Another Coaster attempt
Gijserman replied to BobBongo1895's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm working on a new type of coaster based on the same concept as your one Now I just need thousands of pin joiners... Anyone? -
Working on a new type of LEGO roller coaster, here's a quick glimpse

We did test heights, but only with 1 car. This height seemed to be just right, but the curve also gives it some extra speed.. so yeah, you might be right, could be a little lower probably (but not much lower)

We use 1x4 plates to link the track pieces together and 2x8 plates to click them in on their side. like in this image So no, you don't need the connector plates, only if you want to make plat curves

Cool! Let me warn you though: It requires a lot of work, patience and lego If you do make a roller coaster I'd love to see a video of it! Let me know if you need and tips It's definitely fixable. Next time we will start testing the track with minifigs right from the start

Some people might wonder what would happen with minifigs on this track. We actually tested! See for yourself

It really is a nice way to spend your weekend, although it brings some frustrations Some parts (the lift, the loop and all the supports) are intact, so we have a head start for the next one

Thanks! You are not mistaking the cars are really ON the rails, with nothing but gravitational forces to keep it on there. We did 2 runs with 24 minifigs in the seats and once that reached the banked curve, it just fell off. I'll see if I have some good images that show what's going on. The roller coaster itself was taken apart at the end of the weekend, as it takes a lot of space in the living room

I think we will use the same same type of curves we used with the roller coaster in video at the start of this topic, but maybe a little more reinforced and a bit smoother.. It's not the curves I'm worried about, it's the chain lift and the loop. I'm not sure the lego chain will be able to pull up all this weight without breaking and I'm certainly not sure if the loop can handle all these forces... Will find out soon enough though.. Gijs

We experimented with more cars, but without success so far. In the curves they derail pretty easy, because the front car is being pushed rather than going on its own. Loopings have to be built really strong, cause the weight of the cars is much heigher.. Stuff like that. I'm going to do some more experimenting with more cars though, just ordered some extra lego on bricklink just for that purpose

Cool, looks very promising!
