I'd love to find those pieces on the wall, but I'm scared to think how much I'd spend. Those hinge plates are really awesome, I'd pick up a bunch of those. I never seem to have any on hand. Pink bricks and purple plates, those are colors you just can't pass up. Even the tan log bricks, I noticed recently that tan is almost completely absent from my spare bricks, so I'd have to buy a bunch of those. Spare doors and windows are always nice to have, and those styles are especially rare in my collection... I can see why you bought what you did. I don't know if I would have bought as many of each as you did, but I could easily fill 3-4 cups with those wonderful pieces. I suspect the bricklink prices on these will be dropping soon with all of this pick-a-brick inventory appearing, but I'd rather find it on the wall than order from bricklink any day.

Lego CUUSOO Legend of Zelda Achieved at 6:05 AM today!
meyerc13 replied to CM4Sci's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Congrats to the creator for getting the vote, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who knows nothing about the Legend of Zelda outside of the name. Never played it, know nothing about it. Contrast that with The Winchester - even if you didn't know anything about the movie, it had zombies (and who doesn't love them?) and a nice modular building (always a great source for parts if nothing else. So fairly broad appeal within LEGO circles. Who will this appeal to outside of fans of the property? Much like the three models currently produced or approved, I don't have any interest in this. Now Gauntlet, on the other hand, or Bard's Tale I could get behind, but this one's a pass for me unless the final model (assuming licensing rights could be secured) has some interesting parts at a good price. -
This is nothing new, LEGO did the same thing with the most recent 7208 Fire Station. I think they do this so that the kids don't get confused and try to use the non-slotted brick where the slotted one should be used. It's easy enough to swap out if you have a decent LEGO collection, and it gives you extra slotted bricks which are far more rare than their plain counterparts. Once again, nothing new. Look at the same fire station from 2 years ago and you'll find the exact same design. In fact these sets have so much in common I wonder if it was the same designer. The wall made of windows is another similarity between the sets. I think this is a design feature. By using panels, they add more interior space to the 4 wide ambulance. If they hadn't done this, it would be an extremely tight fit getting a stretcher into the ambulance. Sometimes I can fault LEGO for using panels, like on the City House when they put one behind the stove, so when you dropped the sausage piece it would get stuck back there and you'd have to take the set apart to get to it... but in this case I think that was a good choice. I you want bricks instead of panels, you should be buying Creator instead of City.

I'm really looking forward to this set, and will buy two, but only because it is so disappointing in size and interior. With two hopefully I can make it into something worthy of the name 'hospital.' It's too bad LEGO didn't put much effort into the interior. I was hoping to get some tricks on how to make a decent operating room or emergency room. Oh well, hopefully this will inspire some great MOC designs for medical equipment that we can use to improve our hospitals (LT - I'm looking at you!). Thanks for the great review! Well done.

Interesting. Some of the Collectible minifig parts have made their way into City sets, like the syringe, but not the Series 1 Nurse's clipboard or the X-ray tile from the Series 6 surgeon? Glad I picked up three surgeons, wish I had found more than 1 nurse. It's disappointing that LEGO chose to make the clipboards with stickers rather than use the tile they've already made.

The 3 drawer cabinets at Target do have the dividers and plates on the front, these were not the ones with the three project cases, hence my surprise at finding them. The price was the same $39.99 that the LEGO store is selling these at. Someone had removed the nylon bands around one of the cabinets, and I was able to take a look at the trays. They seem awfully small, but for someone without many parts or with a very granular system, perhaps they would be fine. For me, the small sections in the tray along with the fact that the drawers don't have lids turns me off a bit. I can just see a kid/dog/cat knocking this over and parts going everywhere. However, they do look really cool, and are tempting... but rationally I just don't think they're great for my needs. As for price, on occasion Target will run something like, "all storage on sale." If they do, that might be a chance to save a few dollars on these.
-
For those in the US looking for these who don't live near a LEGO store, I spotted these at Target tonight. They were in the storage section, not the LEGO section. They also had the LEGO Storage baskets with wheels, the project cases, and the minifig storage cases.

