Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
jonahtron replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Don't know if this interview with Jamie was missed from last month but it has a whole load of photos of Anderson's WIP Jazz club designs. Whilst I do wish we'd gotten a huge sax sign, I think the final version of the JC was the best iteration. I love the facade of the yellow building in some of his sketches, and am glad he didn't go with sand green. https://brickarchitect.com/2023/interview-backstage-tour-of-10312-jazz-club-with-jamie-berard/ upload free image -

I used the chrome gold trumpet 71342. It’s what’s pictured in the poster on the front of the JC. It does stand out against the pearl gold sax etc but I’m sure ‘head cannon’ can find a solution! Oh its 100% Andy Sax in assembly Square. Same hairpiece, same classic smiley, same shirt collar etc. With luck there may be more music based figures and accessories coming down the line like the formerly Vidiyo cello/double bass that was meant for series 3 of that line. -

I respectfully couldn't disagree more with this. As a Jazz fan who regularly goes to gigs and makes travel plans around jazz bars when I travel abroad I am confident that one would struggle to find any example of this in the 'real world'. Neon signs that attach to a mounting (i.e not freestanding or mounted to a brick wall) are generally either black or mirrored or transparent perspex. And in the examples below of some of my favourites, all match the colour scheme of the building. In London we have the famous Ronnie Scott's, Jazz @ Pizza Express in Paris; Le Caveau de la Huchette, In Detroit; Bakers Keyboard Lounge, in Chicago; Green Mill Cocktail Lounge -

Here you go, I'm not sure if this is what you meant. It looks a bit like a converted police station to me. -

Totally! when I first saw the leaks I thought that the sign was the problem, the issue that the bottom fascia of the club ought to be dark blue. Luckily it's not more than a handful of pieces! Meanwhile, my alterations for the restaurant are coming together, here's my WIP... I can't quite get the colonnade with balcony looking aesthetically pleasing yet Any thoughts appreciated... Other changes are not too substantial, ; added an extra floor, (which immediately improved the silhouette) Made the roof more 'Tuscan' looking. Green shutters which are a must on many of this style of building- i'm not entirely satisfied with my solution at the moment. Added Grape vines, though I need to make these a bit more organic looking IMO. As you can tell, i've not shied away from the fact that this restaurant is Friends-style. It's an exact colour match for 41379. (I'll probably use the sticker sign from that set and call this restaurant "La Locanda" -

I totally agree, The sign being dark blue makes no sense with the rest of the palette, makes you think that perhaps this printed tile piece went into production before they switched the colours. If they had just made the tile black in the first place, it would have been more seemless with the rest of the palette regardless. Ah well, I do love the building at the end of the day, I just wish it could have been a bit less 'safe', and had some more interesting build techniques. The aspect of the hobby I enjoy the most is modding official designs, I don't have a modular that I've not spend the extra £££ on to modify. It makes it a lot more fun when the original building has some design flare rather than being as simple as the JC, but I've had fun with the interior in making room for the piano/ trumpet player etc. On a positive note, as we speak, the 2024 modular is already being finished up, and the design team will likely be aware of the many mixed reviews the JC has received and hopefully it'll take some bigger risks despite not being a corner plot. The 'icons' design team are well aware of the often requested business' like post-office/ Hospital etc and they did give us the PS in the end, so perhaps there's some momentum to give the fans what they want rather than slightly less requested things like a pointlessly tiny bookshop with no books... -

Hi pals, In case people were pondering dark blue as the facade to match the signage... I think it looks nice in blue, perhaps mores than black which is the direction I went in. -

They aren’t, but I would tend to tile all interiors anyway. One could use a mix of red tiles and plates if you still wanted that colour I guess. -

