kibosh Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 These really are fantastic. Great job! It always bothered me that the Cafe Corner windows don't have glass, either. Quote
kevin8 Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 (edited) Great job, I would like to buy an hundred of them. You can submit the "affair" to your boss... :D Anyway, great job again! Edited September 5, 2014 by kevin8 Quote
TheBear Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 It always bothered me that the Cafe Corner windows don't have glass, either. That's because the 1x2x3 window wasn't available in 2007 but you can buy them now and fix it. Although I'm sure there will be a lot of purists that won't want to. Quote
Gaofar Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Modelmaker, great idea and execution. I have recently gotten access to a laser cutter and would love to make some for myself, but have no experience with the vector graphics necessary to accomplish this. Would it be possible for you to share your file?? Quote
Modelmaker Posted September 5, 2014 Author Posted September 5, 2014 Great job. It's a shame that the other building in the set will still have missing glass due to the use of panels. I really wish that Lego not only had glass for those rounded windows, but produced 1-wide windows like they used to in the old days. Yeah that's the other bit that bugs me but not as much as the arched frames, I could make glass to fit those narrow opes but it would probably have to be glued to stay in and i don't really want to do that. Well, I'm too much of a Lego purist to accept custom made pieces, but that surely is a brilliant idea. I agree with most of the previous comments: Why on earth does this part not exist? And I definitely second that! Technically it is a custom part, but it is a part that should exist already so it's more like a forgotten part. I don't normally make my own parts but that's how much it was bugging me. For the Palace Cinema I used the gold lattice part: And the black one for the Pet Shop. But I'd also like a simple glass instead, wondering why Lego does not make it. I didn't realize the cinema had the same problem but those gold lattice parts really suit it. The cinema is on my to buy list so it looks like i will need to save some glass for that. BTW you can fit both the glass and a lattice into one frame, One piece either side. Great job, I would like to buy an hundred of them. You can submit the "affair" to your boss... :D Anyway, great job again! I suppose if enough people where interested in getting them he could be persuaded that it might be worth it. But I know him and the kind of price he would charge per piece would be just stupidly greedy. Modelmaker, great idea and execution. I have recently gotten access to a laser cutter and would love to make some for myself, but have no experience with the vector graphics necessary to accomplish this. Would it be possible for you to share your file?? There isn't really a file, like i said i just scanned in a lattice part and traced the outside edge including the 3 dimples then cloned it 20 times and hit go on the laser. Our machine is nearly 15 years old and so is the connected PC and it uses some sort of Jurrasic CAD program and to be totally honest if I can make it work a 2 year old could probably do it in half the time. Infact my much younger workmate could have drawn up the shape in one click without having to scan the piece first. And i Didn't save the file because that could be considered evidence Quote
Bennemans Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Yup, I want them too! Put me on the list! Quote
Zerobricks Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Guess who might get a raise for playing at work and getting new costumers Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Hey this is a great professional work! I love those glasses! Quote
droomangroup Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Might be something that could be made with a 3D printer and clear filament... I bet more people have (or will soon have) access to 3D printers than laser cutting machines. 3D printers are going to be a game changer... no way. 3D printers, especially those made for consumers can't get anywhere near a glass like look. you'd be way better off sweet talking the OP for his cut file and taking it to a sign shop or plastic shop. plastic this thin cuts fast, in like a hour of setup/cutting you could have a crap load of these. if you live in a big city there's probably a maker space there like Techshop where you can get access to a cutter and do it yourself. But I know him and the kind of price he would charge per piece would be just stupidly greedy. This is very sad. I have my own firm with mills and other machineries and I usually let my workmen use these machineries if they need to produce their own parts... Obviously this happens after the bell rings... :) Unluckily I haven't a laser cut machine... Quote
glendo Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 You could create quite the business selling these. +1 There's a demand for this that you could fill my friend Quote
TheLegoDr Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 There is a demand for these, but it all boils down to price. However, I am quite content with the lattice parts to occupy my rounded windows, until LEGO makes this part officially. But I'd also like lattice for the 1x2x3 windows (not rounded). I think that would be useful too. Looking back at the box art, I am always surprised since I put the lattice in right when I bought all of them. So I don't think I've ever really seen them without the lattice. That is how used to the lattice I actually am. Kind of funny.. Quote
kibosh Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 It didn't even occur to me to use the lattice pieces. I'm going to pop those in until someone starts mass producing these bad boys. Quote
Vader X Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 did you polish the plastic with a torch or compound? Quote
