909 National Limited with streamlined 4-8-2 steam locomotive - real life MOC

This train is named the 909 National Limited, a (fictional) early 1930's steam-powered train run by Brick Railway Systems. This transcontinental train has it's respective east or west bound sections leave New York (or Los Angeles) on Monday at 9-AM sharp for the 3-day "Day" trip to the final destination, 72 hours distant, at 9:00 AM on Thursday. Then, after that train is cleaned and restocked in less than 12 hours, than it, or the standby train if their is delays, can be sent back as the "Night" section on-wards at 9-PM Thursday to 9-PM Sunday night. At 9-AM Monday morning, the whole cycle repeats anew for the next week. Their are five complete train-sets, two being used at any one time, two being cleaned and restocked on a bi-weekly basis, and one for standby in case of breakdowns. Also, coaches are in ready to use condition in several yards in large cities, just waiting to be dropped into place if a car needs to be worked on en-route. There are seven of the streamlined 4-8-2 "Mountain" type engines (numbers 4307 to 4314) assigned to the 909 National Limited, with a rotating pool of rolling repair and preventative maintenance schedules vigorously followed. Here we see engine 4312, it was built in the late 1920's by Lima locomotive Works. It was one of the lucky few of the 50 engines bought by Brick Railway Systems to receive a complete streamlined casing shortly after being assigned to 909 National Limited in 1931, along with six other's of it's type. It is painted in reddish brown with a fluted black side stripe on the engine and black box stripe on the tender to keep it in line with the passenger cars of the 909 National Limited, it's assignment for the foreseeable future. In reality, this locomotive was inspired by the South Australian Railways 520 class 4-8-4 and the hover mono-rail engine from the Legend of Korra TV Show, while the train coaches were inspired by a vintage 2009 LEGO model of "Galaxy Express 999". (Link to Brickshelf here ) The real story behind the of the name 909 Limited is a combination of this fantasy train and the Beatles song "One after 909", which is sort-of about a train. This is where the food is cooked and baggage is stored on the transcontinental journey. I don't know if such a car type really exists, but if not, I'm not sure what to call it... any suggestions? One of these cars is a sleeper, one a dining car, and one is a coach. But YOU get to guess which one is which! (Answer: They are exactly the same externally and there is no inside details. Only my imagination provides the difference!) The observation car at the end of the train has a viewing platform for looking at all the wonders this country has to offer as they go by. Builders Notes: So I looked back through the forum archive, and didn't see a topic posted for this train by itself. I saw one with other trains with it, but not one by itself, and it wasn't even in real bricks... so here is my updated for 2019 pictures and detailed description for this revised model. Also, the three day journey each way is plausible, as I asked Google, and it spit out a map from 1930 that said it took a train three days (72 hours) to get from Los Angeles to New York City. Now, I know that most trains headed to LA started in Chicago, but I'm ignoring that fact in my alternate reality LEGO-world here steam never died off completely, Amtrak doesn't exist in the semi-corporate mess it does today, and the electrification of the Milwaukee Road reached from the Twin Cities region to the Pacific ocean and are still there today. On that note, the North East Corridor wires stretch all the way to Chicago. ...anyway, kinda got off topic there. Limited Slip Differential

(Sorry for mistakes (I'm not from Britain / America)) I was thinking about LSD (Limited Slip Differential) in lego. Because all I saw yet were just differentials with locking mechanism that engages after few turns of axle. And only thing it was limitting was main function of differential. So I came out with this solution - I know it isn't great, but it is very simple and compact (actually you add one rubber band inside differential (under spider gear)). What that does ? - When axles want to spin at different speeds (while cornering) more power is required (so you lose some speed if you don't have powferful motor) but, if one wheel lose traction the other one gets more power (compared to open differential) and you can also set how much additional friction you wat (by adding different number of rubber bands inside). 909 National Limited with 2-10-4 "Texas" type steam engine

