I recently purchased the 2014 lego cargo train 60052. I had an issue with no power from battery box. I tried 2 different sets of new duracell aaa batteries, still nothing. Went back to toys r us and they happily replaced battery box and included a set of toys r us batteries that worked. On returning home I popped the duracells back in and not working..on closer inspection the duracell batteries positive tips are shorter than regular batteries and aren't making contact...thought I'd mention in case anyone else gets same problem..cheers

Same problem here. Bought the cargo train set 60052 as a reward for my young daughter, discovered it took 9 AAA batteries so I had to duck out to the shops at dinner time to avoid disappointing her, unfortunately I bought the infamous Duracell AAA's with the large positive posts, went through the whole process of building the loco and putting the batteries in... tried to turn it on and NOTHING. The last couple of hours have been spent troubleshooting the whole electronic unit out of the train, eventually swapping out batteries (for another packet of duracells though, doh!), and finally found this forum thread and tried some other branded batteries which I took out of TV remotes in the house. They didn't have enough juice to run the train but at least the battery box turned on! So I had to carefully cut some strips of aluminium foil and fold them into the positive end of the battery box to use the Duracell's again. Daughter went to bed hours ago disappointed, but at least she'll be able to run the train in the morning. Massive design flaw by Lego to put the metal contacts behind a plastic cage!!!!

All my recent train mocs use the Lego Power Function AAA Battery Box and I use Duracell Ultra AAA Batteries in the battery box and never had a problem, always works for me, never had a problem.

First, take a 7/32 drill bit and ream the holes by hand, clean it up with a razor knife/hobby knife and 3/16 drill bit. I repeat this over and over ever time I see it in a thread, just be done with it.

Do it once, clean it up and you are good to go with any type of battery you will ever put in it.....................................

This is a lot simpler and a lot more fool proof then aluminum foil................
