Modelmaker Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I really like the petshop set but one thing has been bugging me since i built the set. The top floor windows have no glass, Lego doesn't even make the glass to fit those frames Just look at those empty frames, to me they ruin the look of the building So the other day in work I made these.. Now I'm happy with the set I just wonder why don't Lego make the glass? They took me 10 minutes to design and make So come on Lego what's the deal? Quote
Modelmaker Posted September 4, 2014 Author Posted September 4, 2014 Lasers We have a laser cutter in work, I scanned the lattice piece that fits the frames then had the laser cut the same shape but in perspex. Quote
VintageLegoEra Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Lasers We have a laser cutter in work, I scanned the lattice piece that fits the frames then had the laser cut the same shape but in perspex. Can u please make for me and will talk about shipping cost? Quote
sithewok Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 You could create quite the business selling these. And on that note, I'd love to purchase some from you. Let me know if you're interested. Quote
Xyver Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I've never understood why Lego hasn't made a glass pane for these windows. They have lattice and a shutter, but considering how often the put them in sets with normal windows, they really do not a glass pane. Great work. Quote
Modelmaker Posted September 4, 2014 Author Posted September 4, 2014 Perspex is plastic. 1mm thick I only made 20 of them so far. Not to sure how the boss would react if i started making loads of them to sell. As you can probably see in the pic above, the laser burn slightly mists the edges of the window so each one has to be polished afterwards. Not sure i'd like to polish hundreds of these things. Quote
darrkwolf Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Your boss would not like it if he found out you were using his machines to selling stuff like that. Personal experience. Quote
droomangroup Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 nice! i love laser cutters. did you try cutting with a protective sheet on the plastic? or were you still getting the edge burn with that on it? i'm sure if you burned them with the protective sticker on most people wouldn't mind peeling it off. cool idea, wish i still had access to a laser, i'd totally make some of these. talos Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Palace Cinema could use that treatment too. I've always wondered why there was no clear glass for that window frame, just the diamond grill piece. Quote
Modelmaker Posted September 4, 2014 Author Posted September 4, 2014 These where just cut from a scrap piece i took out of the scraps bin so had no protective plastic on, but we have had problems in the past burning with the plastic on sometimes it sticks to the part leaving bits stuck permanently to it. Also depending on the manufacturer the protective stuff can give of poisonous fumes so it's always removed first. I just had an idea Maybe i should put these on the Lego Ideas site Quote
lightningtiger Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Great idea 'Modelmaker'........perhaps you could tell your boss that it would be a money maker.......as a business man myself I'm always looking at trying things out to make a profit ? Quote
Jern92 Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I used the diamond grill bits to fit those windows on my Pet Shop, but this is so much better! Now I wish I had a laser cutter lying around somewhere. If you happen to have any extra window panes, maybe send me 4 of them? Quote
Zerobricks Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Lego Ideas does not accept new parts... It sucks, I know... Quote

Especially since you are only using scrap bits of Perspex that was going to be thrown out anyway... It's all about reducing waste these days! Quote
tman684 Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Those are awesome! Maybe submit your idea to Brickforge or some other custom parts maker. Quote

CityBuilder Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Thats a great idea, I have no idea why Lego has never made glass for that window. Quote
beeman101 Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Good job ! Now only if i can find a laser cutter lying around... Quote
Kristel Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Looks great! I really don't understand why TLG hasn't made this part yet. Quote
TheBear Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Great job. It's a shame that the other building in the set will still have missing glass due to the use of panels. I really wish that Lego not only had glass for those rounded windows, but produced 1-wide windows like they used to in the old days. Quote
Withacee Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Well, I'm too much of a Lego purist to accept custom made pieces, but that surely is a brilliant idea. I agree with most of the previous comments: Why on earth does this part not exist? I really wish that Lego not only had glass for those rounded windows, but produced 1-wide windows like they used to in the old days. And I definitely second that! Quote
antp Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 (edited) Palace Cinema could use that treatment too. I've always wondered why there was no clear glass for that window frame, just the diamond grill piece. For the Palace Cinema I used the gold lattice part: And the black one for the Pet Shop. But I'd also like a simple glass instead, wondering why Lego does not make it. Edited September 5, 2014 by antp Quote
BirdOPrey5 Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Might be something that could be made with a 3D printer and clear filament... I bet more people have (or will soon have) access to 3D printers than laser cutting machines. 3D printers are going to be a game changer... Quote