A silly diversion for a moment… What day of the week is it on modular street? Hear me out: If everything is happening concurrently along the 17 buildings, (according to Jamie, so I guess that’s lore) and we know that Andy Sax is NOT playing at the jazz club tonight, then it’s not Friday night, as that’s when he is due to play. The dentists office is open so it’s probably not the weekend, and I’d double down on it not being a Sunday as the tiny independent bookshop and pet store isn’t likely to open on a Sunday. The bank certainly wouldn’t open at the weekend. Any other clues along the street? Time of year? Most trees are green, and full with the exception of the beech, so I would argue that we are early autumn or late summer. Especially as the Andy sax poster says he’s due to play on the 12th October. Never the 10th of December as some were convinced of.(Lego use the European date system). unless the street is now SO long that it has its own microclimate.😂 -

They look great on the black base, amazing that you had so much black and grey to make them look consistent and clean. Great use of the Tardis and Delorean. Would you be tempted to use some trans orange energy fire pieces coming out the back for the flame trails? I think you are right about these being cheaper from PAB rather than BL, so long as you are buying enough from Lego to get free shipping. They are not a bestseller part though so in the UK not currently listed on the PAB. I hope the full pan selection comes back online soon. -

I thoroughly recommend this part, it’s been expensive but hugely worthwhile transitioning all my Modular’s and MOCS to this system. The black base gives them all a nice ‘framed’ aesthetic and, if like me your builds are on high shelves you can you can pick a heavy modular up with two fingers and know it’ll be solid as a rock. I know some people MILS to hide lighting system wires, I’ve not done that myself and I discovered this approach when moving house, or just rearranging the street and wanting a reliable way to handle buildings without the 😰 I doubt I’m the first one to come up with this, but I’ve not seen this online anywhere else so far. I call it ‘fast food mils’ 😉 I use a couple of technic pins to connect them together and then just pop the grid of 2 or 4 onto an old-school base plate and bobs your uncle! I honestly think that it’s (possibly) cheaper and more convenient than the traditional brick and plate MILS approach. It’s certainly faster, takes about 15 seconds and just looks consistent and clean. -

Yeah, a bit tricky, possibly best to buy a second one if one wanted to have a symmetrical frontage. I think looking for asymmetry may produce something more interesting. id like to see your mod once done. In the meantime, just managed to fit in a small bar and a fuller band, with… trumpet player. tiny image host excuse the crappy pics, it’s hard getting a phone inside! -

Thanks very much! That sticker is great, didn't notice that when it came out. The more I stare at it the mod in person the more I think that perhaps I ought to try bringing in some of the stained glass look from the upper floors to tie both together. Something like this orientation possibly. I have lots of these printed glass pieces so it might be a good place for them... -

Hi pals, Just thought I’d share the WIP of my Jazz Club. Its a bit sketchy in places, as I don’t have quite the right pieces in my inventory, but the extra space on the left and right now allows me to make a bigger stage to include a piano, and around the corner of the under the stairs toilet will be a cocktail bar. I wouldn’t ordinarily have just one business per 32 plate, but wanted to find a home for a a few more ideas on the ground floor... suggestions for the large window pane areas welcomed, it’s a bit boring right now. P.S as an fyi, I have my own version of a mils which is to use x4 of the new 16x—16 technic brick which are usually used in the art sets. Makes my building indestructible! -

Went into store and picked it up today. So far, there are a few clever techniques, the double bass carrier is a lovely SNOT build. I'm building my jazz club centrally on the baseplate and the pizza place separately which is a headache but will be worth it in the end! Got the Blacktron Cruiser and the CNY accessory set. Not really interested in the Blacktron, so not sure what to do with it just yet. -

There is a newly announced GWP of a new line of mini modulars, first one is a latin American house. I think the purchase threshold is £200 GBP. Perhaps the Pizza Van was a bum steer, it WOULD kind of make sense for the GWP's released around the same time as modulars to be mini mods. I'll be pleasantly surprised by a pizza van if it surfaces. -

I did play around with dark blue and I think that you are right, it works better. I think on reflection I'll to aim replicate the central window design for the staggered sides but without the wheel arch, and turn the ground floor windows into doorframes for posters. I think you are right about simplifying the rooflines on the extensions too. Haven't decided whether to replace the sign yet, but if I do it because I light my modulars and I'll be aiming to create more of an LED/Neon effect sign. https://ibb.co/f1f3vxK -

