From conrad-uk.com I got a 12v motor "RAILWAY X-TRAIN 263 HO" - article number "229021" - that fits as a replacement for old 4.5v or RC/PF motors, not sure about 9v. I've only tinkered with them, the problem I have is taking off the metal gear from the original motor pins and putting them on the new motor without damaging the gear teeth, still haven't got very far.. There is a Railbricks article, page 41 of issue 6, about using them in the old 4.5v '70s type motors, so I know they should work and they certainly fit into the casing of the RC/PF motors.. Alternatively, you could switch to using two PF motors and use modified decorative sides as pickups, Udo's suggestion here

How to Disassemble 12V Tracks without Breaking Sleepers
bricks n bolts replied to ced64k's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Not really, the only thing I do is make sure I grip the end of the rail when pulling it off, if you try to pull the rail from the centre you have more chance of breakages. Age may be an issue, I think they go a bit brittle after time, I have more problems with rails breaking than sleepers. -
The fact you got the motor into the Lego housing with friction alone is impressive, I would love to hear from anyone else who has managed to make a brick built housing for an off the shelf motor (and who is willing to share of course)!

Whilst looking through some of the LugPol posts/ links I stumbled upon this method of replacing pickups on the 12v motors. There is no explanation but you get a rough idea from the pictures.

Broken quote removed by moderator -TheBrickster All very nice, I'm tempted to have a go at the "Donnerbuechse", pity no instructions but very good starting point for a reverse engineering challenge. Also, anyone seen or tried to get old-style signals like his working remotely and maybe with interrupt rails such as on the old 12v 'traffic lights'?

You can only deep link images here, rather than upload them, so you have to upload them somewhere else first or you can attach it as a file if that's not possible

Thanks hoeij, I must give this a try on some of mine which have those symptoms. BnB

Making/adjusting Flex cables for steam-engine
bricks n bolts replied to legodjw's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Hi Legodjw, thanks for the link, I've added 3mm tubes for now, if I get issues when it runs I'll give the tubes a try. BnB -
As others have said, it's an amazing build! Brilliant crane, fantastic mix of tiling, even the lampposts work!

Awesome collection you got there!! That's a lot of toxic sludge to leave near those poor towns people

Nice solution, don't they come in black anyway? ( http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=43093 and http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=3749 )

Making/adjusting Flex cables for steam-engine
bricks n bolts replied to legodjw's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Welcome to the club tr1820 I've only just composed a list of parts in the pdf instructions but not in the parts list, may be as yet incomplete but better knowing before ordering so you don't experience the same pain : 1 black 2706 Technic, Figure Foot (thanks go to LT12V to finding the part number) 14 black 50950 slopes 4 light grey 33299 Technic lift arms 2 dark grey 6642 Technic, Flex Cable End 4 dark grey 6643 Technic, Flex Cable End 2 dark grey 2900 Technic, Flex Cable End, Pin Connection (Old) 4 bb08c05L Technic, Flex Cable 5L 2 light grey bb08c12L Technic, Flex Cable 12L 2 black 4477 1x10 plate 2 black 43857 Technic, Liftarm 1 x 2 Thick Plus you need Flex tube in black, dark grey and red Haven't looked at the XML file format yet. Those would the same as BBB Large wheels and not XL, the point for me is I want to use XL wheels as that is both part of the appeal and related to how I want to motorise it (see here ). If I don't get enough friction I would have to add my own o-rings, there is a tutorial by Toastie here for doing that. The only thing I'm not sure about there is whether there is a Lego made rubber band in red that would fit the BBB XL wheels and if so what's the part number.. EDIT : Added two more items to the missing list EDIT EDIT : Only need 14 slopes, not 18 and removed Blokbricks reference as you can actually get 3mm tube in red -
Found a nice picture of a similar loco in Austria: http://www.flickr.co...in/photostream/

Making/adjusting Flex cables for steam-engine
bricks n bolts replied to legodjw's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Hi legodjw, I'm also in the process of building a copy of Ben Beneke's BR23, very nice engine I also wish to thank Dluders for those Bricklink references! Wondering what wheels are you using if not the BBB XL ones? The red flex cable doesn't seem to generally available so I've ordered some custom Flex cable from Blockbricks.nl, that's yet to arrive. Not sure whether I'll then experience the same problem you are having with the flex cable rubbing on the side of the wheels. Also wondering, do you have a link you could share for your `bezemdraad afhouders`? Happy New Year! BnB -
Wow! Some nice stuff on this guy's Brickshelf, never seen any of it before.
-
Makes sense, I don't hear anything like that on mine as they are controlled via a 12v transformer which just lowers the voltage for slower speeds.
-
Wow, amazing! Totally original design and the piston action is so smooth. It's fascinating how you managed that VLMNR8R Would make a great Railbricks article
-
Wow, so many many brilliant details, congratulations LT12V! You really now have the most awesome BR collection I'm totally at loss when it comes to piston design and gearing, so much to think about...

Fantastic, great winter village!

Christmas Train: Arrival of Santa & 'His' Goods
bricks n bolts replied to JopieK's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I like this a lot, you've created a nice 'Town' feeling with all the detail. Especially like how you've done the bunting/lighting and the open wagon with the classic gate bricks gives it authenticity. PS Now I found your site am going to order ones of those Coca Cola machines and restock my 77** stickers. -

Greetings Udo, a very stylish model and beautiful upgrade compared with the classic 7755, congratulations, just in time for Christmas!

MOD+ARTICLE: Motorizing Ben Beneke’s BR23
bricks n bolts replied to Toastie's topic in LEGO Train Tech
So did I, fantastic work to get all that gearing working perfectly on top of the beautiful design. Some really nice tips, thank you so much for sharing and writing the instructions, have already ordered most the parts but I'm sure mine won't be as majestic. BnB -
Take the (PF-engine 8866), on the old 9 volt rails
bricks n bolts replied to ust60's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I'm guessing you need two for the two pair's worth of converted decorative sides/pickups. Without that you'll have problems with point switches/cross tracks/dead spots, like on 12v you need a pair at least for smooth motor running. -
Wow, so cute ! Reminiscent of blue era trains due to the enforced simplicity of narrow gauge and the battery wagon. You managed to get so much detail in there - great work! Have you tried on grey or blue era track? I guess what you saying is that would make it run on the flanges also, slowing it down. The ME rails are the same depth as grey/blue track but are a lot smoother (no ridges or rough bits) so that's the probably the thing to try. BnB
