MOC: Power Functions Commuter Train with automatic sliding doors
Duq replied to Esben Kolind's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Awesome work Esben! The way the doors push out the steps is sheer genius! I'd say both your PF trains make a strong case for Lego to do a PF micro motor -
Didn't stop you from doing it anyway ;-) I've ordered one from Ireland and indeed it has the big ugly 3-pin plug.
-
After seeing some nice narrow gauge trains in Wales I would definitely like to build something. Not sure when I'll find the time though....

I built this little harbour tug a while ago but only got around to taking pictures the other day. My plan is to build a bigger ship at minifig scale in future and this was mainly an exercise in building a hull. As a result there's not much detailling in the superstructure or on deck. For the colours I've used the livery of Dutch company Smit. Their blue/yellow is very recognisable. It's not meant to be a scale model of a particular ship but it's based on Smit harbour tugs like this one:

The wings seem kinda thick but I really like the overall look of the plane.

BRICKWORLD TRAIN TRIATHLON - POWER FUNCTIONS ENGINEERING CHALLENGE
Duq replied to BMW's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Sounds like a really interesting challenge. Too bad I haven't a hope of attending Brickworld... :-( -
It depends what you want to build. For a shunter you don't need speed and you have little room so I'd go for the M-motor and gear it down. Look for HoMa's BR80 to see a great example of a small engine running with just a single M-motor.

Gosh what a negativity. Reminds me of the grey/bley panic. I'm with Holger on this. The Power Function battery box for 6 AA batteries is way too big to put in a train. LEGO realised that (with some AFOL pressure) and has produced an alternative. You now have two interchangable battery boxes. A cheap one for AAA batteries and a more expensive one that's rechargable. It keeps the price down for the initial purchase of the new train sets. That should help sales to children (remember, they're still the core market) and more Lego train sales can only be a good thing for all of us. At a later time you can replace the AAA box with a rechargable one without any modification to the model. Yes, that'll leave you with a spare battery box. That can be used to power the level crossing. Or the lights in a building. Or.... Nope, read again. You need to include the improved motor in the equation. The new motor on AAA will produce the same performance as the old motor on AA batteries.

Now that's what I call a proper review! You've got me convinced, I'll be buying this set. Those yellow inverted windscreens look like very useful parts. Shame about Rex' arms and Hamms missing hat though...
-
The only ones that comes to mind are these two, both from the same builder: More. More. Look through his sets. He's also done a Luas and the Boyne viaduct.
-
Seems like an interesting set alright. With 54 pictures I'm glad I didn't open this thread on my mobile connection...

"Nice review" "Very nice review!" Am I missing something? Where's the review? All I can see is a few pictures of the contents of the box. That's not a review in my books...
-
Well done! Very nice design. A lot more going on inside than I'd imagined. Looking forward to your next MOC.

MOC: Power Functions High Sped Train with automatic doors
Duq replied to Esben Kolind's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Nice work Esben! Those doors are somehow familiar... ;-) What controls them? You say they're automatic, does that mean something triggers them when the train stops at the platform? -
I'm not familiar with the original at all but I really like this model. Lots of nice details. I especially like the new handbrake.
-
Of course there are people who already know but aren't allowed to tell....
-
4 AA batteries is only 6V, that won't work. Expect 6 AAA's...
-
Maybe I'm missing something here.... Why not use the 9V crossing? It'll fit and RC trains will run on it. The only thing is the shiny metal but I'm sure that's easily removed...
-
I'm with peterab here. Very happy to hear that the blind drivers come in the set, that makes it a must-have for me. The problem with the HP train for me is that it doesn't look like a proper train. It looks like one of those trains in theme parks that drive around on tires. I had really hoped that with the availability of the new train wheels Lego would do a proper steam train for the Hogwarts Express.
-
I think you misunderstood something Brickster. 12V didn't offer this, it's DIY. You could apply this to 9V as well.
-
Brilliant and beautiful!

Thanks for the compliment! Did you check out the ILTCO Library? In particular you might find the Close coupling and Advanced train building articles useful.

Read again MadCat. It doesn't have 36 batteries as a counter weight, it needs a counter weight to lift 36 batteries...
-
I'm not very familiar with cabooses as we don't have them here in Ireland but I like the look of this. Clever solution.

I've posted about this before and I've tried to ask this question through the ambassadors as well. It makes no sense whatsoever to sell them together. A pack of plastic track costs the same as a pack of straight 9V track, only now I'm left with a pile of curves I don't need...