Love these thoughts, I really want to lean into the 'Ronnie Scotts/ Harlem Jazz Club' vibe so.. Here are my plans. Street: Swap the tiles at the doorway with some pearl gold Pizzeria: Bye bye. its the wrong yellow for a Mediterranean stucco building, the yellow should be something along the lines of bright light orange, the pillars would make more sense as being white and and as I've said before this architecture style doesn't suit a pizzeria IMO. I'll come up with a use for the yellow building later on, most likely a 16 wide deli/Jamon shop. I will likely leave these pieces es mostly in their bag for now. JC ext: Swap all blue with black, will use 1x2 with groove or fluted profile where possible for some texture so it's not totally flat. Add some more pearl gold accents on the ground floor. Place in the centre of the baseplate and build it out, recessing the extensions 1 brick like the centre of the building. I think it would look better to mirror the central window feature in the new side extensions which looks lovely but obscured by the sign. Swap the ground floor windows for door frames and pop some more posters in there, or an interesting printed glass. Possibly replace the printed sign with a brick built version in the style of the Cafe Corner hotel sign and use the tiles as a poster. JC Int: With the extra 12 studs of real estate I think there's room for. Priority woulds be to build a bigger stage, add a grand piano, Trumpeter, full drum kit, Uplighters, perhaps a chandelier The managers office could be expanded OR turn it into a mezzanine floor with more seating for people to watch the band. (like the Club in Marvel's Luke Cage which is loosely based on the famous 'Cotton Club' in Harlem Swap out the floor tiles with a warmer toned feel or a mosaic. Posters and art on the walls A cocktail bar possible moonshot: Stick the Jazz quartet on the roof as a giant 3d advert. Here's a pretty terrible photoshop job that I made to illustrate my idea. I'll share the finished project mid-January! -

I wouldn’t agree with everything here, and what I’m getting at is that you just don’t really see pizza places inside colonial stucco style buildings in Europe or New York, whereas you DO tend to see police stations in grand beaux-arts style civic buildings, it could just as easily be a Library by that same point and one would expect to see something like an antiques store or bookshop or tabaconist in the Victorian era bookshop building. Similarly, very few business could go well in the 1930/40s streamline moderne diner other than maybe a jive club/similar period accurate activity. I would argue that previous modular buildings DO tend to suit the use of the building to the original architectural style. The town hall for example, even if it were converted into a wine bar 100 years later, you would instinctively know it used to be a town hall as it has that colonial revival style. -

Oh for sure, I should have said architecturally. Remove the 10 plates of Red Green White awning and the umbrella, the pizza chef- then what kind of business is this? It'd be very hard to find a pizza place like this anywhere in Manhattan, or Little Italy Chicago- it looks closer to a Spanish or Portuguese colonial revival building. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
jonahtron replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Makes sense. Although, not to keep basing it- If there were no pizza chef on the outside of the Jazz clubs yellow neighbour I'd have no idea what business it was. Pizza places don't tend to look like this in Chicago and they are generally simple buildings in New York. TBH the Spider-man 76108 pizza is closest representation what these places look like. I'm trying to come up with an alternative use for the yellow store as it doesn't read "pizza' to me at all. Could look a little like a Trattoria in Rome, but looks closer to Spanish colonial buildings you find over Central America... -

A clockmaker/ watchmaker could easily be the same build, perhaps as part of an Italianate town square set inside a clock tower, lots of pearl gold recolours of technic gears lining the walls etc. for those of us that do enjoy the Streamline modern 1930s Diner, I just remembered that the BTS set is due out soon. I had a look at the original music video and the stores are actually cgi and quite blocky. Plus I'm not sure why we need another giant donut on the roof of a building, we've got that from City. It could either suck and be on sale within 5 minutes like the Queer Eye set or be an amazing way to add some more 1930s buildings to the city. There's a record store in this set for all the Video tiles at least! I know this is just an easy cash cow for LEGO as the ideas set hit 10k within 8 hours, so they are pretty confident- but I hope they put some effort into it! -
