Interesting quote from Lego design VP Matthew James about creating sets for movies and the difficulties they experience when reference materials change (read: The Hobbit)

In 2015 there are some massive movies that fans are pretty sure you guys are going to be doing. For example, you guys have the Star Wars license, there’s Star Wars: Episode VII, there’s Avengers 2, there are some huge properties coming. You’ve already mentioned how long the process usually is, can you talk about the challenge of creating LEGO for properties like that where there is an element of secrecy. How much are the studios actually letting you see?

ASHTON: It kind of varies properties to properties but generally it’s very much dependent on the filmmaker’s schedule and what assets are available when and what can be released it in many respects. Obviously, a film studio is not going to re-plan their entire movie shoot to fit into when we need certain assets delivered to us. In many instances they’re really, really great at pulling stuff the minute that they’ve got it and other instances we might have to work from really preliminary sketch material and of course, when the toy comes out it won’t be 100% accurate to what it looks like in the movie in those cases. All the studios just do the best that they can to accommodate getting as much material out.

And of course, there’s things that will be edited and colors changed in post-production and everything along the way. We may have found that when a model ends up in production in one color and then you see it in the movie, it may not look the same once the final movie comes out. Especially now, everything’s digital in movies as well because filmmakers can tweak a movie right up until pretty much two days before it’s launched and of course our product’s locked a year before that. It does cause a few problems in certain instances but we’ve really found that everybody just does their upmost because also the studios want to make sure that they get the best products out there as well. So, they generally do whatever they can to get the materials to us in a timely manner as possible.

It's a fantastic article! I posted a link to it in the General Lego discussion forum as well. Definitely should be read by every AFOL.

Thanks The Chosen 1! The article was by far the most in depth interview with a Lego official that I have ever read. They did a great job of answering many of the questions that I have been wondering about for years.

Sorry if this has already been asked, but does anyone know when/where the Legolas Greenleaf bag will be sold?

It hasn't come out in the United States or Canada yet. :sceptic:

Not sure for the rest of the world, though.

I heard reports of it being sold in some shops in Denmark and possibly Netherlands!

I found 4 of them in France.

Too bad that it won't be in the U.S. for a while :cry2: . I have all the other sets, and and all the pieces to the polybag except for the hoop for the flick missile. I might just buy it off of E-bay.

@Legoman123: They'll be released in October (instead of December like the previous Hobbit sets were), there's no LOTR summer wave and they've been on display at the London Toy Fair, so I say it's very likely

ALright thanks for the info. :classic: Now I really can't wait for NYTF! Edited by Legoman123

Lets just hope they allow photography of the new sets.

theyhave never taken secret stuff to new york toy fair before (i believe), everything on display have been photographable, and crowd control might be a little more annoying there.

If they bring hobbit sets to nytf I'm sure people will be photographing them.

They have, unfortunately. The Toy Story 3 sets and Iron Man 3/Man of Steel sets were secret the year they came out.

oh, well then i don't think we'll see hobbit sets next week. unless they really is making sets based on dos alone.

On the subject of polybags, I hope that next wave they make a dwarf soldier one! It would be a neat way to armybuild them. For the other one they could use the old Bolg head mold (depending on if they had started making it or not) and call it "Orc Captain".

Or, since Saruman won't be in the DG set, TLG might put him in a polybag.
