Yeah. While I wouldn't mind them retreading old ground (CCBS remakes of the Bohrok or Phantoka would be awesome) I guess it depends on where they want to go with it. It's pretty obvious that they're starting on 2001 again, but whether it will go straight to the 2002 story with Bohrok, or somewhere new entirely, is anyone's guess. If they went somewhere new with it, I'd rather have easter eggs than none of the old stuff at all.

I gave an example a while back of the new Matoran (still assuming that there are any) crafting masks out of powered disks (a reference to Kanoka). There could also be a village covered in Visorak webbing, the inclusion of later masks like the Mask of Fusion, old Rahi in new forms... maybe an amnesic Dark Hunter could wash up on shore one day. They don't have to call them by their old names if it would confuse new fans, but their inclusion would be a cool reference to those who were with Bionicle in those years.

Oh, hahaha. Sorry, fast-paced discussion is fast. Well of course, there are gonna be old fans asking questions about the relaunch at stores too, so I think that document supplies the employees with answers to customers' questions (including the possible name-change of Toa to Masters)... could be wrong though.

Half the reason LOTR was written was so that Tolkien could show off the language he created. Does that make LOTR terrible too, then? :/

I didn't take it as fact, I took it as a possible explanation. Bear in mind that this document is for store employees, not young children, so they would likely already be familiar with the basic Bionicle terminology.

Huh? When did I get pissed off about anything in this topic? I was expressing my disappointment, not anger. And I don't think Matoro will be returning either, so...

Well, at least I know now I'm not completely insane. Karda Nui was my favourite era too. Hmm, I never thought about it like that. I was just saying that them ditching the alien terminology (which I thought added to the mystical and mysterious vibe) didn't look good, and then suddenly the whole site is at war with me. Then again, I could have been wrong in everything I've assumed from the start because I'm basing most of my opinions off a document that could or could not be legit. Guess I (and we) will just have to wait and see.

I guess I don't. I always saw it as an epic sci-fi/fantasy story, when it seems that only the "true fans!" are allowed to like it, with the reason that it's about "a bunch of natives with funny masks running around an island and hitting rabid animals". Greg also stated that his favourite thing about Bionicle was the "depth and complexity of the story", so I guess he's wrong too. Good thing he's gone then, huh?

So the original terminology was over complicated and full of unnecessary jargon? I thought that was your favourite era! Also please explain how I am presenting my opinions as fact.

Even without acknowledging anything past the Mata Nui era, it still looks like everything has been dumbed down way more than it was originally, which is disappointing (again, assuming that the document leak is real). That is the reason why me and many others didn't care for HF. It claimed to be the successor of Bionicle and yet shared virtually no similarities to it whatsoever (they even changed the building system a year later!) lol ok. Not my fault that you're mad. I'm not trying to make anyone mad, just presenting my opinions. That is what a discussion topic is for, right?

See my post which is literally above this one that I'm quoting now. I'm complaining that they are excluding me because I'm a fan who didn't get interested in 01, and that seems to be all they are going off. Is that so hard to understand? It'd be nice if the Matoran (assuming there are some in the new story, but of course they'll probably be called something generic like "villagers") could make masks out of different kinds of powerful disks, for example. That would be a nod to the Metru-Nui arc, which wouldn't cause a lot of confusion or as Greg would say, "open a can of worms". As to your point about it being purely shock value, having little content blah blah blah, that's your opinion. Don't present it as fact.

Yeah, except Greg's been hinting that it has virtually nothing to do with the original MoCr anyway. The name "mask of creation" on its own could mean a lot of things, and now it means something else to what it originally did. They probably didn't use the name "Mask of Life" because they didn't want little kids to stumble across the old story online, because it was a pretty major plot point.

No. I want something, anything, from one of its years past Mata Nui to be referenced. It feels like when people talk about Bionicle, the island of Mata Nui is all they seem to think of, when it was much more than that. I get the impression that if it was the average EB member writing the new story, it would just be a bunch of natives with funny masks running around an island and hitting rabid animals for the rest of time. Funny you should criticize the way that everything was "dangerous" in the later years, as if it wasn't in the beginning with giant Rahi rampaging through villages and trapping Matoran underwater, for example. Plus which sci-fi/fantasy stories can you think of that are happy-happy-joy-joy all the time? None, because if there were any, they would suck.

