just a curiousity question: does anyone know if this set will havethe normal shooting cannons in the USA, or will they still be the non-firing type?
-
yeah all up i paid AU$240 for it so it is a bit of kick in the face. i still cant beleive it costs around US$70 for either a box or instructions (cant even find the sails ) from bricklink stores, it makes trying to replace the damaged parts rediculously expensive - more than the ship's worth IMO i imagine they would reimberse the whole amount if they found that they were at fault....... but at the cost of a perfectly good ship its a crap decision, its times like these where i do approve of law suits (i.e. whenever i've been screwed by some plonker ) ah well, atleast the other 2 SES's got here okay, i have to say one of the ships i won off ebay was so intensely wrapped its worth an honorable mention: two layers of cardboard boxing all covered in brown packing tape (making it waterproof!!!!!!) and then everything was enclosed in resealable plastic bags, admitantly it didnt come in an original box which makes it much easier to pack but still - what a champion! in future i will insist (for big sets at least) on this standard of packaging it saves on much stress and drama

Okay ive pretty much grinded to a holt on this one, with one question remaining so i'll fill you all in. Australia post will run an investigation into when and where my parcel was damaged if i give them everything - packaging and all contents this of course includes the ship (note: no plastic parts were not damaged only the sails, box and instructions were mouldy/battered) once they have run this investigation they make a decision, whereby if they do pay out for the damages ..... the remains (the ship) will be incinerated..... WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????? this is the kind of crap that is clearly in place to stop people complaining about their absolute incompetence and so they can get away with trampling other peoples belongings without any resistance or comeuppance so here is the question: do i just take it on the chin? or do i attempt to get compensation from these manure outlets and condemn an SES to the furnace?

Buying Pirate LEGO - where to buy, advice, tips and questions
Aquila D'oro replied to Mr. Smee's topic in LEGO Pirates
I tend to find bricklink to be a bit over priced for complete sets (new or used), i've won several larger sets on ebay for alot cheaper than what bricklink stores are asking - having said that there were quite a few 6277 over xmas but next to none now... and MISB as preiviously stated is as rare as hens teeth, if you can get it.. do so.. cos the 10210 will be available for most of the year i would suspect.- 502 replies

At present im frantically trying to find a shop in brisbane that stocks it... seems once again Australia is behind the 8 ball. although it does give me a chance to save up some cash. anyone in brissy got this beast?? if so please let me know when and where you found it - Cheers!!

perhaps you should buy another ship i know i will need more than 2 to slake my lust for a well endowed imperial fleet
-
I generally dont like sets with parts that are large and pretty much preassembled as it limits creativity and MOCing, I first noticed this with newer lego city cars whereby the whole chassis was one solid piece.... LAME! Oddly enough my dad said the exact same thing about the lego hulls used for the ships from 1989 onwards Theres a lot to be said about the old 2x4 bricks

CRAP!!! $AUD45 in postage each? they wont do combined shipping?

damn i was so keen to buy a couple of pirate TTT sets, may have to go for the calender instead. Thanks to everyone for all the info! interesting to note that the pirate TTT sets dropped to half price on the lego shop site over xmas (might be a result of the quality issue...) in any case TTT sets and are now flooding eBay (Beware!!) also note people are taking the sets apart and selling the minifigs out of set, maybe lego sellers/traders have realized the problem too and are trying to assimilate them as best they can.....

Master eBay Auctions thread - post noteworthy auctions here
Aquila D'oro replied to interstellar's topic in LEGO Pirates
postage is pretty steep (to Australia), i'll have to pass - some are cheaper to buy here off the shelf when you add it all up good luck to everyone else! *sigh* eBay is way too addictive ....... most of my xmas money went over seas lol -
6243 Brickbeard's Bounty color choice
Aquila D'oro replied to Francis Dampierre's topic in Pirate MOCs
at the stern/back of the ship they use black skeleton legs to hold a black lance/rod, you could try that if you didnt want the rails to look too chunky, oddly enough they do use those maroon 1x1 cylinders beneith skeleton legs as well.... -
Why were cannons in the USA non-shooting?
Aquila D'oro replied to Jack Bricker's topic in LEGO Pirates
Wouldnt be supprised if it was caused by a law suit, lets face it in western society there are too many lawyers and too many idiots who dont take responsibilty for their actions thus when they hurt themselves they sue which in turn takes the fun out of it for the rest of the population. an example here in Australia would have been when some guy got drunk and went swimming in the surf late at night/early morning BY HIMSELF and got toppled over by a large wave and had his neck/back broken when he got slammed into a sand bar... he sued the life guards (who weren't even there as they dont patrol at night) ..... what a twat I'd say i do go out of my way to get the older style firing cannons but this is largely just match the theme which was predetirmened when i got the sets back in 1989. but it is quite easy to get just about any cannon you want, if you really want firing cannons i recomend eBay UK - i managed to get over 20 firing cannons just this Xmas and they were quite cheap even with postage costs. as for firing them i guess its only when i build new sets - just to test that they do work the one thing id love to see is a technic electric motor MOC built into a ship so it can fire several cannons automatically. something along the lines of: a bit of string with one end attached to the cannon and the other end to a rotating rod (which winds up the string thus pulling back the cannons spring) - "bags not" collecting all the cannon balls though!! -
MORE CANNONS!!! 4 is not enough you can get 8 into the hull of a BSB sized ship (4 down each side) much like the SES for that matter and they only have 3 mid sections each, so with 4 mid sections im sure you can squeeze another cannon in I have a BBB as well and i did think that the front was a little bit bare/bland, it definately needs an anchor/winch. plus there is plenty of space for a lock up/brig at the front - this would also give the pirates something to stand on when they're using the riffles at the bow. Lovely work by the way - looks fantastic

