The best way to look at it is that it is a separate reality. G2 is a whole new thing separate from G1. G1 still exists and was a thing, just not a thing that we care about anymore. So no, it's not 'canon' in the context of G2's storyline.

Yeah it's canon. There is just no official connection to G2.

Yet. There is not enough evidence to claim either way.

The main point is that you don't have to understand G1 to get into G2.

So, they aren't in the same universe, but they are both still canon, like Star Trek.

Not a perfect comparison. In Star Trek the two universes are separate, but still connected by way of the Spock from the old universe traveling to the new universe. We have yet to see any indication of such a connection between G1 and G2 Bionicle.

A better comparison might be the difference between G1 and G2 Bionicle to the difference between Batman: The Movie from 1966, Batman from 1989, and The Dark Knight from 2008. They are all official Batman movies featuring Batman, The Joker, Police Commissioner Gordon, and Gotham City, but they are not the same version of Batman, the same version of The Joker, the same version of Police Commissioner Gordon, or the same version of Gotham City.

Everything that happened in the G1 story still happened in that story, but so far none of it affects the G2 story. Likewise, nothing that happens in the G2 story affects anything that happened in the G1 story. They are separate, and the G2 story just happens to be the one that is currently ongoing.

Canon is a rather dubious, mercurial concept, but assuming that you mean "is Gen1 part of the world of Gen2," the answer would seem to be "No."

To elaborate, Makuta, while still the villain, is a Mask-Maker, with a brother named Ekimu. The original Toa exist, but need golden masks to use any of their powers, and Lewa controls plants, as well as air. There is a Mask of Time, somehow used to summon the Toa (Lyichir's hypothesis that it was used to speed up the requisite planetary conjunction is the best I've seen,) about which we know tantalizingly little. Speaking of which, Time is a major theme.

The only links to Gen1, aside from the reused characters, are a bunch of Vahi-shapes hidden in the Spring animations and the Island of Mata Nui popping up on a preliminary poster (on the Mask of Control's forhead.)

There's actually plenty of evidence to claim one way... there's also enough evidence to fuel conspiracy theories, but there's a reason those things are called that. We've been told there's no connection.

Also the Nuva symbols in the upcoming sets =P.

I've seen people backing from the possibility that they aren't connected, yet returning back to it all the time and vice versa, even people that have connections to the team.

They have never came into open and stated that "These worlds are not connected in any way whatsoever" The fact they are toying with the possibility alone is enough to convince me that they are onto something.
