  1. Nice update! I like the interior a lot, with the inverted arches, I'm considering in using that piece in my next ship too The stern still needs work, I think that if you are building from the waterline then the rudder shouldn't be that high. Anyway in what concerns the prow I only think that perhaps you should unite somehow with a few plates (parallel to the 4 dark grey you placed there) the structure, but I'm not very familiar with the ship so perhaps thats inaccurate. Keep working!
  2. I'm quite impressed. The design is great, unusual techniques and a fantastic colour scheme. For me the blue-red-green-tan pattern really makes it a delicious ship to look at. I also like the sails and the masts platforms, which have a quite unique idea, and all the ornaments around the ship. For a relatively small build he achieved great detail! Very very good job!
  3. Yes, one of the ships passes over the other Still the battle is tremendously funny and the ships are built with incredible detail, so I recommend everyone to watch the movie
  4. I just came from watching the movie and I must say it is great, it joins plot from "The Secret of the Unicorn", "Red Rackham's Treasure" and "The Red Sea Sharks" I didn't knew they had translated the names of Milu to Snowy and of the Duponts to Thomson… Besides that it is perfect, and has a great sea battle, though somewhat "fantastic". I really liked it, the image quality is astonishing
  5. In terms of maneuverability SES is basically equal to IFS, but for sure the IFS is faster with all those square-rigged sails. Main point is not only the number of cannons but the ships' strength. The IFS is much much taller than the SES and for sure has a frame with more strength; considering they both have the same number of cannons if it is only a "cannon battle" I'm sure the IFS would win… In terms of deck-fight probably the SES would win, because it has a bigger crew, though the IFS doesn't have an adequate number of soldiers for its size. Between all LEGO ships IFS is the strongest, followed directly by SES.
  6. The story of the ship is rather interesting. Hergé commissioned a model ship to a skilled Belgian ship-models maker of Le Brillant, a french ship, for inspiration an accurate drawings. This was a very heavy ship (don't remember the number of guns, but for sure 40+). And of course I also dream of making La Licorne one day Here you have a very nice link of models with really detailed pictures of La Licorne, Le Soleil Royal and Le Brillant: http://users.skynet....ierre.guillaume And I read all Tintin books more than 8 times My favorite is probably Destination Moon but I can't say, I just love all of them
  7. Am I the only one excited with the release of the new Tintin movie — Le Secret de la Licorne? Besides being a great fan of Tintin adventures, I knew I couldn't miss it, as no ships' fan can: it features extensive action with the Licorne, an amazing french vessel created by Hergé (inspired by an historical existing ship)!
  8. WOW! Fantastic! Great ships, buildings, everything… And a number of bricks with 10 algarisms
  9. Well, the problem of tiling it is: number of parts I don't want the ship to be extremely expensive, and with a tiled hull this new design would be useless… I know it is quite tall, but it is precisely because I am building the entire hull. This is quite unusual but I intend to place the ship in water, so only the waterline part will be seen I have no idea how this new design will turn out in real bricks, so let's try! White hulls were my first thought. The point is that there are no pre-fabs in white As the top line is green (in the real ship), it would be nice if this one was also… Another problem concerning parts: hinge bricks in green are extremely rare… For colour coherence both the top and the line formed by hinge bricks should be in the same colour. Green is completely out of question, so I probably will have to make the top in yellow or blue. What do you think: blue or yellow? (prices are about the same) Many thanks for all this feedback, this is my first LDD project, so… I'm not very concerned with the widening of the curves as I can easily do that in real bricks
  10. I have uploaded them. Here is the link: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/292575 Here is the link for the Brickshelf folder, I think everyone can see it, but I'm not sure: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=484506 Thanks for the advise, Sebeus, and in fact my prow is a little too short, though I don't think it should be wider than the middle. In the link I also posted one top view for comparing purposes. The gundeck is finished, though the prow still needs lots of work. Thanks for feedback!
  11. I wonder how many bricks you have, to build 3 ships and a huge diorama all at the same time… What is even more amazing is that, even if the design of this new ship is mostly the same as in the Princess Ceinwyn, it still looks special and unique… You're indeed a great builder, and I hope to see your sea-battle!
