Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
swisstony replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
For all those who say Police Station, there are others who hope it isn't ..namely those who have done MOC's. I can think of quite a few but Bricky Brick is one with his lovely interpretation police station by Chris Dodsworth, on Flickr and then ours that we did last year ( or was it the year before, I can't remember :) ) I know that Lego would do a far better job than us but we don't need two on our street ! So here's hoping its a garage/recording studio/apartment IMG_0312 by Chris Dodsworth, on Flickr -

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

WE both think this is FAKE. Couple of reasons, the packaging at the bottom shows the townhall way too small compared to the other buildings. I know they may play around with the proportions to allow it to be displayed in a strip but even then it is way out against the pet shop. Second the facade on AS looks all wrong . The studs or jumpers are too pronounced compared to what Lego use. IMG_4982 by Chris Dodsworth, on Flickr -

Thanks for the mention on the possible police station Now whilst we would love to see Lego release the next modular as a Police station as ultimately they would do such a great job of it, better than ours, we feel it should be something else , maybe a hospital or bookstore/apartments maybe. It also means that we get to keep our MOC on our street as a unique one, selfish I know but what the hell :) Fingers crossed they tell us soon as in our house the excitement level has just ramped up a notch of late. First the news of the release of Taj Mahal and now the next modular. Cmon Lego, tell us !!! -

your wish is my command :) https://ideas.lego.com/projects/173323 -
Like many people I am sure, we struggled with how to display the Skyline sets but after seeing a post on Brother Brick I had to try this out. Just grab some Ikea Frames http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/search/?k=KASSEBY display box and with some careful modding on three of the sets you can just squeeze them in. Double sided tape, some careful measuring and voila, a mini art gallery for the sets. Bonus is no dusting !! :)

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

It all depends on a) are you intending to collect them all at some point or b) just collecting the ones you think look nice/can afford. If it is a) then go for the oldest one that is available before it retires so that would be DO , if it is b) then AS would look great next to PR. Just my opinion :) -
Man sooooo much want !! We are big fans of two things here, our nespresso coffee machine and Lego and you have managed to combine both of them in this one modular . From the outside you have created some stunning window details and I think the overall structure is genius all the way up to the top. The roof is lovely as well and carefully planned out and then you have excelled yourself on the details on the inside. Even all the way down to the way the display the nespresso pods and boxes. Love it !!

ah I see what you mean .. we wanted it to fit into the street so hence the 32x32 and also pass scrutiny for Lego Ideas so hence making it that size. But I like the idea of the extra 16 plate , could have a lot of fun with that plan :)

Glad you like the changes we have made from the original concept. We also agree that Lego need a Police station in the lineup as currently the mini figures are running amok in the street without a care in the world and although they have a detective onsite, he is far too busy tracking down cheating husbands :) And the poor fire brigade have their work cut out rescuing cats stuck up in trees and putting out fires. So we need some proper laws and order .. it seems we are not alone in thinking this as there have been quite a few Police stations come along in the last few months so we are on to something ! We would have liked to put space for parking etc but to be honest the 32x32 base is so tight and we would have had to make it huge ( 2 plates) to accommodate that ..see Dakar A on how he did his http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/149518-moc-police-headquarters/ or lose some of the interior details and rooms. Its a tough choice but I see your point. Thanks for the comments though, always appreciated.

Brilliant design and perfect exterior. The way you have captured the exterior details is superb and the inside with all the little quirks and features is just as impressive. I noted your comment on our build of a Police station where you said you were in the middle of creating something similar and I can see why now ! I also see your comment on us squeezing it all into one 32x32 was good and why you have used two base plates as yours is huge !! It must weigh something with all those bricks. I do love the windows and the columns and how it looks great from any angle, something not easy to pull off but you have managed it so well played sir

HI everyone and as promised after staring at the Police station for many weeks, I realised many of your comments ( especially the ones listed above) made sense. And so armed with LDD, I made a few major changes to the three floors, mostly concentrating on the following : 1. The middle floor did not flow with the other two floors especially the windows. 2. The building did not sit flush with the other modulars in terms of technic bricks and pins 3. Top floor needed to include sand blue on the tiles 4. Mixture of brick and window styles So here is middle floor BEFORE and AFTER ( saves having to flick backwards and forwards) BEFORE AFTER Top floor has been cleaned up and Sand blue added. BEFORE AFTER You will notice we have lost the guns as they just didn't work and added in sand blue columns to match the other two floors . Also expanded the windows from two to three to give more light and match the middle floor . Ground floor has only been tweaked to include the half pin technic to fill up the P in the Police sign and also add in sand blue instead of white. BEFORE AFTER We have also moved the entire ground floor back two studs to make it line up with the other modulars. God that was a pain !! The whole raised floor was under pinned so that all had to be moved and the pavement altered but we agree it looks better now. And finally all three floors together . BEFORE AFTER We hope you like the alterations we have made, any other suggestions are welcome. Thank you !