its more of a question of "how many to buy?" this sort of set is pretty much an instant collectable - much like the 8421 gigantic technic crane, which you could get for around $250 (when new)... but now can set you back as much as 400GBP... no wait i'll correct that i just saw one on ebay for 550GBP the plus side is you wont have to keep converting/building SES/BSB sized soldier ships when you get one the real beauty of the 10210 is the colour scheme, so easy to convert to blue coats as well

thing is a lot of vintage lego sets go up for auction around xmas (especially in the UK), i've found that if you ignore the first few auctions (where all the high bidders get involved) the ones after tend to be quite cheap i managed to get several SES's and BSB's for half the price of what you can get in Australia - especially when you factor in the strong AU$/weaker GBP as for my damaged SES sails im tried/trying various methods: Soaking in strong clothing detergent (nothing so far although the bits not mould affected are very white) rubbing with tea tree oil (given up on this one all together.... smells a bit as well) next step will be to lightly bleach using a cotton bud/que-tip directly on the affected areas so as not to fade any of the black patterns away. And if its still doomed after that... acrylic paint still quite annoyed about the box and instructions, probably the biggest loss in terms of re-sell value as there is no way to fix them other than to buy it all again

Now taking YOUR ideas for NEW PARTS - LAST DAYS!
Aquila D'oro replied to Bonaparte's topic in LEGO Pirates
I'd like to see a part that can be used to add width to ship hulls (would attach to the top of the mid sections) but not just inverted slopes, they need to make a seamless transition from the bow and stern sections i.e. a combination of pieces: 3676 Inverted Double Convex http://media.peeron.com/ldraw/images/7/3676.png and 2 x 3 wing (L+R) 43723 http://media.peeron.com/ldraw/images/7/43723.png That way longer ships can be built without them looking dis-proportionate. I find about 6 mid sections + bow/stern is as far as I can go with the standard 16 width before it starts to look a bit weird..... -
the original POTC movie was an entertaining film for me but it has long since past (im actually suprised lego didnt license it to begin with), unfortunately the last film (at worlds end) was terrible dont get me wrong I love the characters and many of the ideas but it needed serious storyline/script editing with reagards to the whole calypso chick. Especially the part where she turns into crabs and a giant whirlpool = NONSENSE!!! However I do agree Capt Jack Sparrow and all the other crew and ships would make an excelent collection in lego form you know what would be cool though... Technic Transformers... *DROOOL*

My opinion is that 1989 sets had much more elaborate castle/island designs for soldiers and pirates a like. however im beggining to feel that the Brick beards bounty is an improvement on the carribean clipper and the upcoming 10210 flagship an improvement on the BSB/SES. Only I prefer the colour coding/styling of the older ships, the gold colour pieces of the new ones look a bit tacky to me otherwise they're pretty neat designs, hence im stealing a few ideas for my own pirate flagship The Aquila D'oro - will post pics soon... when its completed... with 2 decks .... and 40+ cannons Yippee-Kayay!! :jollyroger:

I recently bought a SES (#6286) of eBay from germany (box + instructions, 100% complete near mint conditioned.. set me back a fair bit) only to have Australia post go on strike - delay delivery of my set for over ten days whereby it got drenched and then heated by the Australian summer resulting in soggy/damaged box and instructions and to top it off................. sails with mould on them!!!!!! Question 1) It was posted uninsured via DHL (insurance was another 40 euro ontop of 39 thats why I didn't insure it.... regretfully), can I hold Australia post responsible for the damages to the set? (any advice/experience here would be great) Question 2) Is there any way of getting mould out of these sails??? I've tried a light warm hand wash using "Preen" (which is fabric stain remover) and a standard laundry detergent ..... no luck so far

I store complete sets by theme in 48 Litre containers, except for pirates.. as only the small ships (carribean clipper size or smaller) will fit in them ..... and there are a lot of ships (cant wait till 2010 for the 10210 ) still running into problems with preventing white peices from yellowing, any suggestions? as this is getting quite annoying P.S. they are stored away from sun light... still the problem continues
