Guilds of Historica Introduction/General Discussion Thread
Gabe replied to I Scream Clone's topic in Guilds of Historica
Agreed. I initally considered joining Nocturnus for the evil fun factor and amazing latitude in building styles, but at the time Kaliphlin had one fewer member, so i headed south. But you know, wherever you end up, you can usually find some way to make the terrain fit in with what YOU want to build, rather than being dictated by it. -

Gosh, another new neighbour! It's getting quite crowded down here in our corner of Kaliphlin. Welcome Yoshi, i look forward to seeing Belt Muntanji arise on the flanks of the Rakath - consider us here in Peregrinus your freinds and allies! I've worked out what i'm planning to do for the challenge now - i'm planning it to be, ahem, rather explosive! I'm a bit scared about how to tackle it though, what i want may be a bit too ambitious for me. I guess i won't find out until i try...? I'm planning to get in a couple of free builds before i start that though - a barracks/millitary academy for West Berigora and i'm still waiting for parts for my flagship. Here's a couple of progress pics though, just to show you all what i've been up to in the last week: The barracks. This was initially just meant to be a training scene for my archers, but it kinda grew on me. It will have a fully furnished interior when it's finished. Very early stages for my galley - waiting on some boat parts and more oarsmen to flesh it out properly, although i should really get on and start in on the stern. ps. Mikel, your micro-scale castle looks brilliant, can't wait to see some some pics of the larger version! -
Great stuff Ryan, it looks absolutly fantastic - great photos too! It looks right at home in the Nicholson museum there, i just wish i lived close enough to pop in and view it in situ. This was such a fun project to be a part of, so thankyou again for the opportunity!

Just another stunning MOC from you - the tower and wall section is great, but what i really love is the surrounding landscaping and the little boat - they really set the scene, and the boat sails add a appropriately romantic touch to the proceedings. Brilliant!
-
Congrats on your recent engagement deGothia! All of Historica looks forward to yours and Lena's marriage i am sure. Lovely little street build too - the corner house looks particularly nice.
-
Just beautiful. The gaurdtowers look great when paired up with the gatehouse and the drawbridge lowered. Looks like you had fun at Brickworld!
-
Nice little build Kayne! I do like your grey "Withers wood" tree, i'd like to see a whole forest of those. The little fortress with it's round tower is also very nice, and it's good to see the new horse making an appearence! I do worry about the elves getting wet feet though - they look like they are on a bit of a flood plain there.
-
Wow, what a beauty! Although the exterior of the building is impressive in scale and execution, the interiors are really where it's at for me. I love the well thought out layout, with plenty of room for detail and access between floors. The angles of the roof sit together so well and the bionicle elements are well intergrated too. If i have one small criticism, it might be that the colour scheme is a little bland for such a huge, sprawling building - i kind of wish there was a little more exterior "pop". But that's nitpicking, i know.
-
A fascinating build - there is so much to look at, my eye doesn't know where to go first! The "main street" area looks great and i love the little cutaways into the buildings from the back. I also really like the totem and all the crazy dead trees. I'm not so sure what's going on with the huge dog-like creature though... is it an attacking elemental or a village gaurdian? You are creating a vibrant, complex world with your MOC's of the clawbreakers and thier neighbours - great work, can't wait to see more!
-
Great new edition Mikel! I love the micro-oasis, just genius. I have to say though, those barriers for the "monster-fighters" tournament looks a bit flimsy, archers or not! Suicide-zone seating maybe?

Sorry i've been so quiet of late peeps, work has been crazy busy over the last few weeks. Not so good for building, but great for the Lego fund! I've got some sorting to do over the next day or two, then it's back into some free-builds for me. Nice to see some LOTR pieces showing up in MOCS already! I got my sets last weekend and they are already parted out into my storage boxes, awaiting construction! ps. Nice Withers Woods creation Kayne! I've been meaning to visit that area myself sometime - there is so much scope to build there i reckon. -
Very cool - the minatour tower looks great with all the shields set into the overhang like that, and the bulbous tower looks very Nocturnian! The "keep out" sign is a cute touch too. The lava landcape works well, although i find the demarcation between the the fire area and the studded ground to be a bit too abrupt - i think if you'd extended the stone walkway out further it would have tied the two areas together more seamlessly. It's nice to get a continuation of Daniel's storyline - i'd forgotten all about him! It will certainly be interesting to see how the civil war in Nocturnus plays out in the months to come... ps. What is that in the side of the base (at the front)? A light brick? pps. Great presentation too btw - that purple background works really well with the colours you've got!

