  1. Yeah. While I wouldn't mind them retreading old ground (CCBS remakes of the Bohrok or Phantoka would be awesome) I guess it depends on where they want to go with it. It's pretty obvious that they're starting on 2001 again, but whether it will go straight to the 2002 story with Bohrok, or somewhere new entirely, is anyone's guess. If they went somewhere new with it, I'd rather have easter eggs than none of the old stuff at all.

Oh, I'm sure there'll be Easter Eggs. They're about the easiest thing a writer can do. That's why I'm really more worried about the tone of the story, theme, and characters than anything else. :P

  2. I gave an example a while back of the new Matoran (still assuming that there are any) crafting masks out of powered disks (a reference to Kanoka). There could also be a village covered in Visorak webbing, the inclusion of later masks like the Mask of Fusion, old Rahi in new forms... maybe an amnesic Dark Hunter could wash up on shore one day. They don't have to call them by their old names if it would confuse new fans, but their inclusion would be a cool reference to those who were with Bionicle in those years.

I sort of see what you mean, but that's a lot of references to cram into one year. Is it a good idea to get all of those little Easter Eggs out in one year, though? There'd be none left for other years. Right now, it seems like they're taking care of 2001-2003. Besides, cramming each and every reference into just one year would not only require a lot of media detracting from the main story, but... honestly, it would cheapen a lot of it. Part of what I loved about BIONICLE was the slow but ultimately mind-blowing progression from one city being in danger (I got into the story in 2004 as well), to realizing that there are bigger forces than the Toa and Teridax at play, to having to save the universe... The effect of the Visorak webbing only had value in the original story because they devoted the whole tone and theme to it, and progressed up to it by setting the city up as something that was once majestic but got corrupted, just like the Toa. If you just make a village covered in the webbing, it loses all that. It becomes an Easter Egg.

  3. I know you were in diapers when they switched greys, but the overall online community has always been full of arguments, angry disagreements, personal vendettas, etc.

Like the argument and angry disagreement (and subtle insult) you're perpetrating in this very sentence? XD

  4. Catching up on some of the older comments... KoN, out of curiosity, how would you have expected LEGO to include fans who got into the story all at different times? Like, how would you do it specifically? I mean, for those who just came in 2006, you'd have a way different Toa team than those who started out in 2001 or 2004, and way different plots. For 2008, some of the bit draws were the dark Makuta species (which would now have to utilize the gangster/tyrannical appeal of the Piraka) and the swamps/stalactites, which would probably be crowded next to the tropical island and futuristic (and also post-apocalyptic) metropolis. And then there's.... 2009.

I don't mean to make this confrontational, or even rhetorical. It's just that, as others have pointed out, each year was pretty diverse, so I'm just curious what you had in mind.

  5. Half the reason LOTR was written was so that Tolkien could show off the language he created. Does that make LOTR terrible too, then? :/

I'm not saying I agree with the comic or anything. I liked BIONICLE's terminology. I just have an xkcd-linking addiction, and in this case, thought it was relevant and perhaps would even make a point.

(Also, read the hover-over text, since you bring up Tolkien)

  6. A BIONICLE game... and it'll be on the PC? Finally! Hope that the use of the masks and elements makes more sense this time around and offers more freedom than in BIONICLE Heroes (which, though still fun, wasn't really good at representing the real characters and/or their abilities).

I'll ignore the story bits for now, though I must say I like where it seems to be going so long as the villain lives up to the potential he now has...

  7. Gah... is it just me, or does Kopaka have nipples? Still looks awesome, but I mean, LEGO, come on...

All in all, though, these look pretty good. I love the new legpieces for the Spiders, Gali's double-feature weapon is awesome... All-in-all, the best Constraction sets I've seen in quite a while.

  8. Not sure if anyone's noticed this yet, but one nice thing I see about the skull island set upon closer observation is that pushing down the palmtree would seem to lift up the skull and reveal the treasure. Not super amazing, but better than the last skull island where the play feature was basically "Rotate the door to open just like a real door!"

  9. That set with the mini pool and turtle is hilarious. XD Why the heck is the turtle sliding into the pool with Olivia (or whoever it is)?

Those scissors are great, but I can live without them if it'd mean buying a full hair salon set. Very interesting to see WyldStyle's hair getting a recolour, though.

If only we got to see the Pizzeria... that would've been nice. I wonder if Name comes in that one too. They seem to be in a lot of sets this year.

  10. I think the Castle builders will be drooling over the banners in those Battlepacks.

Indeed, they are useful. I normally stay away from Chima, but I may pick up one of those. Heck, the entire wave is a big improvement over the last one. Still probably won't pick up more than a battlepack, but between the new fire elements and better designs, I was almost tempted.

  11. Soo.... what does everyone think the story is now? It looks like something along the lines of humans discovering the Anacondrai remains, as well as one remaining anacondrai, and forming a sort of "cult" around it, learning from the surviving Anacondrai and wearing/using the dead ones' "bones"... At least, I hope that's the case. Those'd be awesome villains. :P

Anyone notice that whereas most of the villains have no prints on them, there's this one guy with red eyes who DOES seem to? Weird...

Is the Yellow/Orange ninja holding a new weapon, or is it just a normal crossbow? I can't tell. Either's better than more swords, though... which I can't believe the ninja are hunting AGAIN...

  12. Most of these aren't too interesting, but if one were just starting their LEGO Pirates collection, these aren't a bad source of minifigs, cannons, or any of that really. Actually, the fort and ship seem like improvements over the 2009 ones (I'll probably get a lot of flak for that, but the 2009 ship's back looked really weird...). I picked up everything Pirate-wise I wanted in 2009, so I'll probably be skipping this, but all the same, it's not... horrible, really.
