Essge Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Hi. I've tried to build a truck almost similar to the MAZ 537 8x8x4 truck which can be found in the Spintires game. I know the MAZ-truck got leafssprings in the rear. That is not important :) I cant find a good solution to a strong reliable independent suspension to use for offroading/crawling. I will be using 2x rc buggy motors, m-motor(s) for steering, a Traxxas XL-5 ESC and a servo hooked up du a PF-switch to make the steering work properly. 2.4 Ghz radio to get range (which IR-PF does not have f.ex in direct sunlight. For tires, I got 8 Axial ripsaw mounted on the standard big lego rims The real MAZ 537 does not have portal axles, and I cant find a lego version of the portal axles that is strong in combination with independent suspension. Do you guy/girls out here have a solution I maybe can use? Brickshelf has been down for a few days, so I cant just go and look :) Thanks in advance :) Quote
Zerobricks Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Why dont you use live axles for all axles? Quote
Essge Posted August 26, 2014 Author Posted August 26, 2014 I tried, but dont know how to make a good suspension type. Dont need to be with springs. Just need something that articulate the axles. Quote
Zerobricks Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Before you jump and make an 8x8 with no experiences I suggest you to make a smaller 4x4, there are ltos of tips you can also check on my chennel. Also 9398 is a really basic, but functional example. Quote
Essge Posted August 26, 2014 Author Posted August 26, 2014 I have made a lot of 4x4 before. Its not a big jump. Quote
Black-Build Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Maybe post some pictures from what you have right now? Quote
Essge Posted August 26, 2014 Author Posted August 26, 2014 I dont havething atm :P The axles are all in pieces. Quote
Zerobricks Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 You can use tatra style suspension, its robust and sturdy... Quote
Essge Posted August 26, 2014 Author Posted August 26, 2014 I dont like tatra style. I'am making pendular now, will see how it goes tomorrow :) Quote
Essge Posted September 3, 2014 Author Posted September 3, 2014 I made a 8x8 today with independent susp. Works very well. Rc buggy motor gear ratio: 27:1 (3:1-3:1-3:1) Quote
VKTechnic Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I recognize those tires (and also the Traxxas ESC) Quote
Black-Build Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Nice! Are you going to make a body for it? Quote
Black-Build Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Zblj: I think he just used Atr's suspension from his volvo... Quote
Essge Posted September 4, 2014 Author Posted September 4, 2014 (edited) You're right. I thank atrx for det suspension. Its very good. My 8x8 and his 8x8 Volvo is almost the same. Mine is 2 studs wider. When I was trying to climb a rock today, I broke 2 of those knob gears. 1 in the back and another in the front. I made a cover for det truck and I'll make a cab next week :) Edited September 4, 2014 by Essge Quote
Zerobricks Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 If you break gears than you need to improve it... I dont let my models break gears! Quote
AndyCW Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I'd like to know how you managed to break a knob gear. That takes a ridiculous amount of force. I've broken all kinds of gears in developing stuff, but never a knob gear. v/r Andy Quote
Zerobricks Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I managed to break a knob gear manually once... Must have been defective. Quote
Technyk32231 Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 I managed to break a knob gear manually once... Must have been defective. Ever got your hand caught in a pair of them driven by 2 XL motors? Quote
zenzic Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Ever got your hand caught in a pair of them driven by 2 XL motors? Now I'm tempted to give that a try this evening. Quote
Zerobricks Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 I raise you by 4 XL motors: Can you say OUUUUCH! Quote
Essge Posted September 5, 2014 Author Posted September 5, 2014 I was climbing a rock and some of the wheels got stuck. The motors are geard 27:1. Thats why the knob gear broke. I know now what is the limit. The truck is not a 4x4 crawler, its an offroader. I wish i could get metal lego gears. I will never try to climb a rock like that again. Normal offroading next time :) Quote
AndyCW Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 27:1 with buggy motors is obscene and your motors are running at full power. Yikes! I once got a finger caught in a 24:8 portal hub. It drew blood v/r Andy Quote
andythenorth Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 For climbing stuff, I'm figuring you can have too much motor power. I have an 8x8 with one L-motor per PF wheel, on a moderate reduction. It doesn't seem to need more power. Quote
PROlego Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 (edited) I've broken 1 of my two knob gears just by pushing a motorized model (driven from a non geared M-motor) by hand 15 centimetres. Edited September 5, 2014 by PROlego Quote
