Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Pauolo replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I ordered it on the 1st and it's still not shipped. Which happens a lot when Lego releases so many sets at once on the same day... I would have bought it directly in store if not for Lego gift cards I had to use and which are not accepted in franchised store, only on the official website and in stores directly managed by Lego. Someone mentioned new parts are added to PAB around 4 months after a set's release, but I guess it's not always true. I too want to get some marching band uniforms to complete the fanfare for my modular city. -

Đặng Hoàng also designed 10362 French Café and, tbh, I have a hard time identifying what he attempted there as art nouveau. Even the color palette choice feels questionable to me. But I'm probably harsh on it because I'm tired with the dumb romantic clichés of Paris... On the other hand, I feel he nailed the aspect of the music shop in the new modular. That's the kind of building and style you actually can see a lot in Paris and other big French cities. Even the furniture shop looks like small buildings I've seen in French cities. The color palette though is still more colorful than the real buildings (or else there would be a lot more of tan, sand yellow and dirty white), but that's to be expected from modulars. Replace PR's olive bricks with tan ones and you'd get a somewhat more realist yet boring building. -

From what I know, the main negative criticism about DD was that its style clashes with the rest of the series, regardless of its awesome shapes and building techniques. Meanwhile, the Sanctum Sanctorum gets a lot of praise for how it integrates with other modulars, despite it not having the same scale as the rest of the series to the point of looking squashed next to BH. Just saying, there's a lot of double standards in the AFOL community... -

That's my thoughts on the modular series. I've only been following it since the Jazz Club but I've seen a lot of criticism on most of the recent sets that don't welcome changes, different architecture styles and color usage. Or forget that the builds' scale have their own limitations. That said, I don't understand how off-brand modulars can be popular even though they look less professional and inventive than Lego's. Most I've seen are a mish-mash of colors and overbearing façade details, block-ish shapes with no clever angle techniques, etc... -

I'm not sure what you mean by rapidly falling. This set's review situation seems like an exception compared to the past 3 years or so. -

I doubt there's some form of embargo on reviews of the 2026's modular. However, there's so many sets of various size (79 according to the Lego website) coming out on January 1st that it may have bloated the reviewers' plannings. Also the fact that the set got revealed so late, and was probably shipped to reviewers late... -

Not just Brickset, it's also true for a few other websites I follow. I know that most of them are getting their review sets from Amazon through an affiliation program. It could be Amazon didn't get or send enough copies to reviewers, or sent them late and those reviewers are still writing their review. -

I'm fine with with modular-related GWP being either a vehicle or kiosk/food stand/fountain or simply scenery elements (like 40221). As long as it's a subject that hasn't been done repeatedly in City or Friends themes (like hot dog stands or coffee carts). But regarding scenery elements, I feel that Lego has been encouraging fans to make their own models. 2 years ago, they released 3 plans for free to be made out of Pick-a-Brick orders: https://brickset.com/article/101751/modular-building-compatible-models-added-to-pick-a-brick I certainly want to make a modular-compatible city park, integrate a modded 40778 and the past Fountain gwp. -

In the end, my project wasn't selected. 😔 But of the 15 selected ones, I really like the urban face sketcher. I feel that was never done by Lego before. It could work well as part of a modular park. Anyway, here's the full list of the 15 selected submissions. Votes are open up until January 6: https://beta.ideas.lego.com/blog/50dccdde-f014-4e63-b461-e53225c4208e -

Thanks! 😁 On another subject, I think it's a shame that Lego didn't make more modular-compatible sets as part of their seasonal themes (Winter Village, Lunar New Year, Easter, Halloween, etc...). More parks like 80107 would have been great, like a a snowy one with a Christmas market as part of Winter Village for example. -

It's this one: https://beta.ideas.lego.com/challenges/13efb619-ae00-43e3-9e81-12e34008710f/entries/64bcadb0-9b6e-44cd-93d5-a36ffbc7745e I've seen some pretty good submissions in the competition. I like a lot the book vendor from AdmiralHardheadedTiger that looks exactly like the many green book seller boxes allong the Seine in Paris. It would be a great addition to the PR. -