  12. Only one… The Imperial Flagship…
  13. Of course it is! Just a small update, to record progress... Building the walls, at a 10º angle, was quite a pain... I had to constantly change coordinates… Also, the Batavia is a 24-guns ship, but I will place only 12, because I don't have so many and I really don't think it adds a lot, so I save a lot of money, and deck space
  14. In the overall your ship is just WOW! However, I have some comments to make: 1) add perhaps extra length 2) I think you could work some more details in the stern 3) I know doing flags in cloth requires a lot of time, but flags in paper are weird, because they are all strained, and that would never happen unless you had springs in their ends 4) I am not sure, but to me it looks as if the bowsprit is doing a greater angle than it should in relation to the deck Just tome feedback, you have here a great project, very nice colour scheme, shape, sails, keep working!
  15. I'm afraid I agree with previous posts about the hull shape... Other point is that if you are going to build it so tall and wide you should probably add extra length, to keep the proportions... Anyway it is a massive project and is looking pretty impressive, so I'm looking forward to see it finished!
  16. Thanks for your quick and informative reply. About capstan that was mainly my idea, but thanks for the link here on E.B.. About anchors I will use something that looks fine... My problem is that there aren't a lot of images with ships and anchor for comparing sizes. Still, I will follow the general rule: if it looks good, it is good. Thanks again for quick feedback.
  17. 1) Can someone enlighten me on the function of the capstan? I wanted to make a almost fully functional capstan, but I couldn't find great thing on the Internet... Should it move any specific ropes/cables/axles or does it change from capstan to capstan and from ship to ship? Can someone help me? 2) I couldn't find either great thing on anchor sizes... Do you think that for a 70 studs-long ship a 6 studs-long anchor (the one in the Imperial Flagship) will do, or should I go for a brick one?
  18. Yeah big mistake Anyway I try to post weekly updates, but this was a busy week so I didn't advanced a lot... Anyway my hull pieces don't have that holes, so no worries on that...
  19. I also have interest in steering, and also couldn't find anything by myself I have also another question: anchors. Anchor sizes, weights, and historical mechanisms... I couldn't find either great info...
  20. I am using plate 1x2 with 1 stud to make the offset and then I will use hinge bricks. Updates will perhaps come at the end of the week. I am having an issue, as I am building the gun's deck. Historically, ships' decks were extremely low. Here you have a picture of the Batavia gun's deck (hope everyone can see it): I would say this is 4 studs high, perhaps 5, when comparing to minifigure scale. Minifigs usually need decks 6 studs high to be able to stand up. What do you think? Should I build the deck 6 studs high for "minifig comfort" or 4/5 studs high?
  21. I just read the steps you have created... I have a doubt: what is better than perfect?
  22. I was thinking on buying a ship for Christmas but after seeing the pictures of the Black Pearl I definitively decided NO. It's just too bad, I think. Not to speak about the size, the terrible sails and even the minifigs (almost always very good) don't worth the money. About the QAR I'm not a great fan either, though I think its far better. Have you considered buying an old pirate set like BSB or Skull Eye's Schooner at a decent price at Bricklink?
  23. The only LEGO ship I bought is Imperial Flagship and it is a great ship to start! You get a great number of parts, most of them useful, many minifigs (9), 4 cannons and you learn a lot of the shipbuilding process just by following the instructions. I could assemble 3 quite different ships almost only with the parts of the Imperial Flagship: a caravel, a carrack and a brig. Now I am going to buy (at Christmas) parts to make an LDD project (Batavia WIP), but I think that to start the I.F. is just great! Good luck with your projects
  24. Sebeus' anchor is pretty good... I don't know the size you need, you know Lego made anchor parts? If you don't need one very big you may use one of them...
  25. I just don't get it. I use safari (I have a Mac) and I have everything updated, my file names are really simple, 1.jpg, 2.jpg, etc... About conversion programs I don't know what you mean, I just upload the pictures to brickshelf and then deeplink them to here. Totally confused. My Brickshelf folder hasn't been made public yet, I am waiting for admins' approval