as per your idea , nice one
-
some fantastic colours , they really just POP out and the details are great ...love it !
-
You are more than welcome... as you can see I have the other version but with the smaller drawers but unless you have tiny parts ( fnaaar fnaar) the bins soon fill up. Unlike our US brothers and sisters who can get those Akro-mills for cents, us brits have to either pay top dollar or make do with the inferior stuff.

Ha ha, dont panic you are spot on with the Fast Show guesss yes its me SwissTony and I love the reference ! It would have been funnier though if I had been some random bloke called Tony who lived is Geneva and took utter offence at your comments. damn :) Ok bins are Draper ones from Amazon. I searched for ages for these are the bins are the right size for the amount we have. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01F3NFZEO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 enjoy ! Swiss

that is a great idea.....will try that when I get home tonight , top man !

Well thank you ALL for all the great comments and constructive criticism , all good in our book ! We have taken onboard many suggestions from you seasoned MOC builders , in particular we have concentrated on the flow of the building in terms of complimenting floors and blockwork. We also noticed that many of the comments were about how the second floor ( or the floor above the ground) looked out of place and whilst I was keen to use the new window technique I had learned from Kristel I do agree that floor looks slightly out of place with the other two. So with that in mind we have been redesigning it...the extra bricks are on order and should be with us soon and then begins a bit of painful deconstruction and rebuild. Will update this post when it is complete and then you guys can have another shot at your opinions :) Stay tuned !!!
-
Funnily enough I actually got in touch with Kristel a few weeks ago to ask her about the windows as I was going to use her building for inspiration. I also mentioned that fact in my description at the top (though I spelt her name wrong.whoops) So a nod has been given hopefully where appropriate Hello squire. Now coming from you that makes a great comment indeed as we are big fans of your work. In fact my wife is the one that has been emailing you about the Fish Shop and purchased the plans from you a few weeks ago. That is now complete and she will send photos soon :) I will make sure she sees your comment though as she looooooooves your designs !!

superb ! Love the different features you have managed to squeeze into one piece but at the same time make it unique as different buildings. Some great design cue from the brick bank etc love it !!

We, like so many people on here, started storing our Lego in the same way, all in storage bins in Colour. Then as our collection of bricks expanded as we bought used sets to break apart on Ebay , bought now bricks on PAB online and BL, BO, we found that colour sorting was not the way to go. So over the last month we have now sorted them by brick kind or element. So in this photo you see everything that is either too big to fit in the small bins, plates etc or we have too many of like 1x2, 1x4 bricks and so on. Then for the smaller elements like tiles, mini fig stuff, we grabbed several storage bins and used them. Had to label them as it was just getting too confusing ! We even have a section for Dirty Lego ! Stuff that needs a good clean or is too discoloured to use but can be useful for testing purposes or unseen bricks like foundations and under floor. Now we just need to find a suitable cupboard to hide it all away :)

Thought I would revisit these two comments as you both mentioned the Police station and well we did it ! all here , hope you approve :)