As some of you may know, I changed the black-and-red Texas type steam engine to a more photogenic reddish brown color and added a bigger smoke-box door to the front of the engine. Here is the original version of this engine from a few months back. ...and here is the new version, with a photo taken earlier this month. Their was one problem with this engine though. It had only my 8-studs wide 34-studs long train cars for it to pull. These four (yes, only four) train cars looked really weird next the engine, as the cars were almost as long as the engine (without the tender)! So, I set about redesigning the coaches, which had named the 909 National limited. Here is the results of that rebuilding: This car is the baggage / passenger car, also known as a combine. These two cars are passenger coaches, though I might just make a third one someday. Also, as you may have noticed, the cars are too far apart from each other. This was fixed by moving the wheels back a hole in the train base soon after the photos were taken. The car you see here is just the observation with it's "909" plaque on the rear. Where did get the idea for these tain cars in the first place? They were inspired by a 8 wide Galaxy Express 999 MOC I saw years ago on Brickshelf. (see it here: http://www.brickshel...ry.cgi?f=374748 ) The name of this train was changed to the tune of the Beatles song "One after 909" from the album "Let it Be". Then I tried a bunch of words after that could go with 909, including the following: limited, express, cannonball, flyer, runner, and a bunch of other names and combination of said names I can't recall. Eventually, I ran into National Limited on accident when correcting a typo. I liked the way it sounded, and thus 909 National Limited was born. As a side note, the LDD file for the coaches cannot be given out, for two reasons: 1) MOCpages is having issues with missing pictures, e-mail notifications, and the broken activity bar. MOCpages also happens to be where I upload my LDD files. 2) I made these train spur-of-the-moment, and thus their is no file to give out anyway! I'm quite sure you could figure out how the coaches were made, but if you can't, I will make an LDD file and upload it when MOCpages gets back on the right track. (train pun intended!) -
When I saw the release pictures of this little christmas set I really needed to have it. It fits perfectly with the other christmas sets, and I just have a weakness for christmass trees. So, lets see how this free set holds up! This is my first review made, and english is not my native language so please bear with me! Theme: Seasonal Holiday Set name: Christmas Tree Stand Set Number: 40082 Price: $9,99 / Free Pieces: 115 Minifigures: 2 Year of release: 2013 The Box: The box has a really nice design, featering a nice scene where the lady buys a christmas tree. A big red stamp display that this is a 2013 exclusive set, which makes it that much better. The back features the 2 limited edition sets from this year, the christmas tree stand and the car. They both fit together perfectly and make for a nice play set on its own. The sides of the box are very standard, the bottom shows again the red stamp and the top displays the salesman with a broom at actual size. Nothing special here! Inside the box: Inside the box we find 3 seperate bags. Can't wait too open them! The instructions are very clear and simple to follow, with a nice part call-out on every step and a relaxing blue background. Inside the bags: The first bag, with a brand new purple hat! I think its really pretty and fits the winter style perfectly. Also some lego money, which I cant get enough off. The second bag, nothing special here. The third bag, with some lovely christmas trees and dark red tiles. And all of the parts in one big collection! Minifigs Here are the 2 lovely minifigures, and the lady of course with her brand new purple hat. I also really like the scarf of her. And now, the actual build. We start off with this small tool rack, I think it would have been fine without the bricks under it, but this works great too. The next thing we build is -of course- the stand where the shopkeeper sells his trees from. I really love the design, although I think the bright red tiles on the roof are a bit too vibrant, but I love the little lights under it and the decoration. Its also really small, only 4 studs wide. And to finish it all off, the railings are attached to both sides of the building so the shopkeeper can fence of his christmas trees! There is also some lovely decoration placed on it. Finished! And there we have it, our end result after we have placed the christmas trees inside the fence. Woo! I really love the look of it, its small yet has a lot of playability. And with a few other christmas sets combined. It fits perfectly with the other sets! Don't really pay attention to the lay out, I set it quickly up for the picture. Final comments: This is my first review I've made, so I would love to have some feedback! English is not my native language so writing lots of text is hard for me, and there might be lots of errors in the review. Sorry for that! Design & Colour scheme – 9/10 (I really love the design, and the colours just fit perfectly with the christmas theme and all the other sets.) Minifig – 8/10 (Just your basic minifigs, but I really love the purple hat so a little higher) Parts – 8/10 (I love getting the christmas trees, and ofcourse the purple hat, apart from that there is not a lot going on.) Playability – 8/10 (I love that it has a lot of playability for such a small set, so thats really cool.) Build – 7/10 (Really simple, so nothing special.) Price – 10/10 (Its free! I would almost like it to give it a higher point for this) Overall: 8.3, Really good!
