Today I present you the Dual-crane Pipe Transporter, a vehicle that came directly out of my mind. I mean, in my remain, I never seen a +real+ vehicle like this one.

This kind of vehicle could actually been used on construction site of oilfield for the transport, the tracks allow a low ground pressure and good traction so it is suitable for every environment.

The full review with all images are avialble at superk-technic.com/pipetransporter.

I based the design of the Transporter on two vehicles from my Idea collection.
The lateral reach stacker Meclift ML5016SR (on my to-do list for 2018) and a classical side loading container trainer similar to what has been released in the Mack Anthem 42078 set.

The Dual Crane Pipe Transporter is a tracked vehicle equipped with a large flatbed to transport pipe of long loads, a dual articulated crane, 4 outriggers, a sliding cabin for improved view and a counterweight.

The Power functions elements used in this MOC:

  • 2 PF-L for propulsion (1 per track)

  • 1 PF-M for the crane main structure w/ linear actuator

  • 1 PF-M for crane articulation w/ mini linear actuator

  • 1 PF-M for outriggers w/ 1 mini-LA per outrigger

  • 1 PF-M for winches

  • 1 battery box used as counterweight

Plus 2 SBricks Bluetooth controllers.

Thank you for reading.

A very interesting and unusual model, lots of functions.
The out rigger system might just be what I am looking for my current MOC.

That's a really cool implementation of an unusual model. It looks so incredibly clean!

Even on the underbelly shot the motors are nearly invisible. *huh*

I really like that you used the standard Battery box instead of the smaller LiPo box.

I think the cranes might benefit from separate winches and a rope guide near the pivot points to minimize the length variation during the tilt of the large crane arms.

Neat! Building a non-extant yet easily plausible model is an excellent way to confuse a lot of people...
This MOC looks excellent, it's got a neat colour scheme, the shapes are well defined, and I love how the boom fits into the transporting bed smoothly. Good job all round.

It reminds me somewhat of a type of railway crane, using two booms in tandem to lift and replace whole panels of track at a time on a parallel line. I'm surprised such a machine for exact and easy pipe-laying doesn't exist in real life.

I like how clean and compact everything looks. If yo uiwould have said it existed I would believe it. Really the only things giving it away are the tracks. I would expect this to be a wheeled on-road vehicle. But it looks splendid. Nice small scale, lots of functions, very clean design. Good colors. I like the moving cabin. Could have been a set. The inspiration from 42078 trailer is kinda clear though :)

The only large con is the fact it can only transport one pipe at a time. As soon as the main boom is lifted, the pipe rolls off. That would be a weak spot for this vehicle. You would have to change the whole design of the cranes to change that. But let's say this is for really heavy pipes that are usually transported one-by-one anyway :) :)

Some cradles to drop pipes into & secure them would work.

I tried the LiPo battery but it wasn't really easy to install.
Each crane "arm" has itsown winch, on the frst try I used only one long cable with a winch in the center of the vehicle, but there was too much pulley to install so I decided to simplfy the assembly.

I didn't really asked myself during the building process if it would be better to use track or wheel. In fact I was supposed to build a pipe layer, so on tracks.
And I agree with the limitation to one pipe. So I took a note one my 2018 to-do list and I probably will come with an improved version (I just can't decied if I build a truck, a crane, or this first )

I formulated that badly. What i meant was a separate winch motor for each arm, as they get unsymmetrical depending on how the rope gets coiled up on the winches.

Very cool model. Hard to believe it isn't real (yet). Well done, lots of great functions here. The linked tandem arms are genius.

In real life I think it would be easier for a manufacturer to use two third party telescopic/foldable crane like a Palfinger or Fassi one, piloted simultaneously.

Edit : Found this as example , the Lorini Muletrax 2500
