True. Typically with the action figures the legs and arms which are slightly flexible and made of some form of PVC are yellow whereas the torsos made of ABS are not found yellowed as often. I think the real trick, since degradation cannot be stopped but only slowed is to balance prevention with ability to display, enjoyment, etc. You might be right about normal household lighting but I think could also depend on how close it is. Personally I wouldn't risk using florescent or halogen bulbs as display lighting. Maybe but that is only one particular type of degradation. It's possible you end up trading one for another. Which is worse? IDK.

When I stored my action figures for a number of years between moving out of my parent's house and into my own I kept them in acid free archival plastic baggies ( cannot remember where I got them) and used a hole punch to punch holes in the bottom for air flow. The real valuable and old ones I wrapped in acid free tissue paper before putting them in the baggies. They came out in the same condition they went in but YMMV. Kept in cardboard shoe boxes (not tapes shut for airflow) in climate controlled closet. FWIW it is worth most of this is conjecture on the action figure forums. While there is a lot of anecdotal evidence to back it up along with some science there have been no scientific studies to my knowledge. So nothing concrete to back up the potential (however unlikely) nonsense I'm spouting.

http://www.mnhs.org/preserve/conservation/connectingmn/docs_pdfs/repurposedbook-plasticsandmodernmaterials_000.pdf Keep in mind I'm not a chemist but come from years of collecting vintage action figures and spending time on related forums. The topic comes up frequently because white figures often turn yellow. Even though they were MIB and kept in dark conditions. Plastic offgases and one theory is that high humidity keeps the "gases" from escaping from the figures contributing to degradation. The same way sealing in a plastic bag would. Also just because something is impermeable to moisturize/ doesn't appear to be affected by it doesn't mean moisture can't do damage. I.e. rust. Like I said not a chemist but there could be some chemical reaction that occurs. Define "very high temperature." Attics in my part of the U.S. can get to 120F+(50C+) during the summer and that can certainly degrade plastic (ask me how I know). I'm sure lesser temps could also degrade plastic. ( I only have anecdotal evidence that they can) Although, I think the better term would be accelerate degradation. Edit: to get the link to work you may need to copy past it directly into your browser

Fluorescent bulbs are the worst UV emitters. I wouldn't use them in any collection room with stuff sensitive to UV. Both LED and incandescent emit some UV. But as MAB said LEDs don't have the heat of incandescents. Honestly I wouldn't worry about it with LEDs. Is there a window in the room? Is it permanently blacked out? What about humidity levels? Temp levels in the house? The worst things for plastic are heat, humidity, and UV. I don't think the ABS Lego is made of has the same issues as the PVC used in some older action figures but those can become sticky in high humidity situations. My point is plastic is going to degrade over time. Some quicker than others depending on composition, storage conditions, etc. I don't think some additional UV from an LED is going to make any difference under normal display circumstances unless you are going for storage in perfect conditions. Edit: I believe halogens also emit significant UV and heat so I'd steer clear.

Lego purchase limits reset
MasterTyvokka replied to MasterTyvokka's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Lego has the power quite easily. They own the rights to their product. They can require just about anything of a retailer. It would be in whatever contract between Lego and the retailer. It wouldn't surprise me if they did require the retailers keep to limits. It is also possible the limits I ran into were solely Amazons and yes, I don't see them sharing purchase data with other if for no other reason than its proprietary. I could probably buy from S@H without issues but until they having something else I want in stock I don't want to pay the additional shipping. Fortunately I may have a rare chance to hit up a Lego store in a few weeks. Nearest one is 6 hours round trip from me. -
Lego purchase limits reset
MasterTyvokka replied to MasterTyvokka's topic in General LEGO Discussion
True, but I guess it is like when Target, Walmart, and the international equivalents distribute Lego. So by allowing Amazon to be a distributor that removes some of the competition aspect. It seems strict enforcement of purchase limits is part of the distribution agreement. -
Looking for minecraft like block game.
MasterTyvokka replied to metalgeekzy's topic in General LEGO Discussion
How about a Lego texture pack for Minecraft? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pcgamer.com/amp/this-texture-pack-turns-minecraft-blocks-into-lego-bricks/ Not used it but played a lot of mindcraft and it's sounds like you just want Minecraft that looks like you are building with Lego. Not sure you'll find better than that. -