The size difference between those two ambulances is incredible. I think the Great Vehicles ambulance is too large, it's the size of the garbage truck after all, and the one with the new hospital is too small. If they had made the Great Vehicles more like a US ambulance, with something like a Freightliner Medium Duty Truck cab and a slightly larger box in the back, it would have made sense for it to be larger than a Sprinter style ambulance, but only about 25% larger. As it is, I wouldn't want to use both in my LEGO City, so I think I'll have to MOC my own ambulances.
-
I have a feeling that this is designed as a replacement for the Bank. Same number of minifigs, chopper instead of armored card, ambulance instead of police car, buildings about the same size. Since that was a Target exclusive here in the US, I have the feeling that this might be as well, and they probably needed it to hit the same price point. If that's the case, I think we need to tank LEGO and Target because this will be the third great set that they've given us that doesn't fit into the normal City release schedule. I also wonder what they might offer us in 2013... what else have we been whining that we need in our LEGO cities? I guess that's probably a topic for the 2013 City sets thread (when one gets started).
-
I think it's only four minifigs - doctor, patient, chopper pilot, paramedic. If you look at the picture showing what's in each bag, you can see the figures standing next to the ambulance and helicopter, and there are only four. I like the doctor, and the helicopter is cool, but the ambulance is lacking and the hospital needs a lot of work. I might pick up two of these if the price is right to build a bigger hospital for our LEGO City.

I love it! Now you've gone and made me interested in that set, one I thought I was going to pass on. I also love the story about your daughter and her frequent tire changes... at least she is learning the concept. My grandfather drove for over 50 years and never knew how to change a tire, so that's great she's learning already!

An internet tale Winchester/Shaun of the Dead project on CUUSOO
meyerc13 replied to Yatkuu's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Oh really? Look at Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, a guy has his heart ripped out. Or Batman The Dark Knight, the joker slams a pencil through a man's eye. Yet LEGO makes sets for both of those themes. I've got kids who are six and four, and it frustrates my wife and me that Hollywood makes movies at PG-13 that toy makers like Hasbro and LEGO then make toys for. The kids who are at the age where they play with toys aren't old enough to see the movies the toys are based on (like the upcoming Marvel Avengers, btw). Cuusoo only allows adults to vote, yet when adults vote through a set they say, "We can't make this... think of the children!" Well if that's the argument they want to play then I challenge them to pull Batman and the Avengers toys off the market because I'm sick of explaining to my kid why he can't go see the movie for the new toys he just bought at the LEGO store. Let's face it, this is a bad decision. It's not like kids would even know that this was based on a movie if they saw the set, because it's not like the movie has advertisements currently in heavy rotation like the new Avengers movie. I honestly think a big part of their decision is due to the nutcases who protested Friends... because of a few people like that complaining loudly, LEGO doesn't want to risk someone getting on their soapbox about this set. I can tell you that this has turned me off completely to the whole Cuusoo concept, and I'm not going to waste my time on the site any longer since the sets that are decent and aimed at kids don't get the votes, and the sets that are aimed at franchises that get the votes won't get made unless they are so generic that they don't offend anyone (like Minecraft). I predict a lot of lousy sets coming out of Cuusoo, while the best sets get overlooked or vetoed. Waste of my time. LEGO -
I think the only reason that Fire Brigade is still around is because of the problem they had with one lot (39R1) that was missing a bag. They pulled those off of the shelf and ran another production run. I suspect if that hadn't happened, that these may have disappeared by now.

That depends on whether you like Wolverine or Iron Man more. My son picked the Cosmic Cube escape, and we built it this morning. Not a bad set, but probably less playability than the Chopper showdown since that comes with both a motorcycle and the helicopter. But the Iron Man figure is very cool with his flip-up visor, and I love the parts that came in that set. Really it's a coin flip as to which one to get, both are great and I love that LEGO gave us two sets at the same price point.

It isn't the Monster Fighters theme that is filling the sci fi slot... monsters are horror not sci fi. It's the Dino theme. Dinosaurs and Jeeps together... sounds like Jurassic Park which is science fiction.

Best/most needed bricks for castle building?
meyerc13 replied to daisy's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Don't give up on finding LEGO castle sets quite yet. I've still been seeing quite a few of them at Barnes and Noble stores. If you've joined their member program, they've been emailing 20% off coupons every few weeks. I've probably picked up four more of the Outpost Attack sets there, which are great for castle buildings. Some people have reported finding some of them at TJ Maxx and Marshall's stores, but I haven't personally seen any there. Another option for parts is the Bricks and More Knight and Castle Building Set. This is a great set to pick up a few of at Toys R Us when they are running one of their BOGO sales. I'm not sure what your budget is, but there's also the Kingdom's Joust set which is great as a set and also as a parts pack. -
Must be an electric jack hammer.

