TheJiral Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 (edited) UPDATE: Pictures of the final MOC/MOD diorama: (Image quality could still be better but it should do) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi all, I am totally new to this forum, and to adult lego as a whole. So the story is that I really wanted to have that Doctor Who set with such a cool Tardis and the Daleks and and and. I tought about some diorama without the interior, where one can present the figures + Tardis and to put it to good use, I came up with having a diorama that is at the same time a book stopper for my shelf. It does not exist yet, outside of LDD but I am just waiting for the bricks to get started. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts, just don't be too harsh with the work of a beginner... And here with mock ups for stuff from the Doctor Who Set and from the other (book) side Edited April 25, 2016 by TheJiral Quote
LegoPercyJ Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Has promise. I like the rock on the sides. I'd love to see pics when you are done ordering. Quote
TheJiral Posted April 1, 2016 Author Posted April 1, 2016 (edited) Thanks for the positive response. Can't wait till I can start putting it together to see what it will be like and also if it holds. I must not look too much into the castle theme section of this forum though. My design looks more humble with every look I take at the glorious builds there. ;) PS: For this first timer, I sticked to "Pick a brick" elements and colours only. The Librarian Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 I love the idea of building a rock-face around the end of a bookshelf! It should be a very nice looking tree too, when it's 'in the flesh'. Do you have any particular tile in mind for the Weeping Angel's plinth? My one worry looking at what you've got so far would be how firmly attached the TARDIS would be, especially given how hefty it is in its unmodified set-fresh form. Is it going to be clipped in place on the grass? Quote
Agent Kallus Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 For more specialized bricks look at bricklink or lego bricks and pieces. Quote
TheJiral Posted April 1, 2016 Author Posted April 1, 2016 ^^ Ah I didn't know about the bricks and pieces, i did have a look at bricklink though but decided I'd buy from Lego for a start. Is there a limit regarding parts one can order from Bricks&Pieces? They do have a much larger variety of bricks there indeed. @The Librarian Which particular tile for the plinth are you referring to? For the front I thought I'd use that letter flat tile, upside down. I think that works fine as some sort of inscription. But I could also give it a try with the grey flat tile from the Tardis interior with the linear motive and the white and red dots. Regarding attaching the Tardis, well, that won't be too firmly. I have a 2x2 tile with one knob below that green flat plate. With that the Tardis should be set in place and I can be easily oriented it in an off angle. Other than that I thought I trust in good old gravity. I'll see if this was a mistake. Quote
The Librarian Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Yes, sorry I phrased the question rather the wrong way around! I did mean to ask whether the letter tile was the one you were planning on using or whether it was just a placeholder. Going through the bricklink catalog, I'm coming up surprisingly short on possible alternatives. I'd have assumed there would be at least one decorated 1x2 tile with some kind of inscription on it but the nearest I'm getting is a runic pattern from one of the old Harry Potter sets. I guess any actual statue inscriptions are on larger pieces! Quote
TheJiral Posted April 1, 2016 Author Posted April 1, 2016 I'd have that tile from the set, but I am not sure it works out: Quote
Forresto Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 The old harry potter graveyard scene with Voldemort has a gravestone inscription sticker. Maybe you could find someone online who still has a sticker sheet from those days. I don't know if they would still stick but you never know. Quote
blackknightrises Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 What about this sticker from the LOTR: Mines of Moria set? Seems like it might be able to work for an inscription. Quote
TheJiral Posted April 7, 2016 Author Posted April 7, 2016 (edited) Those are interesting proposals but they do seem all too big for the socket. This tile would look nice in terms of colour and script but its too obviously a car name I guess:http://www.bricklink.../3069bpb468.jpg The best bet may very well be that rune tile mentioned before:http://alpha.brickli...bpb079#T=P&C=85 Edited April 7, 2016 by TheJiral Quote
TheJiral Posted April 10, 2016 Author Posted April 10, 2016 (edited) I am not sure if this fits in here, but it probably doesn't deserve a thread on its own and its in the context of the diorama.I was wondering if there is some room for improvement of the official Dalek design and had a look at the net for inspiration. Obviously what I came up with is heavily influenced by both, the official design as well as solutions others have come up with before. But based on what I've seen and my own ideas, I built this small assortment. Those Daleks are in minifig scale (at least as much as the official ones from the Doctor Who Ideas set) as you can see by that justifiedly terrified minifig. PS: Those designs aren't final but I am seriously contemplating building at least one of them.. Edited April 11, 2016 by TheJiral Quote
TheJiral Posted April 24, 2016 Author Posted April 24, 2016 (edited) Sorry for the modest picture quality. I'll try to get a better one, but so far this has to suffice. I finalized my diorama with some modifications. Obviously it depicts an alternate dimension where Daleks run away from the Doctor ... PS: Oh and I built it mirrored. I can only recommend that, even though or because it is twisting your brain a bit. Edited April 24, 2016 by TheJiral Quote
Agent Kallus Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 Looks so much better in real bricks and it was already great. Quote
The Librarian Posted April 24, 2016 Posted April 24, 2016 Oh, now that looks lovely! It really works in situ. I like your shaping on the foliage on the front corner and the way you've mingled the colours both there and on the tree. Love the Daleks running from the 12th Doctor too! Quote
TheJiral Posted April 25, 2016 Author Posted April 25, 2016 (edited) Pictures of the final MOC/MOD diorama: (Image quality could still be better but it should do) A little break during a lovely walk over the hills? No. Surprise!!! Ex-Ter-Mi-.... Stepping out of the Tardis, enjoying the fresh air ... everything calm isn't it? ... Is it? Edited April 25, 2016 by TheJiral Quote
Tariq j Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Excellent work! The rocky outcrop looks great and really adds some depth to the MOC. The way this model has been adapted to become a book stopper os very impressive. Keep up the good work Quote
slopemodified Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 Very good beginner's work! I agree with Tariq j - love how the cheese slopes look on the rock face Quote
Jacob_9821 Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 Being someone who's tried to build terrain for his mocs/displays, yours looks well done! I like how you made the TARDIS able to stick on with a few studs so it isn't prove to moving. Quote
TheJiral Posted May 9, 2016 Author Posted May 9, 2016 Thanks for the feedback. The Tardis is actually fixed by only one stud but that seems to be enough to keep it in place. The outcrop and using those cheese slopes was actually the initial idea around which I built the rest. Quote
