  1. How quaint.

I love how frighteningly inconsistent the Bionicle fanbase is. First, CCBS was ruining what used to be a technic-based line, now technic is ruining CCBS by makign the sets look more like OG Bionicle sets.

You really can't make up your minds at all. Seems like people hate/like whatever's convenient so that they can complain about something, I guess.

News flash: The people who think CCBS was ruining Bionicle and the people who think Technic is ruining Bionicle are two different sets of people. This is not the Bionicle fandom being fickle and inconsistent, it is two different groups of people with differing opinions. I know it's easier to lump a group together so you can put yourself above them for your contrary opinion, but that doesn't make it a sensible or rational argument.

I have been a huge fan of CCBS since its introduction almost five years ago, and have viewed heavy technic use as a disappointing step away from both getting more CCBS pieces and introducing new CCBS techniques to sets. My disappointment in 2016's Uniters is not inconsistent.

(Nor do I think it's "ruining" Bionicle, it is just a major factor in why I don't like a lot of the 2016 winter wave. But that's besides the point.)

  2. Still don't like the Uniters or Umarak very much, but that does mean that I get to revamp them. I kinda missed that after the 2015 Toa were so good it was unnecessary.

The critters are great and I can't not love the Nuva symbols on all the Toa.

But god, all that ugly technic taking away from proper CCBS designs. Blech.

  3. I will say I like the creatures and the Nuva symbols being featured so heavily is a real treat, especially in a story about unity.

There are some ideas I like here, but unlike 2015 these sets look like they'd need some serious work before I'd really like them. Mostly starting with stripping out all the technic in favor of superior CCBS body builds.

  4. I'm glad trans purple is getting a bunch of parts unlike olive green or that light turquoise from 2014.

Single-part colors are kind of a bummer sometimes. =/

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Dark blue! Here's hoping it picks up more than the 6M shells from Kopaka

  5. I meant cheaper to produce then the Gen1 System, my bad. I was comparing CCBS's scarcity of recolors to how many we were supplied in G1. I know people will throw the That's-Why-It-Failed argument in my face but whatever.

Well, actually, I don't think it really relates to why Bionicle failed at all. It's actually related to a lot of the problems TLG had up until it reorganized sometime around 2006, which is the last year we see a slew of new parts and colors in specific uses. Later on new parts colors and new parts were more limited, only introducing a handful of new elements at a time. This reorganization is actually what led TLG to become the superstar toy company it is today and recover from its spiraling decline.

  6. The only real positive stickers have is for MoCists. I MoC on a frequent basis, so I greatly enjoy the option to have the piece printed or unprinted depending on my preference at that time.

For people that just like to display and pose their sets, though, I can imagine stickers being nothing more a chore.

See, I get that, being a MoCist myself, but I find the cons far outweigh the "Well you don't have to use them" factor, myself.

  7. With only a few small adjustments it could potentially be made even better.

Well, yes! That is basically what I'm asking for. A few small adjustments to accommodate a wider selection of customization. Sure, potential Biofigs would expand the selection but it's still a pretty closed system. I mean, all I'd really want is printed heads to accommodate open-faced helmets, and the Ninjago skeleton torso so that armor parts not made for the figure work with the figure without looking inordinately ugly.

I want to make new characters! I have so many duplicates it's not funny, and the current design issues present roadblocks to this process.

  8. ...So? Those criticisms apply equally if not moreso to the older Bionicle figures.

Right, and that's a problem for them too, on top of the immobile legs and wonky sculpts. "Foo also did wrong thing" does not an argument make.

I can't imagine how to fix the first issue without requiring an entirely new torso design that's functionally identical,

Me neither, but reason or no, the lack of it is to some not insignificant detriment to the minifigs.

while I fail to see how the second issue is even an issue at all (if you want a helmet that shows the face... maybe swap in a more suitable face for the helmet in question). I feel printed faces would have been a mistake and only would have served to make it harder to line up the heads with the helmets so that the eyes showed through.

There don't really exist any sort of compatible "Hero Factory" faceprint out there, though? Most normal minifig heads would just create the illusion that it's a suit of armor or a cyborg, not a hero. And the idea that it'd be "hard to line up the eyes" is kind of ridiculous in how much of a non-issue it is. See the entire Legend of Chima toyline for more information.