All right, we are just a sniff away from overhauling Avalonia, great stuff everyone! Congrats as well to Erynlasgalen for topping the Kaliphlin entries, a well deserved win for a great entry. (those mountain orcs look like a sweet prize too! ) Zcerb, that's a lovely Kaliphlin tower - must have been a lot of work to make one for each guild AND finish your gatehouse as well! Have fun at Brickworld! -

No rule that i know of... i say go for it! There are a few ppl around GoH that use bionicle elements - Siercon and Coral, Liqr and Captn Beerbeard come to mind. -

What! Our heroine Kathryn imprisioned and Historica threatened by some would-be overlord? This will not stand! Methinks this mage has overreached himself, unless his intent be to pull the wrath of all the guilds upon him! ps. Awesome builds SoT - interesting to see the overlap in the "Rise of the Mage" storyline too. Can't wait to hear about the challenge proper now. -
Great little challenge! I'll see if i can whip something up for this, although i'll be pretty busy with everything i've got planned already...

Beautiful light DeGothia, especially in the first pic, as others have said. I do think that the soft, cool tones look more suited to early morning than late afternoon though. Mind you, the late afternoon sun always casts such deep, harsh shadows in Kaliphlin, i guess it falls more differently in Avalonia? Anyway, our thoughts are with you in the battles to come (although perhaps you may not find the foe you expect!) - may you and your men return safely to the peace of your homes once more. ps. Just a tiny criticism - your banners and helmet plumes look to be flowing in the opposite direction!
-
So cool... there are no words to describe your ingenuity. I don't know what those lime snake parts at the base of the trees are, but they look brilliant there. The whole scene has an airiness and justness that suits the subject perfectly. I love it!
-
Lovely tower Ecclesiastes! I think i like the reverse view best, with the training scene in the foreground - works really well as a composition.
-
Nice work - a very dramatic feel to this moc with all the fire flying around. I do like the batwing staffs too. I'm just wondering what the little chibi dragon is doing at the back there - burning someone to death with it's cuteness?

Some very interesting piece usage going on here, i just wish i could get more of an overview of the entire moc - it seems substantial in size but i can't really get a feel for it. I do like your use of the Brickforge energy swords for pikes - they look great! Now you are part of Kaliphlin, you should get some more red flags in there too. -

Ah wow, and the crazy events keep coming! DaMaximus, that's very disturbing news about the assasination attempt - we have contacted the Rakath mountain assasians and they swear they had nothing to do with it. I shall do my best to enquire as to what orginisations might have paid for or sanctioned this hit, and pass on any information as it comes to light. Petera, i hope that Dugal is found safe and well soon... i'm sure the reward will help, although hopefully it won't come to paying off kidnappers. Congrats to Mikel on The Kaliphlin Times - informative and thought provoking stuff! I love the little printing press too... Lol. That kind of trash talk might get you respect in your own guild, but we scoff at it here in Kaliphlin. No need to declare anything against you - your foolishness speaks for itself! ~~~~~ I have been sadly unable to get onto any freebuilds lately - work is sucking up all of my build time atm. (But it's amazing work, so i can't complain! ) But in a week or so i should be back into it. Lots of defensive work going on in Peregrinus atm - archers are being equipped with new, more powerful bows, the causeway gatehouse is being strengthened, our shipyards fortified and most excitingly, we have begun construction of a new flagship! We are also sending out diplomatic envoys - more on that later. -
Wish i was there! Ah well, maybe next year... have fun everyone and post lots of pics!

Thanks for the review Plisskin! This set looks like the weakest of the MF line to me, Anne is a brilliant fig but i think i'd prefer to save my cash for the ghost train.
-
Great reviews of these MF sets Plisskin, thanks heaps! I think you've changed my mind about this one - initially i thought it had a really cobbled together look, but on further inspection the car looks great and there are some really nice peices in the tree too. I'll be waiting until it gets discounted though.
