original line of thought and opinions, before realising the age of the designer. I can give little Oscar more ideas for improvement. And yes, you I agree, Sin Island is also for me better because I was involved there much more than in this ship. I'm feeling little tired of ships, so landbased build was quite a refreshment for me. I'm planning to pester both of them (kids) to continue building and improving their designer skills. In any case, I'm glad this contest happened because otherwise I would never discovered potential they have. Quote

A new mighty ship is coming along, and I'm glad this contest is over so I can focus my attention there. At the moment I'm in the process of double-checking the whole design and soon I plan to order the bricks and plates. Then comes the tedious task of making the 400+ pages instructions... I think the first test-build will be in the late October, and if everything goes to plan the the ship will be released in early December. So be sure to check these Pirate waters weekly or at least monthly. Quote
Mazin Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 (edited) Wow, that's a lot of work! Well, i'm sorta building my own ships too at the time, tho not with bricks, but by words, as i'm trying to finish my history-adventure series, so that maybe they will be ready for Christmas, maybe earilier, hoped for the summer slot and summer is already over, so now i'm realy curious which of us will be done first by that December ;) And 400+ pages sound just like the size of my book ;) Edited August 27, 2023 by Mazin Quote

How and where can I find out more about it? The Pearl, 3049 pieces was just around 400pages. New ship is currently pushing over 3300 pieces, so It will be a small miracle if I get instructions in less than 400 pages. Now on another note, have yee considered embarking on the Classic-Pirates blogging adventure? With your writing talent you would be right at home there. Quote

Thanx, i'll check it out later :) Not to make much of an offtopic in this thread and keep it short, it will be a series about polish corsairs, mainly fighting Swedes in the 17 century in the Baltic, but they will also visit other areas and one of the instalment revolves around Your country actually. You can check some of my pages if You want, i haven't realy updated them in a while, as i try to focus on writing, well, sometimes drawing too, and all those other activities take away a lot of time and attention ;) https://www.facebook.com/KorsarzRzeczpospolitej/ https://korsarzrzeczpospolitej.blogspot.com/ Quote

MontyMatte Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 Great and huge ship! The compliment to what was created at such a young age is also huge. The techniques in particular appear very professional. Keep it up! Quote