Shipped from and sold by Amazon so don't know about address but if you visit the Lego Store on Amazon it looks official. Their red and white logo ( I know they are very serious about that logo) and everything. Can post a link if that's allowed. Almost certainly official. Plus I can't imagine a third party seller enforcing a limit that strictly. -
Lego purchase limits reset
MasterTyvokka replied to MasterTyvokka's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Apparently they are. I was able to get the master builder series cantina there as well even though it's out of stock on S@H. No VIP points though. I suspect they have done the math and decided it's to their benefit to compete against their own site. I agree. Completely understand the reasoning behind the limits but some things could have higher limits. Worse comes to worse I may have opportunity to hit up a Lego store in a few weeks or can have a relative order it for me on their account. -
Lego purchase limits reset
MasterTyvokka replied to MasterTyvokka's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Sorry for the double post but thought I'd provide an update for posterity. When I tried to order one more I could add it to my cart but it was automatically removed when trying to check out. About a week since purchase delivery was a couple days ago. It's clearly being tracked. I could still purchase from others sellers if I wanted to. I'm not going to try from S@H right now because it's more expensive and no free shipping. -
Lego purchase limits reset
MasterTyvokka replied to MasterTyvokka's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I asked because it's the official Lego store on Amazon. It wouldn't surprise me if they had a way of monitor it. I guess worse comes to worse it will just get cancelled. -
Anyone know if/when the Lego purchase limit resets and if they keep track of purchases between the Amazon store and S@H? I purchased the limit of 3 of the classic gray 48x48 stud base plates and need a 4th for a MOC. Maybe one more purchase of one won't cause a cancellation of the order?

Picked up the Forge set. Set is not bad, really but the main reason I picked it up was for the Armorer and I didn't have a Din Djarin figure yet.

Wishlist: Future Star Wars Sets and Minifigures
MasterTyvokka replied to MKJoshA's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Personally I'd love to see more use of the alien heads, many of which are not cheap on bricklink. Even if those heads don't relate to specific characters. I know the chances of that are almost nil. AFOL (like me) could use them for MOCs and stuff and kids could use them to play out various scenes in the SW universe. They could have market stalls with accompanying accessories. -
Quite new to MOCing myself. I've been on a bit of a hiatus but have gotten back into things. I don't like using the CAD programs because I spend all of my work day on a computer and use Lego as a break from the screen. I have found the best way for me is to sit down with a basic idea of what I want to do and a very basic idea of how I want to do it and start building. I am currently working on a creature from Star Wars. I have discovered the more organic shape of the creature is far more difficult than buildings. Anyways I have found that I had one idea of how I was going to build it and that has changed several times once I started putting parts together. This creature will go in a building eventually and I plan to do the same with that. Take my basic idea and just start building. So I think you aren't far off. Just start building your walls and ceiling, etc, like you said, and go from there. When you get to the detailing I think its really a matter of putting pieces together and see if they accomplish what you are going for. If not try something different.

The Empire's crumbling and you would think that made it easier for Smugglers to do their work. But it is almost as if the Empire turned a blind eye to smuggling and other criminal activites as long as they suited its purpose; no qualms there. In hindsight it makes sense, I just wish I had taken full advantage of it at the time. The chaos and power vacuum of a fallen order is supposed to make my job easier. But without the Empire's control many systems and planets have cracked down. Well, as the saying goes, if you can't beat em' join em'. CorSec here I come. Probably not the first smuggler to join CorSec and continue with my preferred life style at the same time and definitely won't be the last, we're Corellians after all. Cen Tev'rune is a Corellian Smuggler who has recently joined Corsec. Given his past experience he has been able to get assignments working undercover which have allowed to, at least for the time being, satisfy his bosses and keep at his preferred profession at the same time.

Thanks both of you. That was all very helpful. I like the idea of selecting a set number of each piece and color to keep "out." I have definitively reconsidered selling the rest and I will just box it up and store it, just in case.

My experience is limited but I just went through this. I did it by putting the Lego in a large fine mesh bag and filling up the bathtub with some dish soap. I let them soak a while and then shook the bag a bunch in the tub to agitate them. I used the shower to rinse them and then after letting the water drain from the bag spread them out on the floor in the spare bedroom and put a fan on so they could dry. Worked pretty well for all but the few really dirty pieces. I soaked those in a sink with dish soap and used a tooth brush to clean them. Lego with stickers I just wiped with a damp rag.