Like what? Reusing the names of the Mata? Because that's not what I meant. You could have checked out Bionicle when it first launched in 01, given up and walked away a year later, but you'd still know who they were when you decided to give it another go in 2015. I'm talking about the fans who stuck with it to the very end. 2001-2010. Understand?

I suppose I should have clarified that I'm assuming that the "leaked document" is legit, and going from there. But let's face it, after the story that was given to Bionicle's replacement, and them kicking GregF off the story team (one of the only people at TLG who helped the story live up to its true potential), I have every right to be troubled by this development.

They should have just stuck with HF if they're going to dumb it down this much. This isn't BIONICLE, just a shadow of 2001 with generic villains and no alien terminology whatsoever. Apart from the six Toa Mata (who aren't even going to be called that anymore), there is absolutely no relation to the real BIONICLE at all. I can guarantee that terms like Toa/Turaga/Matoran/Rahi/Kanohi won't be used in the story anymore either. I suppose it's my fault for getting my hopes up and thinking perhaps that TLG would find some way to honour the fans that had stuck with it till the very end and beyond, but I was wrong. I'll be back in a few years to see if the story has evolved to a point where it's worth bothering about - but I did that with HF, and look where that ended up.

As long as we get SOMEONE who was conceived later than 2001, then I'm happy.

Gali's mask looks amazing, but not as a mask for Gali. Still, I'm not gonna hold that against them - I actually loved the Phantoka/Mistika masks, especially Lewa and Onua's, and these evoke a similar vibe.

He also compared it to DC comics, and how they "reboot" their universes all the time - the old stories still happened, just in another universe. So I guess that settles it. I remain hopeful that, like DC, they choose to keep some of the characters and themes from the old Bionicle (beyond the Mata Nui era...) in the reboot. We haven't seen much of that so far, with only stuff from '01 being mentioned, like the Mata and golden masks. Maybe we will just have to wait until 2021 for Barraki 2.0 after all =P

Aye. While the focus of the franchise is indeed the sets instead of the story, BIONICLE's story activated my imagination more than any other franchise during my childhood. Perhaps it was that humans had no part to play. Perhaps it was that these radically different beings banded together to discover the secrets of their universe. It was a universe which I spent a long time in as I wrote fanfic and slavishly read comic after comic, book after book. But whatever the team in Denmark was going for, they got it, because I bought as many sets as I could afford every year on top of that. Now when Hero Factory was introduced, I bought one set, Von Nebula, to see how it was. The actual set was good, but it didn't feel special in any way because I didn't know the character. So I tried to get into the story, but it was boring and unoriginal (robots are built to fight defective robots!) and to be fair, there wasn't much of it to sink my teeth into anyway. I bought Evo 2.0 the following year just to see what the new building system was like, and while I loved the new ball sockets, the build just seemed so much simpler than anything that had come before... it was literally just a skeleton with armour on top, nothing more. I remember at the time, one of my friends said that "HF is to Bionicle what Duplo is to System". That was the last HF set I ever bought. I am optimistic about #BIO2015, and I like the designs because they seem to be blending CCBS with Technic a lot more, even including a gear system. But if the story is very simple like HF's rather than sprawling and ambitious like Bionicle's was, I just won't be able to bring myself to care about the new line.

Because I'm someone who is more interested in story, which in turn leads me to buy the sets. Let me give you an example: if you're considering getting into Star Trek, are you going to watch the series first and then buy the merchandise due to your interest in it, or buy the merch before even watching the series and knowing what it is about?

It honestly depends how the story is. While I love the sets as they are, old and new, I've always been more inclined to get the physical versions of the characters I liked in the story more than the ones that were boring or didn't have much of a role at all (although the first set I bought for myself was Morak, he is an exception ). One of the many reasons I am extremely wary of the new story being a reboot - if it is as effortlessly simplistic as HF's story was, I probably won't bother getting any sets at all and just continue on with other hobbies instead.

I don't think replacing everything they were building up to with "oh look pieces of another robot appeared in the desert out of nowhere" and "Let's make Teridax suddenly decide to fly to Bara Magna and fight Mata Nui for no reason!" was a satisfying ending, personally...

Author spends some of his free time writing Bionicle serials. He has no obligation to do so, but does it for the fans. So he chooses to write about one of his favourite characters to make things easier. Screw him, right?
