I would imagine that the interior of the bb396c01 piece http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=3766159 would be a combination of the PF Receiver and the Medium PF motor. Peeron.com lists it as "'Electric Power Functions 4.5V IR Receiver RC Car Base' (x1953cx1)" ( http://peeron.com/inv/parts/x1953cx1 ). The entire unit is fairly compact. It came with the 2009 #8183 "Track Turbo RC" and #8184 "Twin X-Treme RC" sets. There's an interesting article at http://www.techbricks.nl/My-LEGO-projects/...ackturborc.html .

I took mine apart and took photos for my blog a while ago: http://www.mostlytechnic.com/2010/electric-power-functions-4-5v-ir-receiver-rc-car-base-internals/

No, there's no easy way to use it with anything else. I did learn though (see my other posts) that the speed control remote DOES work with this base unit.

Neat dissasembly photos.

I am wondering, is that steering mechanism an actual servo (with decent gearing)? or is it just magnetic steering?

A thought I had was that you could potentially make RC cars of different wheelbase/chassis setup using this module, if you use its front wheel axles to actuate steering links for wheels located elsewhere... This would require that it be strong enough though ie, not simple electromagnets...

thanks...

I don't know what it's actually using for the steering, I'm not an expert on the components. I tried controlling this unit with the speed controlling remote - it works and you do get varying amounts of steering. But it doesn't work great - the steering system isn't very strong (so I doubt you could really steer another mechanism like xenologer suggested) since it loses some of the discrete "steps" of steering once it's on the floor.

http://www.mostlytechnic.com/2010/lego-8183-track-turbo-rc-and-the-8879-speed-remote-control/ for more info from when I tried it.
