EB Community Castle Build: Discussion Thread
metalandi replied to I Scream Clone's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I agree with the stable, 16x16 would be too small. But i think making every module 16x32 is a problem. For example the blacksmith area that would be way too big, in my opinion. It would be no problem to have 16x16 along with some 16x32, one bigger plate could always be on the opposite side of 2 smaller ones, imo. Also we shouldn't move the wall more inwards, that leaves too less space to build inside on the baseplate. Why move it inwards? Everything is happenng inside, so i don't see the point of having 4 studs free on the outside of the wall, since there's basically nothing to be built. -
Sorry that wasn't meant to be harsh, but i think everybody should be able to understand what everybody writes, and since i think the main board language is english we should stay to it.
-
That looks really great so far, but you will have to modify it, for example add the outside castle wall and you also have no 2x2 bricks with hole to attach it to other buldings. But as far as i know you said you already bult that before this project, so i assume you know that there are things to modify.
-
Can you please continue to write in english? Thank you

Thank you, i'm looking forward to see your version!

Thanks! As far as it comes to the holes in the wall, i also was thinking of not using them here, but i think then the outside wall would look too plain, and if there are holes outside and inside not it would make no sense. I'll add some more shields and stuff and make some pictures agan then. Edit: Allright, i made some small changes and i think i can say now, that it is ready for the final entry. Btw. forgive me for using bley along with grey parts, but i had too less of each to build it out of just one of them. I think that problem will be solved when all the modules are attached to each other at the end, which would be one thing we don't even know how to do yet exactly.

I wasn't too happy with the roof, it was kinda too colorful for what i like, so i changed it up to the following. Tell me what you think about it! -

to describe it better, that's one way how a beweathered old cardboard roof could look: Of course it also can be just built with brown plates and tiles, so it looks lke a normal wooden roof, or also for example with red/white bricks to let it look like a tent. But that should everybody decide for himseld, just a few ideas from me. -

As i said before, i think that depends on what exactly is beeing built. For example if it is a corner tower, it of course should be closed at all sides. For example the blacksmith area i think it would be enough to have the catwalk and, say a "cardboard" style roof, made of wooden parts or something like that. -

Thanks ISC, i highly appreciate that! Now, i took your words and even it's night here i couldn't resist to build a quick sketch of my idea of the blacksmith area. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on it. I personally think it would look better on a dark bley basebplate, but unfortunately i don't have one at the moment so i had to took the green one. -

Thanks, cool that you put me in for the blacksmith area, that's one of my favourite things in the castle world. I just have a few more questons. First, now we decided that the wall itself should only be about 4 studs thick, do we have any guidlines or points to hold on on how to buld the rooms itself? I mean, i must admit that i don't really have the picture yet on how the whole thing should look behind the wall. As for the blacksmith area, i would imagine it isn't really a room, but an open area, like for example this. please tell me what you think It's almost half past 3 in the night herte, but that didn't stop me from starting bulding something again, i'm already obsessed with it I took your idea for the wall as inspiration, and i thought maybe we should move the hole bricks more to the outside, for example like i did, 2 studs from the baseplate cause if they are in the middle that will be a problem for like the blacksmith area or other open rooms cause the bricks would be in the middle of where nothing else is. You can see i made the wall basically 3 studs thick, built 1 stud into the baseplate to leave space for things like the 2x3 slope bricks. There is still enough place above for the catwalk. Tell me what you think -
I always thought decals were such thngs that attach with help of water, kinda like stamps, but i could be wrong though.
-
I think i'm the only one that doesn't really care if they are stickers or not. I mean, several older sets already had stickers, or worse, decals, and nobody was complaining. i actually do see that as somethng positive because you can use those parts for different things then, because they are not printed and stuck to something special.

I believe that these are the basic helmets how they look after coming out of the plastic extruder machine. As far as i know, the silver/golden/copper colour is "painted" on afterwards. I remember someone (i think at classic castle) saying, that he had a helmet where the colour already was going off weeks after he bought the Dwarve's Mine and the helmet was light bley under it. Anyway, this seems to be a rather rare issue as i didn't hear about a second person having the same problem.
-
also, it's still about 3 months till it will be released, and there never have been uploaded instruction until one or 2 weeks before the release as far as i remeber. Lately they even get uploaded weeks after the sets are already out, for example for the taj mahal or the death star.

Well, i actually told my parents about it and they said there's no need to buy it myself, i'll get it for my birthday. Ain't that good news?

@ISC: I was already thinking about something similar, but as i said i just wanted to build a raw prototype of what i was thinking about. I like how you made the wall segment, the adding of such detals as tiles on the outside and 2x3 slope bricks gives it a nice touch. -

Alright, i already thought something like that and in the meanwhile i tried to build a VERY RAW prototype of what i thought a module could look like. Once again note, that it's very raw and i only want to show my idea with it. That's about the way it could look on the outside wall: The backside is left open, i think there everybody could decide for himself if he puts in a wall or something other, for example a horse stable there would not be needed walls necessarily: And as i mentioned before, the roof or catwalk could be attached with modular building technique: What do you think about that idea? -

The first part is pretty clear to me, but what do you mean with catwalk? -

You are right, my mistake. So what is left is, how to build the sides, and if there should be a roof or not. I think it could be difficult to build a roof that fits to all other castle parts in the end, as everybody might have his own thoughts on that. If a roof is being built i think the best would be to make it modular style so you are able to access the room from above (like the green grocer roof and floors for example). What do you think? -

Sounds like a good solution to me. I just rawly built what you described, so it is clear for everybody where to put the hole brcks and how high t should be. I hope i did understand it right myself too -

Yes i agree now, that would be better. So, my first question would be, how these creations rawly should look. Should they bey be complete rooms with 4 walls, doors and a roof, or just the interior and say, 2 walls? that's the thing which intersts me the most at the moment. -

That does sound very good KimT, i was thinking about the same. First we should have a discussion/poll which things exactly are needed or wanted for the castle and then create extra threads for each "castle part" that should be built with polls added which decide what creations will make it to the final castle. -

That sounds great, count me in! Though i'm not sure what to exactly buld yet, i'd very much like to be in. -
Btw. has anybody noticed that the new telescope piece is also used for the orc queen's "i don't know the name of it thing" with the lightning bolt? Seems this piece will got a lot of use in future sets.