The only problems you really have only have to do with customization,

That's uh, that's kinda the thing you do with LEGO parts, yeah? I don't buy LEGO for the micro action figures, broseph. That's Mega Blocks's niche. (And to be honest, they're much better at it than LEGO is.)

You're basically saying you hope future figs use a brand-new design, while criticizing the older figs solely for their design having been brand-new and not having been expanded enough. That seems awfully counterintuitive to me.

Well, no, using a bunch of parts from the Hero Figs isn't a problem, and I would expect them to reuse the arms and legs, but a solid torso and an actual face would open up a lot more options for making your own characters.

  9. What issues did you have with the Hero Factory minifigs? I thought they were plenty versatile, especially since their torso armor and helmets could be used on traditional minifigures. If I could put my sigfig in Bionicle armor and a Bionicle mask I'd be a happy camper. :)

The only real limit on the Hero Factory minifigs compared to traditional minifigures was that their wrists couldn't rotate, and I thought the ability to clip things to the arms and legs helped make up for that.

You couldn't give different armors to Herofigs without it looking gappy or weird, and the lack of any sort of face print severely limited what helmets you could use with the figure. So you were stuck with the one kind of armor with a very limited selection of helmets to choose from to build your own miniature heroes. At least you could swap an Exo-Force arm in if you wanted a weapon arm or something.

  10. I don't think so, no. First of all, making playset figures large enough to accommodate a gear function would partially negate the main advantage of having minifigure versions of the characters in the first place, which is making it easier to build larger vehicles and settings at a reasonable price. Sets of iconic settings like the Forge of the Mask Makers would easily double in price compared to a version designed for smaller minifigures. Also, even figures the size of the old Technic figures would require gears much smaller than any LEGO has ever produced outside of pre-assembled components like electric motors.

If LEGO did playset-style figures again, I'd honestly prefer them to have a similar build to the Hero Factory mini-robots from last year, perhaps with a new torso armor piece that better resembles the full-size sets' armor.

I just hope that if we get minifigs again, that they're a little more versatile than the Hero Factory minifigs.

  11. I wasn't saying I personally held that opinion, but I was saying that the majority of the fanbase most likely would.

Oh no! That absolutely was not targeted at you! And I apologize for the misconception, I too was commenting on the inherent silliness of the fanbase.

  12. I think LEGO could only afford the one male voice actor. That's why her voice is so manly. What annoys me most is that Gali has done...little to nothing in the animations. I think that's worse than her manly voice. Since we are also on this subject, I wonder why there couldn't be more female characters adapted for the six toa....I could very well have seen Lewa and Kopaka as female characters. Anyway, that's just my opinion. I would love them all the same.

    *chants* O-nu-a! O-nu-a!

    =P

  13. The minifigure is Silver Metallic (Flat Silver), not gunmetal (Titanium Metallic/Pearl Dark Grey). That would make a Captain Phasma figure even simpler, since a lot of the parts will already be available in Silver Metallic from Jango. The only question is whether they'd have two figures as visually similar as the First Order Stormtrooper and Captain Phasma together within a single wave. But seeing how prominently Phasma is featured in other lines of The Force Awakens merchandise, I actually wouldn't be surprised for her to be in the first wave of The Force Awakens buildable figures, even with the First Order Stormtrooper already confirmed.

Oh, okay! I've only seen photos/videos of her minifig, she tends to look pretty dark in those! Thanks for the clarification!

  14. Overall really impressed with this guy, cool parts, great recolors, and comes together very nicely from the front.

From the sides and back, well, less so, but I'm okay with that. I'm not a huge fan of how lame looking the technic chunks look as the guns or jetpacks, since they look more like a bunch of parts than what they're meant to represent.

That said, this model really is quite nice, and even if his guns are kinda lame, he ends up being really fun to pose, especially because he gets cool jetpack poses!

  15. This guy was really fun to build, save for some overly tight technic bits, but ultimately I feel he came together kind of poorly. There are weird gaps in his torso and around his hips, and everything below his chest armor is kind of wonky looking. It doesn't do a whole lot to convince me that a more CCBS styled approach wouldn't be superior like it is in General Grievous.

That said, I appreciate the ambition in this model, and you get some killer parts out of it, but I don't think it will stay together long.
