I sometimes ponder if a more 'aggressive' stance wouldn't be good. But on the whole, I think Lego's design in great for most circumstances. I also wish that Lego would produce horses in a few more colours (tan, light grey and dark grey would all be pretty good, I think)... and it's a pity there are so few in brown compared to black and white.

Ahoy, Sorry for the late follow up (been busy elsewhere), but I noticed the heated discussion on terminology in this thread and thought I

Looking very nice! The stern gallery looks a bit square for my taste... Maybe some tall slopes on the sides, rather than vertical bricks?

I think it would be fair to say this ship has no (or at least very few) superfluous studs. Those on the rail and the figurehead certainly add to the detail and the character of the MOC.

Wow. A thread about one of my vessels, before my time here! No? How so? I'm pretty sure it does. Well, I did originally intend rigging it as a brig, but in the in end felt that the size justified the inclusion of a mizzen, so I guess you're partly right, except for the bit about me being confused, of course. ;)

This ship really impresses me... the sterncastle in particular is nicely integrated - it avoids the 'box nailed on the back' look. The only change I'd make to the colour scheme would be replacing the light grey with black or brown (or possibly even red).

Hi Mr Tiber, It seems that capstans appear on lower deck on some ships too. That's what I saw when I make my search for this model. Indeed. And just some extra trivia about captstans - sometimes they went through a deck... You could have crews working the same capstan on two decks at once... the trick, of course, is to get them all pushing the same way. ;-)

If that's your shopping list, I'd seriously consider adding some ratlines, a wheel, an anchor and several cannon as well as ab additional mast piece or two (for a bowsprit). It depends a lot on exactly what you're intending to build, but that would be a good start. Also consider stuff like lattice windows, 2x2 flags (gunport lids), sails, flags and so on.

Very nice looking, indeed! Are the topmasts stepped abaft mainmasts correct? It doesn't look right to me... (I know sometimes (rarely) topgallant masts were stepped abaft the topmasts, but topmasts abaft the mainmasts seems particularly odd.)

Actually, Kurt Baty didn't paint the hulls in the examples: The colour changes he made were done with electrical tape. Black (particularly) and white electrical tape give a reasonable colour (and gloss) match, and are also easily removed.

"Borrow" away - it is a pirates forum after all. The black vest/blue sleeves torso is from the 1979 vintage Snack Bar or Bus Station (was in both of those, at least). The green rag hat isn't one of those expensive BL ones - it was surgically removed from a 4+ pirates fig.

I did - the brig Seatop uses brick built anchors... actually anchors borrowed from my frigate Mis

Too white? Too different from Lego sails? A few of my older vessels use stiffened calico sails - do you think that looks better? (They certainly can have a nicer shape, but they do tend to droop a bit after a while). (Excuse the old camera) (That's the original Mis

Hmmm.... 1. Most ships don't carry soldiers. or 2. The soldiers are wearing their winter uniforms. or 3. It's actually a Brunswicker ship, flying a misleading flag. (I use pirate captain torsos for Brunswicker uniforms). But 1. The commander at least should be wearing some sort of French uniform. 2. No one's ever mentioned winter uniforms before. and 3. I'm not sure that, historically, Brunswick had much of a navy. Anyway, Mister Phes, I shall make every effort to have my crew uniforms match the flags in future... although that may be an issue because my next vessel out of the slipway is a supply tender, which almost certainly wouldn't have normally carried soldiers, and almost certainly wouldn't be commanded by a commissioned officer!

Ahoy all, My daughter gave me a 6210 Jabba's Sail Barge for Fathers' Day. It seemed like a good set from the photos I'd seen, but I didn't realise how good it was until I opened the box and started building. Not only is there an excellent part selection (3x2 gunport lids, anyone, bow sections in brown, tall slopes in dark grey, 8x8 grates in tan etc etc), but there's a variety of excellent construction techniques - sides with tumblehome, the 'rounded' stern (which incorporates tumblehome too), and of course the clever mounting of the 3x2 hatch covers on flex tube. The figures aren't that useful, although I do like to use the han solo torsos for sailors (white, opened neck shirt), and the Princess Leia fig has its own uses. While I'm looking forward to utilising many of the parts in a pirates vessel soon, I am so impressed with the design of the sail barge that I think I'll keep it around intact for just a bit longer. Incidentally, one of the alternate models given for the set is a pirate ship, complete with sails, cannon and even a figurehead (the whole Princess Leia fig!).

whatsa deep link...I specialize in ships not internet. Awesome work, Aaron. I look forward to seeing her finished! Deeplinks are links to images on Brickshelf which are available before the folder is moderated. You can get a deeplink by clicking on the image until you get a URL which ends in ".jpg" In this case, the directory is: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=200620 For example, a non deeplink picture is: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=2005314 And the deeplink is (ie reached by clicking on the image above): http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/morsea10...-6/p1030488.jpg

Historically, it was quite common to fly a 'misleading' flag. ;) I haven't built a British/redcoat/Imperial Guard vessel for quite a while... perhaps it's time I did?

Very well done! There's some excellent details, the vessel fits in well, and the presentation, as others have said, is great. Oh yes - I love the name too.