Does humidity hurt Lego bricks in the long run?
MasterTyvokka replied to ks6349's topic in General LEGO Discussion
A bit of a disclaimer before I continue. I am not an expert in plastics but I come from the action figure collecting world and in particular the Star Wars figures from the 70s and 80s, so my knowledge comes from that experience. There are a number of things that can cause degradation in plastics: temperature, exposure to UV, and yes, humidity. Those are the big three. But sealing your Legos inside an air tight container is not a perfect solution either because plastics off gas, even old plastics. This off gassing can potentially cause degradation as well. The ideal situation is to have everything displayed in room that has the windows blacked out and is climate controlled that way everything can breathe and there is limited UV exposure. Obviously this isn't practical for everyone. When I stored my action figures for a time I used acid free bags (ideally any storage device you use, that is directly touching the Legos, should be acid free) with holes punched in them and then kept them plastic bins with some drilled holes. I am not as concerned about my Legos as my SW action figures. The thing is though, even under perfect conditions, plastic will still degrade. Different types of plastics will degrade at different rates (ABS seems to degrade slower than some of the PVC based plastic used in action figures) and you could even have two seemingly identical ABS Lego pieces kept under the same conditions degrade at different rates. Also, I think ABS is less susceptible to the off gassing issues than PVC based on personal experience with my action figures. The PVC parts can get a sticky and I haven't noticed that to quite the same degree with ABS. -
So, I bought around 80lbs. a while back an I have begun sorting it. It is a very tedious task and I am not sure once all is said and done storage solution wise, that I will have the room to store it all completely sorted. I am considering reselling some of it in bulk. That will save me some sorting time and space. My only concern is that after I've sold some I may wish I hadn't. My questions is what do y'all find yourselves using the most when building mocs as far as pieces, sizes, and colors go when building Star Wars MOCs or participating in factions (for those that do)? For me MOCs would mostly be on the smaller side, (unless I am building someone else's design but I might purchase as lots from Bricklink at that point.) or I would be using them for mock ups for my own designs.

A couple of weeks ago I bought about 80 lbs. of Legos off of goodwill. I have begun sorting them (incredibly tedious) and I am trying to figure out the best storage solutions. I am organizing them by part, mostly. What I am trying to figure out is the best containers to buy. I've got 10 6 quart containers and 1 Akro Mills like set of drawers. The drawers will do for smaller stuff but I am realizing that they really aren't big enough for all the flats I have. These might work https://www.amazon.com/STERILITE-Organizer-Mini-Drawer-Pack/dp/B014E30YX6 but I am guessing there are some types of pieces that I will need something smaller for. Maybe a combination of Akro Mills style drawers and the above? Any suggestions? The other thing I am considering is whether I need all of these pieces or could sell some. I will be mostly using them for mocs, either creating mock ups so I can then by the exact pieces on Bricklink or smaller mocs.

ISD Aggressor (Star Destroyer MOC w interior and instructions)
MasterTyvokka replied to Raskolnikov's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Unfortunately that still didn't solve the issue but it may be an issue with Bricklink becasue I was also getting an error when trying to do the auto buy to see the cost. I'll try it again when I am sure Bricklink has fixed its issue. Thanks for working up that spreadsheet btw! It is really helpful for someone like me who has only built large legos as sets and not gone through the process of buying on bricklink and all. -
ISD Aggressor (Star Destroyer MOC w interior and instructions)
MasterTyvokka replied to Raskolnikov's topic in LEGO Star Wars
So, I may have an issue, at least I hope not. So I pulled the the spread sheet, followed the instructions for doing it by book and went through the process of purchasing the parts for the first two books. The issue arose when I went to see how much the next two books will cost me down the road. I used the spread sheet to do the same as I did for the first two books for books three and four. Following the instructions for uploading the wanted list. But it is the same list from books 1-2. So I think something is wrong with the spread sheet but I am not sure what, how to see what is wrong, or how to fix it. Is is not that big a deal right now, assuming I did in fact buy the parts for 1-2 (pretty sure since the number of parts adds up) since it will be a little while before I get to the other books. But it will of course become an issue down the road. Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks! -
Using Bricklink for large Bulk Orders
MasterTyvokka replied to MasterTyvokka's topic in General LEGO Discussion
That's very helpful thank you! Unfortunately bricks and pieces isn't available right now so I'll have to go through Bricklink. Love the Thunderbirds Lego, btw!