Does every lego piece have a lego stamp on it?
meyerc13 replied to blakeatron's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I don't think so. I've found some unusual bricks that I'm sure are LEGO but on which I can't find a LEGO stamp. One that comes to mind was a 1x1x5 brick with a hollow stud... if it had LEGO stamped on it somewhere I couldn't find it. Yet I had identical parts in a LEGO set that I opened myself so I'm sure these were the same. For normal bricks, LEGO should be stamped on the stud. For strange pieces, usually LEGO is on it, but as I mention above I'm not sure that it always is. -
An internet tale Winchester/Shaun of the Dead project on CUUSOO
meyerc13 replied to Yatkuu's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Wow, this is awesome news. Let's hope there are some Shaun fans on the jury that will be reviewing this at LEGO who will argue your cause. If this gets the greenlight, this is likely to be the second $100+ set I've purchased (unless it comes out after the new LotR sets, in which case it would be the third), and the first 'modular' style (assuming that aspect is maintained). I also think this will bring in a lot of new customers who haven't purchased LEGO before. I don't see why LEGO wouldn't produce this, because everything you've presented has been tasteful and I wouldn't be afraid to show my kids... now the movie on the other hand will wait another 10 years before they can see it, but any sane parent knows that. Will some people protest? Probably... look at LEGO Friends - but I don't think LEGO should make their design decisions on the small segment of foolish people who complain about everything anyway. -
More info here: http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=167229 This really hits close to home. She's the same age as my wife, has two kids just like we do, suffers from depression (as does my wife)... I really hope this has a positive ending. Clearly she's cared for by many people. I know with depression everyone assumes the worst case, but during one bad period my wife flew half way across the country on a plane ticket bought by a friend - unbeknownst to most of her family and friends, leaving me with our 1 year old child. Thankfully she realized that running away wasn't the solution to her problems and she came back and got help and deeply regrets that incident. But don't assume the worst because a severely depressed mind can make irrational decisions, even moreso if medication changes are involved. Heather - if you are out there reading this, please let someone know you are okay even if you don't want to be found.

Wow! This is incredible and really inspiring. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but is this still only 64 studs deep? Or is it more than that? My kids got the marina, harbor, and boats for Christmas, and I've been trying to figure out how to incorporate them into the limited space that we have. Interestingly enough, since I picked up a second Marina on sale, and since we have an extra police station (came in a Craiglist lot) and an extra fire station like the one your coast guard station is based off of, I think I have most of the pieces to build something like this myself. I'd change a few things, like making the Coast Guard building more open somehow for play, incorporating the Coast Guard Tower that we have, raising the pedestrian bridge higher... As I said, truly inspiring. I'm going to have to think on how to make buildings like this but also keep them playable. Maybe hinged walls or something.

There definitely seem to be problems with their site. I've been registered forever, but I could never get back in. Finally I tried a different computer, and it worked just fine. Strangely the computer that worked for me was running Firefox. So whatever the problems are they must be tied to certain configurations or versions of browsers. Great to see this finally getting some support. I'm supporting a few projects, I just hope LEGO doesn't release them all at once! -
Nice rebranding of the Toys R Us/LEGO truck. I see it suffers from the same flaw that those do - the rear doors aren't available in the correct height. With red it's even worse since all of the fire truck MOCers snap up the red doors. Also, I think the sticker needs to be white, every Coke truck I've seen has white text. Other than those two minor issues, good job. It definitely looks good in red. I better not let my son see this because red is his favorite color.

This is the kind of new topic that I love to find! Great work all around, but my favorites are the Milk Truck (which has a fantastic level of detail), the Bumble Bee, and Blue Fury. On that last one, I just can't believe you crammed that much detail into such a small size. I keep looking at it thinking it must be bigger than it is, but then I count the studs and it's not!

meyerc13 replied to Yatkuu's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I think the real trick for many of them is getting registered on Cuusoo. I don't know why, but I seem to have constant problems... first registering, then logging in... I don't have these problems anywhere else, but sometimes I get so frustrated I give up. Don't worry though, I was able to get through and vote for your creation. :-) I'm curious why more people who are fans of modulars haven't voted. They buy every modular set LEGO produces, but you're telling me they wouldn't buy this one? I don't believe that. I've heard some people say things like "LEGO wouldn't do it because they don't have a license" or "LEGO wouldn't do it because it has undead" but LEGO has already said that neither of those is necessarily a deal breaker. They pursued a license for minecraft, and said they could do a zombie theme with some tweaking, so if those are holding you back, get out and vote! The only thing we aren't likely to see is something like Transformers, since that is a Hasbro property they aren't likely to license to LEGO since they have their own line. But outside of competing toy companies, I think any license is fair game until LEGO says it isn't.
