Cousarmy0001 Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 So I set out to make a smaller warship, similar in shape and size to the merchant ship that came with the Imperial Trading Post. The bow pieces in LDD are larger than the ones from the ship, though, so I wound up with a creation larger than anticipated. It doesn't quite seem right, though, and I'm curious as to whether anybody could help me figure out what's wrong? Quote
Hobbythom Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Hi Cousarmy, I am far from an expert in ships but since you asked what seems wrong with it I take it you feel as if something is off and are looking for a more general opinion than a shipbuilders extact view. There are to things that pop out: 1: the ship seems somewhat short 2: the complete hull from front to cabin has the same height. This makes it look somewhat like a speedboat with an oddly placed cabin. Hope this helps! Quote
Captain Braunsfeld Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Hi Cousarmy, several things I think about: a) Masts could be higher. Placement of masts could be changed depending on what kind of ship you're aiming for. You might want to take a look at other examples in our index. b) Bow should be raised by one brick as Hobbythom suggested. c) Maybe you turn this into a three-mast ship. Good luck! Quote
Captain Dee Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 I think the overall look could be improved considerably by removing the sterncastle and building up the entire hull by at least one brick. As it is, the bulky stern somewhat overwhelms the rest of the hull. I really question whether you need it on a vessel this size. If the sterncastle must stay intact, try curving the decks from bow to stern for a smoother transition to lessen the visual impact. I also think the masts could be taller but the yardarms seem too long for the narrow width of the hull. As much as I like square-rigged vessels, I think something this small would benefit from fore-and-aft rigging, like a schooner, or a combination of the two, like a schooner bark or a topsail schooner. A brigantine wouldn't be bad either. But that's all up to you! Hope I've been helpful and good luck building. Quote
Crimson Pirate Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 HI Here are my suggestions: 1. horizontal parts of masts are too long 2. The ship is small, so normal shooting cannons would be too big, try to use alternate method and build cannons yourself 3. Steering wheel is also too big, make some place for it and hide this wheel a bit in the floor, like in 6271 imperial ship overall it's good, keep the right proportions of all of ship's parts and you will create really good alternate ship project ;) Quote
Capn Frank Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 I revised the title of this topic, so people knew what kind of MOC you need input for. Quote
Cousarmy0001 Posted July 14, 2015 Author Posted July 14, 2015 It's not a merchant ship... I do intend for brick build cannons. The carriages in the picture are 2x3s, though that's probably a little difficult to see in the pictures I provided. If I'd used full size guns, they'd be touching each other :-) I had tried raising the bow by another section, but it made it look like the old police boat hull. I'm playing with it, though, to see if I can get it to look higher via other means, though I've already had to give up the bow chasers in order to do it. I had been going for a small brig, but upon viewing the index, I'll probably be switching the rigging for a topsail cutter. That'll free up some deck space, as well. Quote
Capn Frank Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 It's not a merchant ship... My apologies Cousarmy. Quote
PeroTheLegoman Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 I'd do two things. Break the even angle of the bow by making it curve and make the stern curve in a way or at an bigger angle I'd remove the top black angled bow and replace it with one which goes straight up Quote
Captain Dee Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 You could just build up the forecastle behind the prow rather than using another of those bow elements to give the vessel that distinct 1600s look, albeit in a small scale. If it weren't for the pronounced stern I wouldn't recommend building it up anyway. These small vessels can be challenging so I'm curious to see what you come up with. Changing the rigging will transform it too. Quote
Jreacher Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 I would also add more angles, The ship looks very flat. Also raise the mast higher, but its looking good so far. Quote
