  1. Again, people feel differently on this matter. Personally, I feel its in poor taste regardless of whether its a sham or not. Only a few posters have taken issue with the fact she is selling these items. Most have simply expressed their belief that advertising the death of her son with the sale items is incredibly inappropriate. You ask others not to judge her, yet in doing so, you are actually judgeing them. Everybody has a right to an opinion, even if that opinion is what you would consider inappropriate.
  2. I think your missing the point. I don't think anybody would suggest that there is something wrong with selling off a loved one's belongings after he or she passes on. Nobody would disagree with you there. Heck, estate sales happen all the time. It's just that some people (including myself) find the manner in which this seller is going about selling these items to be distasteful. Also, I have a hard time buying into the notion that advertising her son's death on ebay is part of the grieving process - particularly when she seems to be using it as a tagline. Each of her LEGO sales includes the same cut-and-paste line. It just seems to be in poor taste.
  3. The Tain - The Decemberists
  4. Castle. Beyond the Falcon, this year's Star Wars sets just don't excite me that much. After the Y-Wing redesign, I'm kind of let down by this year's ships. Castle on the other hand feels fresh. Its something completely different. Of course, none of this matters. Star Wars will always win any poll its entered in so this is really moot.
  5. I was hoping for something like this *sweet* Seriously, I think this is going to spark some utterly fantastic MOCing! I'm just waiting for some clarity on the rules before I begin. I'm wondering if the MOCs should conform to a set aesthetic. The castle I'm working on (ready for any seige) is by no means set-like in appearance or scale.
  6. One can never see too much House. Hugh Laurie rocks hard in pretty much every roll he plays. Most convincing American accent by a non-American actor EVER. Not to mention, House is the Perry Mason of Medical doctors. He almost never loses a patient. Oh, and that rendered hospital is pretty nice too.
  7. Probably a good idea. I also think that there should be a payment deadline to ensure that all ticket holders are serious about this. If people fail to pay by the deadline, the raffle could be re-opened in order to fill out the ranks.
  8. I don't believe for one moment that this woman has lost her son. It seems inconceivable that somebody would use their deceased son as a means of making a quick buck. To advertise the death of your son in order to bolster sympathy and generate higher bids is flat-out sick. Whether this woman did or did not lose her child is completely irrelevant.
  9. Put me in for 1 ticket. Odds are alot better than winning the lottery.
  10. Hardly. Making a MOC studless doesn't in of itself make the design simple or <insert that tiresome argument>. In fact, most studless MOCs that I've seen tend to be wellbuilt and thought out. If anything, building a studless MOC can prove more challenging than building with studs. To say that building studless amounts to juniorization is simply not correct. Having a preference for one techinique is fine, but to knock a builder for building in a style that you don't like is hardly fair. Megabloks :-X ? Can you be more offensive?!
  11. I very much doubt we will see those trolls in any sets. From the various toy fairs, it doesn't look like those trolls are part of the line. I suspect that they are much like the Viking beards and other elements that simply don't make it into production. Remember, those photos are preliminary. The castle and minifigs have gone through a number of changes since that photo was first leaked. It stands to reason that those guys were simply an idea scrapped during development. Heck, given the fact that LEGO has already produced a troll body for Harry Potter, I can't see them making another one.
  12. Vader or Maul. There are so many cool SW figs though.
  13. Meh. I don't want another line of sub-par sets introduced for the sole purpose of selling off overpriced licenced minifigs. Ultimately, minifigs make up a very small portion of the set. I've enjoyed the Batman and Spiderman licences, but something like the X-Men is just overkill. Heck, why not just buy the licence and sell overpriced minifig packs? Seriously. The X-Men are cool enough, but a generic X-Jet, Sentinal or Danger Room aren't exactly must-haves. Unlike Star Wars, where the vehicles are as important as the characters, with the X-Men or Spiderman, the characters themselves steal the show. It makes the sets themselves littlemore than an undesireable expense in my opinion.
  14. Take a closer look. The Batman minifig can be seen in a few of the photos (including photos with the cockpit closed). He fits quite nicely despite his oversized headgear. Oh, and thanks to you and others for the compliments :-) .
  15. After making something of a dud with my 'Burtonmobile', I've decided to give the Batman thing a second go with the Batmobile from the 1990 Animated Series. The smooth surfaces and simplified design of the Animated model made it ideal for converting into LEGO form. Getting the canopy to slide forward while sitting flush with the hood of the car when closed proved to be a tad frustrating. Still, the final mechanism works wonderfully. Check it out. Criticism is always appreciated :) . deeplinks: Folder when moderated. Later.
  16. NO! Seriously, Spiderman as a character is quite cool, but Spiderman sets are just too limiting. Batman has Spiderman beat in this regard. Unlike Spiderman, a big selling point for Batman are his funky vehicles and the familiar locals. Spiderman is just another minifig to put in a generic NYC backdrop. The Spidey sets were really nothing more than playsets thinly veiled as LEGO.
  17. Year 1 or 2. Best castle parts packs ever. Heck, the majority of my castle doors are now from Potter sets *sweet* . Everything else is just... bley.
  18. Weather is a funny thing. When I complain about snow or the cold, my friends from mid-western Canada laugh. In Ontario, -15 (-30 with wind chill) is considered cold, but out west, alot of people are used to -50 and lower. Still, I love the snow, so I can't complain. The 40 cm we got this Wednesday wasn't too shabby, but I could have used another 40.
  19. I'm indifferent. Most builders who impress me seem to have a good grasp of a variety of building techniques. The choice to go with studs or go studless alone doesn't make a MOC good or bad. Its the end result that has to be measured. Obviously, the ability to go studless presents a number of advantages, however that isn't to say a stud-covered MOC is somehow less impressive. Its all a matter of circumstance.
  20. I'm gonna totally be robbed on Bricklink this year. So many great minifigs! Still, when all is said and done, I'm only really interested in the non-wizard faction. I think that I'll probably pick up as many crossbow catapults as I can, and supplement the men with shields from Bricklink.
  21. I've been working on a new castle for the past 8 months, but a string of setbacks have prevented me from finishing (my goal was to finish it in late 2006). Right now, I'm looking towards this summer as the finnishing date. When you build big, you often run into unforseen problems. I'm also working on a BTAS Batmobile. That one should be finnished shortly.
  22. When tax is factored into Canadian prices (something automatically done outside of North America), pricing is very close to European prices, but still figures to be about 5-10% cheaper. Licenced lines are noticeably more expensive in Europe than in Canada, but most lines figure to be around the same price. That being said, if you ever have the time or money, a holiday in the US isn't a half bad idea.
  23. If you have to win a golden C-3PO just to be eligible to get the real MacCoy then that just sucks. I want an equal shot at that guy. Knowing my luck, I'll never so much as see a golden C-3PO in the first place. Stupid collector promotion!