Speaking of modular-related GWP, I hope that the winner of the current City Life Creations challenge on Ideas fits the retro aesthetics of modulars rather than the modern look of City sets. And that it's buyable with Insiders points like the Flying Moon Car (40789) instead of requiring a certain pay treshold. I submitted a set to that challenge and just received yestersay the parts I ordered to build it. Even if it doesn't win, I'm still glad I submitted it. -

I think it's better that this kind of GWP is not tied to a specific set's launch, and be proposed on more than one occasion. Lego have been pushing their luck with launch-exclusive GWP too much lately... -

Market Street had the shortest run, with less than 2 years according to the dates on Brick Economy. It was retired before Café Corner, even before Fire Brigade was released. I doubt popularity is the only thing to be taken into account about whether a set gets retired or not. I believe part production and availability also matters. And in some cases where a new set is too similar in some aspect to another, the older one gets retired before the other one is released. Like AS being retired just as NHM got released because they both sit on 1.5 baseplates. -

I'm torn. On one hand, I like having the most in a set when it feels thematically connected. On the other hand, these being GWP means the designers can do some extra art as stickers (like the vintage version of the Cargo logo on the Moving Truck) without impacting the budget of the main sets. And yes, for such small sets, I don't mind applying a single sheet of stickers. Weird thing to note is that all modular-related GWP before the Corner Kiosk were offered months after the release of a modular, at multiple occasions and with more options than buying one specific set. Between that and making a GWP related to a big 18+ set only available for that set's launch, there's no better option right now... Still, I'm glad that for modulars, the designers are consistent with the vintage style. -

Good observation! Also, the Town Hall logo is on the band kids' hats. It could also be a fortunate coincidence. This angle makes sense if you imagine that the alley crosses the street and continues in the foreground. It makes for a believable old city street planning imho. I can think of real-life example where narrow streets are crossing and create this kind of small plaza because of the angles. -

A reviewer posted pics of SS next to some other modulars: https://www.reddit.com/r/legomodular/s/j5PcgUYkSS I really like the look with PR to the right. Especially with how the lines of the furniture shop continue on the restaurant's façade. -

I think he is, yes. From what I gathered, he worked on 10334 Retro Radio, 21358 Minifigure Vending Machine and 10362 French Café. Honestly, I'm not impressed with the French Café as the architecture style doesn't look like anything French to me. SS looks certainly more art nouveau in comparison. -

The back of the building has what appears as 1x8 sand green bricks. If that is true, and that the 1x2 sand green brick with a groove is also used on the building, then that means GG will definitely be more affordable to part out. -

Me too, I'm surprised it's not just the price in US dollars that got increased... Although, that set has more parts than any of the last 32x32 modulars. I'm also a bit disappointed that the back has so few details. I would have hoped the narrow alley would lead to more than a bare backyard. -

I'm not 100% for stickers, but I don't mind them if it's only on GWP. Plus, the art for the stickers in the modulars' GWP is pretty good. -

The GWP for the launch of the new modular has been posted on Lego's website: https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/vintage-parade-car-40913 I'm guessing it's supposed to be paired with the band's kids of SS. You can see some more brick built instruments on the new image of SS on that page too. Also, the banner has the same logo as TH's, for a nice reference. -

I can see why some people on Reddit would compare that new modular to a Creator one. Color-wise, it reminds me a bit of 31141 Main Street. Especially the combination of white, dark blue and gold. But that's where the comparison ends imho. Tbh, I'm a bit biased regarding modulars. There's none I dislike in the main series, certainly not enough to not buy one. I'm a bit puzzled about the color palette of SS, but still love the shape of it. It will look great with other tall modulars like the GE, TH, GG, etc... @PatrickLisse I replaced the 1x8 sand green bricks in my GG by 1x6 bricks, and using a few other sizes to fill in the gaps. I had to redraw the whole model on Studio.io to plan the steps. It was a long task, but so worth it once I finally assembled it. I also replaced the 1x2 bricks with a groove by off-brand ones, for now. The color came close enough.
