  1. You will not get that ship for that price unless a) lots of pieces are missing (which is OK if you have the spares) b) no instruction, no box, chewed up sails and missing men/cannons c) the seller is an idiot and mis-described it. As Mattz said: supply and demand. Gyl BSc, MD, MeBT (the first two are obvious, the last is "Master of eBay Trolling"
  2. Yep. Incredible. Puts TLC to shame...... still waiting for my bricklink order to come so I can make some of these...... grrrr....
  3. I'm so glad you said that  and I'm glad that the toy store staff recognise this fact :$ I believe you will find that most Lego purchased for little kids is purchased by their parents or grandparents at WalMart, Target, TRU, etc (whatever your local big box toy store The Lego Stores aren't generally competitive for current sets price-wise, especially around holiday time, and the only reason to go to them is for special merchadising, Pick-A-Brick, or the for "experience", which is an AFOL thing, not a kid thing.
  4. Well, if the box is the indicator, the dune buggy is the main model. I can't say I disagree - the tractor was a hideous thing (no offense intended to the few who liked it), not that yet another duge bunny holds much interest for me either. I have officially given up on Adventurers for 2006. Sigh. Here's hoping for 2007. Please TLC, don't let Johnny die!
  5. I guess this is good, if it keeps TLC profitable so they can make more interesting things than spaceship after spaceship after spaceship.
  6. To see the impact of licenses, just look at the posts at EB - clearly the most diverse Lego community. 90% of the excitment, posts, debate, and anticipation centres around the licensed sets How much time do we spend on designers, Xpods, and brick buckets? Technic, dear as it is to my heart, generates little discussion. Instead we talk about Batman, Starwars, Spongy, and recently even Avatar. Obviously TLC needs the licenses. And clealry most of us need them too. If TLC does licenses well, like Spongebob - about which many including me were very skeptical - they are a great addition to the Lego lineup.
  7. I have to agree with pretty much everything you say KMOI. Avatar has potential to be a medium term license (2-3 years). It is a very well made show compared to nearly anything else out there now for this target audience. It may become huge, but one can never predict that sort of thing reliably. It is only in its first year. When Yugioh was in its first year or DBZ, no one had heard of them. I would say Avatar is ahead of where they were at 1 year. The marketing of Avatar has not even begun - Lego is actually the first license for them I believe. If you do an eBay search on Avatar you will find nothing but DVDs. A CCG is coming up for Avatar, and the interest level among kids is very high. If TV shows were stocks, I would be putting all my money on Avatar.
  8. Frankly, don't you think they are running out of SW ideas? They even had to recycle the ISD. How many X wings and Tie fighters and Slave ships and snow speeders can you take. I can't imagine there is a lot more juice to squeeze out of SW. The sandcrawler and sail barge to me seem to be pretty much the last big things. I watched a good number of Spongebob episodes. My impression is that the variety of locales and sets is very limited. I totally cannot imagine what they could do with SB next that would be significantly different than what they have now. All this is my personal opinion - I have no particular inside information or insight into the workings of TLC
  9. I assume Batman is meant to replace SW in the next few years, and seems like a good choice. Batman, like Star Wars and Harry Potter, is a license with "legs", meaning that they can get several or many years out of it. Avatar and Spongebob are not - at least Spongebob is not. There's not much more to Spongebob than the sets we already have - IMHO. Avatar is a very successful kids's show right now, and is likely to get much more popular in the next year or two. They might get more out of it. However, neither can replace something like HP long term. I would predict that TLC will come up with one or two short term licenses every year, just to keep some variety and interest in things.
  10. Not quite so pathological, but it's bad enough. Eventually I realize the futility of keeping a 3000 part MOC on the shelf gathering dust, but it is very painful to take it down. Usually I have to build something new to replace the old one before I take the old one apart. In the last 2 years I have typically built something big every 4-6 months I'm just planning my next one now - I was going to make it a Robin Hood vs Prince John battle scene, castle on one side, forest on the other, and battle on the plains in front of the castle, 4 baseplates, but in the last couple of weeks my interest has turned to home decor. The one thing that helps me take down the big MOCs is replacing the pieces into my bins, and watching my stocks fill up again. I like that feeling. But I never built anything nearly as ambitious as this ship. I can't imagine taking down something like that after spending all that time to build it. At least not for a very long time. I also wouldn't want to spend so much time on a single thing. I find that towards the end of any MOC I kinda wanna be done with it, do something new, and its a bit of a drag putting the finishing touches on it, even though the last 5% of building makes 50% of the look. Oh, and as for buying more parts.... it seems I do that constantly. At some point they will find my dead body crushed under lego pieces. Can't help it, just keep finding pieces I gotta have - don't even use them most of the time. Yes, I know, it's all pretty insane. But, with regular psychotherapy and strong drugs I am improving  Gyl
  11. Short memory! I showed you a picture of it just a couple of days ago  http://brickshelf.com/gallery/gylman/5571/p2010059.jpg lucky I put the back wheels on inside-out. part number 32003 Cheers Gyl
  12. Toywiz.com says it's $50. An excellent price if you ask me! 50$ for 700 bricks most of which are useful. That's darn good. A lot of large plates in there, railings, a nice girl fig...... I'm impressed. too bad its bley. If it was real gray I would probably grab a whole bunch of them.
