  1. On the one hand many problems come in using Lego hulls, first of all the problem of the color of the hull, it breaks the lines of colors. Another big problem is the width (even in extending it a bit on the side), it doesn't allow to build a high scale ship (4 central parts make a good width/length ratio, 5 could still be OK, but I don't think more is advisable). But on the other hand it is hard to build one's own hull, there are many ways to build one and I invite you to look at some creations on brickshelf to see by yourself. Not to mention such hulls need a lot of bricks. I'm currently thinking of building a hull and I have to say it is a headache for me, especially to make a round hull, by round I mean when viewed from above but also with curved sides. I'm currently trying to see if it is possible to make a hull with hinges and plates. In the end I think it depends on what you want. If you want to build a small to medium sized ship and not to bother too much about how to build a hull I'd say go for the Lego hulls. It could also be more "slick" this way. But if you want to build a big ship, more accurate and all by yourself then build your own hull.
  2. I do not know all the hull colors, can you tell me if it is possible to make a totally black hull? I ask for both sizes. I wish I could have a large black hull.
  3. This unnamed frigate is a beautiful ship and his other ships are amazing as well. I had already seen all these ships before and I personally think this man is currently the best ship builder I know, his ships are beautiful and very accurate in many aspects.
  4. wow you have done a fantastic work here

    Two Ships

oh frankly I don't know much about naval uniforms, all I can say is that such uniforms are only for officers and marines, but I guess these stickers are closer to the uniforms of this era than the Lego ones.
  6. I don't really know what to do apart from using a yellow minifig, I'd like to see if there are some other ways to make one.

    You're right, I'm French.

    Two Ships

I have found this site which shows some French uniforms
  9. I have thought of adding a figurehead lately but I don't know how to do it, I don't want a too big one (plus I have a sail just below the bowsprit.)
  10. I'm using Internet Explorer 6 (an early version I think) But I think I have found how to post without this bug. In fact when I click on the link of the forums in my favorite links it doesn't really seem to work, on the contrary when I go to eurobricks.com main page and then go to the forum with the menu it seems to work. It is really weird.
  11. here are some pictures of a prototype of a fort I made some time ago. There's also a little dock I made for my frigate. click here to see I would personally like building a Vauban style fort but it's too hard to make some angles.
  12. Thanks for the nice comments. I named it La Prudence because I think it sounds good to me and it reminds me of the names of the frigates of this era. About the Lafayette class frigate you have posted (these are the new light frigates of the French navy and this model is also an export success with exports to Taiwan, Singapore and Saudi Arabia) I have to say that I planned to build one but I abandoned due to the lack of parts, I don't know if I'll try to build one one day. Phes, can you tell me why I can

    Two Ships

Why is the French ship named "Freedom" and not "Libert
  14. I guess I could add some yellow bricks, as for the smiling guards, to me it embodies perfectly what Lego is about, I personnally don't like those new minifigs with aggressive faces, but that's just my opinion, I guess I'm an old school builder (by the way I don't use and I don't own the new pieces and the new colors from the last 10 years.)
  15. Yes this is removable and it is above the officers cabin
  16. no problem, I'll add this pic next time
  17. no this isn't really a totally finished MOC, and it lacks pieces because this MOC is in my previous home that is my parent's house. I didn't use a lot of small bricks because I haven't a lot of white (erm, faded white :p) pieces and the bulk of my work is made of large 5x5 white walls which came from a big hospital. I may add yellow bricks here and there.
  18. I wanted three masts so that it really look like a frigate, frigates are always three masted. I thought of making it longer but the ratio width/length wouldn't be right and I think it would look too long afterwards. I have checked and the correct ratios of the 18 th century frigates were around 0.28 (and a little less at the end of the century.) I don't understand all the comments about the hull as I have used official Lego hulls since the beginning of this project a few months ago. (You can check my other Brickshelf folders to see.)
  19. Here's a little fort I have built. Unfortunately it is seen here incomplete as I needed some parts for something else, it lacks the cannon on the front, two lanterns and a few other things.
  20. 18b Here are some new pictures of my frigate which I have modified lately. Its name is La Prudence. It is now really a frigate as it is three masted. I have also made some modifications on the upper deck, I have added stairs on each side and I have changed the cannons which have wheels now (but they are fixed to the floor nonetheless.) Im pleased with what I have done but if Id like it to be more historically accurate I should lower the third mast, get rid of its lower sail and add an extension of the bowsprit (I don't know the name in English.) But I like the way it is now, I find it homogeneous. I have recently found a website about a replica of an 18th century frigate, which is by the way the one used for the movie Master and Commander. I was amazed to see that such a ship exist, so if you are interested have a look there : http://www.tallshiprose.org/ Edit by Phred: Changed link to back up pics.
  21. I glued two sheets of paper (only the border before, now everywhere) together and then I cut with paper scissors, that's easily made, I even used a screwdriver to make the holes !
  22. The deck is on 4x4 plates with hinges. There are ten of them. I'm currently working on the ship, it has now three masts, wheeled cannons and I have added some new details on the deck, I'm waiting for some parts I have ordered to finish it and post new pictures.
  23. Sorry, I don't understand what you mean, are you talking about my ship in progress or about the frigate of this thread, because the latter has a all Lego hull.
  24. This is really a beautiful and impressive creation, I love it, this is the best Lego port scene I have ever seen. I like every part of it. Congratulations.
  25. Thanks for the comments, I'm glad to see people like it better now. What do you mean by "a hull piece" Captain Ironhook? To me the hull pieces are the brown bases.
