I considered a mechanism that would activate the switch rail when a monorail passes over it, similar to the switch rail on the original LEGO monorail.

Please check it out! :)

I Finially got new curved gear rack in hand.

And did some experiment for use monorail.

This three combination is match rack gear with perfect backlash.

Left - Single 20t gear between two train wheel

Middle - Single 20t gear, two half bush, single round tile with hole between two reversed train wheel

Right - Single 16t gear between two 50951 tire with roller guard

This two is work but both has bad backlash. Espically left one is very poor.

Left - Single 12t gear between two 80441 wheelchair wheel

Right - Single 8t gear between two 1L beam

For maximum possible guide roller distance, If you use full thickness gear this is maximum.(By the way, 28t with that setup is work perfectly too.)

Without gear, this is maximum possible distance.

This is a cross-posting from General Parts Discussion, where the pictures are better. It's interesting but we don't need to see it twice. :-)

As someone who rarely ventures outside of Train Tech I'm glad that something was posted here. But maybe a "FYI, see this thread" with a single tantalizing photo. Especially since that would keep the discussion in a single location. Ah, after searching I see it was a single post n a large thread

These new gear racks are probably worth their own thread

This layout is very compact, measuring just 1,200mm x 900mm.
Therefore, all the monorails have been modified to two-car trains driven by a single motor.
Although the layout is compact, it includes switch rails, automatic operation, and high-speed monorails, making it a thoroughly engaging exhibit.
Please check it out!

This is our Blacktron monorail layout, shown at STEAM 2025 and NSC 2026 in the UK.  Now 3x5 plates, 2'6" x 4'2".

I used 6x 10355 Blacktron Renegade sets for the livery, with Technic panels for the larger structures.

The sharp curves work well with no stress, thanks to some 1x2 plates with rounded ends.  Radii 24M and 34M.
The train motor works well as the motive power.  The PF LiPo battery lasts up to 1.5 hours in either a single motor or double motor train.  3 batteries per train is sustainable for the show.

I now have hills working too, similar to the original geometry of 6990.

@Brickthus

Hey Mark, nice layout and trains. Is there anywhere some more pictures/details of how your trains work, where the motor sits? It looks very similar to my approach built like 4-5 years ago [1], with motors in cars suspended on joint boogies between two coaches. Can't see it from the video above. Curious how your design works.

[1] Edit: this was my snake train post running on 12V rails:
