I, for one, would love to see LEGO do something like the 2009 theme again. I thought it was really good, most certainly one of the most impressive "1 year only" themes I've ever seen. And I liked all of the sets, which also had a fair share of variety. While I'd naturally like LEGO to re-introduce Pirates as a lasting theme, I wouldn't mind terribly if they did a 1-year theme with the same quality as the 2009 one.

I quite hope this new Pirate theme bears some similarities to Lego's 2009 theme. I myself only had a few of those newer sets, but many of my classic 90's Pirates sets are long gone!

It may not be a theme. It may just be one nice D2C ship. I think they are just squeezing something out to keep interest alive because the PotC movie and license got delayed.

But, it has a new logo. If it was an exclusive, it would just be labeled under the Creator Expert logo.

I really hope Lego releases a ghost pirate ship with an undead crew. Closest thing to one was the Queen Anne's Revenge, but I prefer their own IP over licensed ones.

5, nay 6, years have passed since the last pirate theme was released so it's quite likely that the old concepts will be reprised as there will be a new group of children who are potential customers. Whilst this infuriates AFOLs who have been following TLG for many, many years, and get annoyed by the repitition it makes sense from a business perspective to keep re-inventing the sets that sell well with children every few years.

Conversely they realise that there is some money to be made in models of ships (as there is in models of trains) but there's not enough money to be made to justify a full theme so they release one every few years (as they do with trains). Good news in that it would mean ships every few years, bad news in that it's only every few years.

Exactly. I could see it being a 1-2 wave theme to fill the gap untill PoTC 5.

I think that licensed products will always take precedence over non-licensed ones, so we're unlikely to get a 'Pirates' theme for more than a couple of years. They'll probably repeat the same sets from 2009 in 2015, with another IF-type set in 2016 and then POTC sets in 2017. As someone said before, Lego works on the memory spans of kids rather than adults, and they have five years worth of kids who were too young for the 2009 pirates.

Hoping for a whole theme next year, as I dont think TLG would release one in 2016. That would be only a year away from PotC 5, and might take the wind out of the sales (Posted Image) of the PotC sets - if customers get their pirate fix from an in-house pirate theme in 2016, there might be less apetite for PotC sets. TLG wouldnt want that, so next year is our best hope for a whole theme.

We have no confirmation that the LEGO Group still has Pirates of the Caribbean franchise license, nor can we rely on the official release date for the fifth film because this is the second "official" release date Disney has announced.

You mean like this:

I think we can rely on TLG producing a pirate ship with almost annual frequency. Since the release of the Imperial Flagship and the end of the last Pirates theme we've had the Queen Anne's Revenge, The Black Pearl, the LOTR pirate ship and even a Duplo Pirate ship released. I think it's safe to say these sell pretty reliably.

Don't forget the Spongebob pirate ship!

It does seem like they've caught on that sailing ships sell well and are finding ways to slip them into random Lego themes where they can, now. That's encouraging, I suppose. I just want to see them as part of a proper pirate series. I guess we should keep an eye on "breaking news" to see if there are any sets from other themes that might potentially be a pseudo-pirate-ship...

I found these on the work computer today, all prices are in NZ dollars and I think probably a couple of the smaller 'Soldier's Arsenal' type sets are missing, as well as any exclusive sets. Release date April next year, although our computers are not always reliable with release dates.

17.99 NZD - Shipwreck Defense
39.99 NZD - Soldiers' Outpost
39.99 NZD - Treasure Island
59.99 NZD - Soldiers' Fort
179.99 NZD - The Brick Bounty

Don't have time to convert to approximate EUR/USD/GBP prices right now. My initial speculation is that the Soldiers' Outpost and Fort will be connectible in some way.

Soldier's Fort? As in, some sort of new Imperial-ish fort? I'm interested in that one especially.

Those sets can't be too substantial as the New Zealand gets screwed on Lego prices and their currency is consistently a fair bit lower than the US/Aussie dollar. Not that I'm complaining as it should be a good way to pick up some of the new Pirate figures cheap.

Just off of comparing with US prices and NZD prices, here are what the US prices seem to be:
$12 USD - Shipwreck Defense
$20 USD - Soldiers' Outpost
$20 USD - Treasure Island
$40 USD - Soldiers' Fort
$90 USD - The Brick Bounty

Glad to know there's a whole lineup of Pirates sets for 2015. :) Hopefully they'll do well and we won't have to wait several years in between Pirates themes.

Taking just2good's estimate, and subtracting a cent to the usual pricing styles:

$11.99 USD - Shipwreck Defense
$19.99 USD - Soldiers' Outpost
$19.99 USD - Treasure Island
$39.99 USD - Soldiers' Fort
$89.99 USD - The Brick Bounty

These sound excellent, whichever way you come at it. The prices look great, too!

The sets sound good, but yet again, the ship will most likely be disappointing. It's $90, so it'll probably be a cheap ship like the brickbeard's bounty. Hopefully they will make another big ship, like the imperial flagship, but for the pirates. But the sets sound great, and I hope they make new styled soliders.

You're forgetting that in Australia and New Zealand we pay an extra tax for no other reason than that we live where we do, so the US prices are likely susbtantially cheaper than what a straight currency conversion will throw up. For example the Lone Ranger Stage Coach was US $29.99 but AUD $69.99. Given that the currencies are fairly close to equal value even with the cost of shipping stuff to our part of the world included you can see how we get slugged with extra simply because Lego figures the market can bear it.
