Getting started in LEGO Trains - What to buy?
slovakiasteph replied to MrTools's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I'm getting my first train tomorrow, and I'm super-excited! Even though I like the passenger train better, I'm hoping to get the yellow cargo train because I have coupons, etc... just makes more sense at the moment. Already got the road crossing at TRU on Monday. It's sitting there, waiting for the train! Do you know what I need in terms of batteries? Haven't taken the time to look that up yet... Have fun!- 191 replies

I tried to save the photos to Brickshelf, but they were denied/not uploaded. My problem is I don't have links for them anymore (and can't re-find them on google) because I'd saved them to my folder. Guess I'll keep looking for other ways... thanks for the help!

Thanks! Maybe it was the woman who took the sign! I know how to copy photos from Brickshelf, but I can only upload pics there that are of LEGO. So, I'm not sure how to post non-LEGO photos...

B-RV-12C I did promise some country-type homes, did I not? Picture this on the edge of the mountains... A view of the front garden, complete with grille and outdoor table set... although the garden is starting to be overgrown by the pine tree! Indoors, we have a fold-out couch (like a futon?) on the main floor, with table and chairs. In the basement you'll see the washing machine and a few storage containers. Finally, upstairs there's a lounge chair and small bed under the eaves. I was going to share my inspiration photo for this, but I don't know how/where to host pictures that aren't LEGO specifically. Not sure how to get flickr photos to work on here either... ETA... I think I got it to work!

That gumball machine is pretty sweet! Will it go in your diner? Am I allowed to say... Brick on, 'lightningtiger!'

WWII time period? That's when that poster was used, right? I can't comment on the authenticity as I've never been to London, but I like the clean lines of the build. The upside-down fences are a nice touch.

Ahoj...! You have to have made ten posts in order to PM someone, so I'm assuming it's the same with viewing profiles?

Now I know what my town needs... I was just thinking of a LEGO cemetery the other day. Nice work!

Thanks a lot, everyone! I had a lot of fun with this build and am thinking I might try to build Oravsky hrad next. Or maybe Krasna Horka... that's my favorite castle I've visited. I just realized that all Slovak castles seem to be tan, not grey... I think I'm about out of tan bricks, though! I agree with the sand red... don't think TLG makes it in that color, though. think my choices for cheese are limited to dark blue, although I might have some dark green?
-
I just did the dark red roof because that's what the original castle has... not all of it built at the same time, I guess. I didn't want there to be too much sand green, either. But maybe dark blue would be a better fit all around if I wanted something different?

I was up for a challenge so decided to enter Classic Castle's mini castle contest. This is the first time I've ever built in microscale or built a castle, and it was fun... and quite a departure from my usual City buildings. My favorite view In this one you can see the entrance and garden with a fountain. Another view, this time with the river running past. The rather boring back, but you can see the river again. It's inspired by Slovakia's Bojnice Castle, although I departed from that on a few sides because I wanted more courtyard space. I might mod it to make it closer to the castle... that's if I want to display it, and I'm thinking I might because I've fallen in love with it. Any suggestions for further mods?

I like the way you've done the canopy over the walk. The colors are also great! I always seem to notice the little things, too, when I'm going through my pictures... never when I'm taking them or doing the building, of course!

B-OV-20B Time for some ice cream! The bank is in the lower level of the building (the person on the right handles the exchanges... whoops, should've put her behind a glass screen), with the ice cream and sweet shop upstairs. The attic just holds a bunch of junk. This is what happens, unfortunately, when the ice cream is upstairs... Better not let your kids carry their own ice cream down the stairs. I'll try to get a full-town shot... the only place I have enough room for these is on the window ledge in my room, so it's nothing glamorous. No streets, sidewalks, or anything... just a row of buildings. So don't get your hopes up...

B-RV-12B A little blue house... many Slovak houses along the road don't have the door facing the street, so this one attempts to show that. A picture of the garden with a footpath winding through: I think I need to scrounge up a few more flowers to add. From the inside... I'm running out of bricks with side studs... can you tell? We have a couch, chair, houseplant, and shelving unit with pottery. Thanks for reading! ETA: my inspiration photo:

Yay for 4438! Saved this line for me! I like it, and I'd remembered hearing something about a crook's hideout earlier... was disappointed when I didn't see one. Plus, a cheaper way to get a bear!

weirdest place you've found random LEGO?

Was it still there on Monday? That's an interesting place to find a LEGO part... -
I might get in a street shot at one point or another... I don't have sidewalks or streets or anything, though, so I think that might defeat the purpose? When I finish, at any rate, I'll take pictures of everything together. I made a teardrop trailer a while ago and use another to pull one of the LEGO campers. I do have a campground in the works.

V-LV-53B We interrupt our usually scheduled line of buildings to take a look at the vehicle situation in our town... Apparently we have some sort of a copycat issue going on here. Or maybe there was a sale on small cars. Well, the cars in Slovakia are typically smaller than American ones (what's a SUV?), so these are pretty accurate. I just loved the design of the small car so much, I couldn't help myself. I think I'll put a dark grey or black roof and change the slope color on the red one, though, as that's just too much red.

What is the orange building? If you've shown us that in detail before, I don't remember it. Also, are you planning to include those street accessories you made in LDD here?

I got my first PAB cup last week! It was fun... and I was excited that they had some tiles (1x4 brown, 1x2 lime) and smaller pieces (round 1x1 orange and trans red). A general question: how often does the stock on the PAB wall change? I realize it will vary by store, but if I went back say two weeks after my last visit, would you expect much to have changed? I go to the Indianapolis store, which I imagine is not as well traveled as some.

"closet" AFOLs, lol! That's a nice find! -
Oh, good idea! I can do blackboards, at least! (not sure if there's room for shelves?) I might have to put them in the back of the room, though...

B-OV-20A Every town has to have a school, right? I wanted it to look like the school where I teach in the summers:My link It has a lime green bottom floor and yellow second story: they just re-did it in 2010, with new paint and roof! Mine is probably a little long for LEGO scale, but still pretty short when compared to the original! I thought about putting in only two windows per side, but that wouldn't have looked right. It's clearly a holiday as no one is there. Well, what do you expect when LEGO kids can't sit down? The bottom right is the school cafeteria. I don't know if it's common everywhere, but in our school (Zakladna skola on Vajanskeho in Lucenec), there are so many flowers and plants in the hallways!