  13. I'll likely get the ship for the figs and parts. High part count... wonder how much it will cost. It looks ugly though. I assume that's mostly bley :( My kids will probably like it, and they are the target audience (7-12). I'll undoubtedly end up getting the temple for them. Oh, more money to TLC. That's OK.
  14. I'm looking for a lot of brown parts, especially small ones, plates, and tiles. Can anyone suggest which set makes the best parts pack for this? The sandcrawler is too expensive and mostly has bricks it seems. Any others? Thanks. (or, if anyone wants to sell me a bunch of brown bits, or trade)
  15. Hobbes, it's the UCS batmobile that does not seem to lok as nice in "real life" as in the pictures we have seen until now. IMHO anyway.
  16. Well, I cancelled my order and will try to get an old gray 10030, new or used does not matter. It's a future parts pack.
  17. Wow! So many sets to see. Can't............... Absorb.................It.................. All.................... Mind.............. Melting................... Actually , Duplo 2006 looks awesome. Wish I was 4, not 40. Technic looks good (fire truck, that treaded crane! and of course ModelTeam type truck)! Count me out on ExoForce, and Batman... meh, a mishmash. Not my cup-o-tea. The Batmobile looked better in pictures than in real life. Figs look good from a distance. Wish we had better pics of the StarWars sets. They look nice from a distance. Clearly the 2006 theme winner is TECHNIC!!!!! Go Lego! :-D
  18. More fun than a barrel full of ...... just about anything. As a pentagenarian I cannot believe I am looking forward to getting these, but I most certainly am. KK and BB are great - gonna see lots of play in my house. Spongebob's and Plankton's adventure looks like a parts pack to me.
  19. Welll... uh.... thanks for letting me know
  20. Oh dear. That's a problem. >:( I'm gonna have to see if I can cancel my order. I have no use for 26 pounds of bley. I'm not one of those crazy anti-bley people, but I have a lot of old gray for castle mocs, and I can't very well mix them I don't think. Gotta choose one or the other. I'll have to find a used ISD somewhere on eBay I guess.
  21. Actually this is not a minor point. Do you mean the light blue-gray (bley?) I ordered an ISD recently hoping to first build it, and eventually have a good supply of the light grays for future projects. If I get 400$ worth of Bley I will be very upset. Better to know now and cancel the order (not due for over a month). Are we talking about bley?????
  22. It ends like this http://hem.passagen.se/replikant/nuclear_holocaust.JPG Or like this. http://homepage.mac.com/cparada/GML/000Ima...termath6024.jpg Doesn't matter whether we are talking about now, or about 3000 years ago. It is the nature of humans to destroy themselves due to inability to compromise, greed, stupidity, and lust for power. Civilization is only a thin veneer, underneath which our essential inhumanity is always present. Religion is a two edged sword. On the good side - it teaches that certain destructive and selfish behaviours are "bad", and that other useful behaviours are "good", and in doing so promotes human survival and growth. On the bad side, there is an unavoidable tendency of believers to believe that only their religion is right. Those that do not share your beliefs are "wrong", eventually to be "converted". When it is apparent that they cannot be converted, either they have to be destroyed, or tolerated. Tolerance does not appear to be a prominent element of human nature, or of most religious teachings. Hatred and jealousy are all too easily manipulated by the intolerance to serve their ends. It appeared that humanism (modern humanism) was replacing Christian Humanism in Europe and much of North America, i.e. that they were becoming post-religious as has been said. That was the hope for a better future for humanity. However, this certainly has not occurred in other major religions and seems to be backsliding in the United States, where creationism is back on schoolbooks, and major public figures proclaim that they believe in salvation through the apocalypse. Interestingly, it seems that in both Muslim and Christian worlds the hard core fanatics are a minority, yet they seem able to carry power beyond their numbers because of their willingness to go to any length to support their beliefs, while the moderates are busy with their good lives, families, secular ambitions, and do not have the will to stand up and form an opposition which would surely win if mobilized. Oh well, gotta end this ramble, kids want to play
  23. Hi, I am looking for these sets. Will trade or pay for 1 or both of them. I have tons of Starwars Sets, Technic, City, HP, Castle, Pirates, Modelteam, and spare parts. Each person in deal takes care of own shipping costs. Probably outside of North America this trade is not worthwhile due to costs of shipping. EDIT: I have worked something out for Spiderman Origins. Still looking for Scary Laboratory 1382
  24. Ur a better man than I. I don't have the heart to take big mocs apart, even medium ones are a battle. It usually requires some crisis to make them go down.
