To answer your question, I dug my old one out of the attic, and (age, scratches and replacement rubber band notwithstanding) it's pretty much identical: I had forgotten I had lost the spring. The rubber band might explain why I found thee new one's spring surprisingly loose Thanks, Zorbo! I've been harsher with this set than with any before, but it deserves it if you ask me. As you say, it certainly 'lacks execution'. I do believe you're right . 4645 isn't inventoried on either Bricklink or Peeron yet, which makes it difficult to check things like this.