Ha ha, yes indeed it is our first ever MOC. That is praise indeed but it truly is our first. We took about a month from design to finish to get it to a point that we liked and fussed and fussed over every little detail. Along the way we tried to emulate the great designers from TLG but the fun part was making a modular that we would like them to build as an official set but also bring some little details that we personally like. My wife has great taste for interiors so I let her design that whilst I got to grips with LDD . We have built other MOC's from other designers but we felt it time to try doing our own. wow, thanks for that comment, makes all the hard work worth it :) Well my wife is the interiors person so she gets the credit for those. She does like my input but usually her decision wins out at the end of the day ! :) Cheers for the comment. it seems many people don't believe this is our first MOC :) I hear you about the blue stripe. I tried to mix up the colour palette on the floors to make it more interesting but not use too many different styles . I might try tweaking the brick usage as people have pointed out the 1x2 drive bricks in MSG need changing so they may turn sand blue or white. The trouble that I found is that LDD lets you use bricks that are sometimes not available in the colour or very expensive so I then have to redesign them in cheaper alternatives. but all fun and part of the learning process Top comment and thanks. I did notice that when we placed it against the other modulars. It stands proud from them but we can always change it. Brick on indeed ! Yes the police station was always something we felt was missing from the street. Knowing our luck TLG will introduce one later down the line and do it far better LOL. I might submit it to the lego ideas forum just to gee them up a bit :) The comments are spot on though. I tried to mix up interesting architecture with each floor but keep the colour palette down at the same time. So later on I think I will take on board what you said and maybe echo the sand blue bricks on the top floor to match the other two floors. The top floor has its inspiration from the Fire station , hence the hat with guns and also the brick work is based on that. But thank you for the comments, it makes us happy you like the MOC .. It started out a project where my wife always wanted a police station to go with her street collection so I said I would design one in LDD for her and then evolved into us doing it as a shared project . like all good marriages I would show her what I had designed and then she would change loads of it :) but in the end I think we reached a point where we BOTH liked it. so all good I think. You mean the sand blue tiles on the outside ? yes I think they need changing to match the first two floors. totally agree and will post up the changes when we do that. Thank you very much. We have loved reading all the comments so far almost as much as we loved doing the MOC. If it was up to my wife she would have built it and never shared it online but I thought it was up to an acceptable level to show it on here and on other forums. It also gave you lot the opportunity to point out some tweaks that we could do as I am sure not everyone gets it right first time. To share a little insight into how we chose certain elements or designed it a certain way, we took inspiration from a variety of sources but ones that were in keeping with our vision. So for instance the Police sign was taken from SteBrick and his police MOC. However we discovered that his Police sign falls out if you tip the building so we didn't like that. So painfully we learned how to fix the letters and tiles to a bar all clipped in sequence, a little like the Pet Shop does it. Then we had to work out how to cover the back as I didn't want it to be exposed so it took ages but worth it. The front light on the pavement is inspired by an old Police station in London that I know. So we tried to recreate it from here You will also see in the background another building that we liked the brickwork The same police station in London has a great entrance so we used that for the pillars and railings The lift ( or elevator) was inspired by Lego Town Hall. The reason is because normal stairs in MOCs we found take up too much internal space and on a building that has 3 floors we needed to find a way that maximised floor space but still allowed access ( as long as you know the code for the key pad entry :) ) Then we decided a bit of humour was needed to offset such a serious like building. So the donuts in the kitchen were a Must have feature , the Chief inspector on the top floor being allowed to bring his dog into work as he is the boss !, the criminal with his solicitor on the ground floor being interrogated and so on. So there you have it , a lot of fun and your comments from everyone certainly make it worthwhile and we are busy planning our next project !

**** THIS IS OUR FIRST EVER MOC SO PLEASE BE GENTLE WITH US ! ***** I know that many people have created police station modulars but we felt that we could do our own from start to finish. Now as this was our first ever MOC, we wanted to keep it simple but as always as it was being created, it kind of expanded ! But all along we wanted to do the following : 1. Create a modular that would fit into the street and not look out of place 2. Be a certain height but no higher than Town Hall 3. Be architectularly interesting 4. Be fully furnished. 5. Learn different building techniques and LDD. Never used it before ! So with that in mind and armed with a copy of LDD, a load of bricks and some imagination we started. My wife is great at the interiors so I was tasked with the build of the exterior and with her input we developed it over the last month or so. Did level by level , got our build list, ordered all the bricks that we didn't have and then started to construct. It has been immensely fun as along the way, we have discovered that LDD creates crazy instructions, it allows bricks that you sometimes can't get and some parts looked great on the computer but rubbish in real life so had to be changed ! And that was even before we got to the interior which proved another challenge as sometimes furniture didn't fit so it was back to the drawing board. Hopefully it has turned out ok, we both hope that people like the design and although we are novices, we think we have created something a little unique. For those of you who know your modulars, you will notice that we have given a 'nod' to many existing modulars, both official and other MOC's. The eagle eyed amongst you will notice a little homage or design cues from Town Hall, Krystel buildings , Fire Station etc. Apologies for the amount of photos .... The part list is around 3600 pieces including the interior /fit out. Enjoy !!
