SkaForHire Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 Ok things have changed since I visited a couple weeks ago... I was wondering what happened to the stickied fleet listing page. I think that was a fun page, and a community page. (yeah yeah, and I started it!) lol Perhaps it could get a link on the web page? just wondering, because it was the only page that allowed people to compare their fleets idealy in the future everyone could have a link to pictures of their fleets or something I guess. Governor Mister Phes Posted April 14, 2007 Governor Posted April 14, 2007 I think the fleet listing has been moved for some reason, probably because it was confused with an index thread. I think it would be better in the discussion forum so I'll move it back. Quote

BUT... since that would require many people to come to conformity and make a page or supply information for a template... it would probably take a while to do or to get operable where more than a handful of us have things up.... So... I think you are right for the time being it should just be a stickied topic, but I really think in the future when things are running smoother there should be some sort of presentation of the pirates community.... Hmm It would be interesting to see pics of people's current fleets. Maybe another index X-D An index of your current ships (oh yeah and forts) built and have the discussion to keep the Index Maker up to date when stuff is completed (or under construction) or gets destroyed for other things. Now we an actual website we have more flexibity. I thought for an interesting feature we could have personal indexes which would include fleets, bases, whatever someone has created. But to make it more interesting I was thinking about creating a map and each user would pick a site to start a settlement. So in the beginning everyone starts off with a "plot" and as they added to their index the title of their settlement would get upgraded, so next would come "Camp" (I.e. SkaForHire's Camp), then Shanty, right upto "Mansion". (I've lifted this idea out Tropico 2) However, keeping it updated would have to be done manually and we'd need to develop a fair system for what contribution constituted to how far they upgraded. For those who didn't want to participate in the map we would still have a textual list of all the personal indexes. Quote

Kewl Would you be the only on that's able to do that manually? P Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted April 15, 2007 Governor Posted April 15, 2007 In the beginning it would be only me, but I may be able to set it up so others can make updates. The average user wouldn't be able to otherwise I'd have to give everyone access rights to that part of the website and not everyone is competent in web design so that could be diasterous. The other option is for someone to develop a web interface but I don't have those skills and anyone who does probably wouldn't have the time to go ahead with it. Quote
SkaForHire Posted April 15, 2007 Author Posted April 15, 2007 I like where you are going with this Phes. An alternative, that I suggested about a month ago was that we make a world map or maybe even a sea map with everyone "claiming" territories... and then we would do about the same thing as you are suggesting with upgrading the map... and then it would probably link to a template site with fleet listings, fort listings, a few pictures, and then an external link to the person's website for those who have it or want to tell a story or something. Though I suppose the template page could have a blurb section for a 500 word abstract about your storyline or something.... anyway this sounds promising... as soon as my blood thesis is done I would be willing to help out on it. EDIT: Actually if it was decent enough people could claim sea zones with their fleets, and wage some sort of online war with one another for pirate booty! (I',m actually being kinda sarcastic, but it would be sorta fun) Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted April 15, 2007 Governor Posted April 15, 2007 The problem with a world map is it would be too big to update manually. The area needs to be a limited size otherwise its going to be a headache, the map that Dreamweb scanned months ago might be ideal for this purpose. Each users "plot" would be represented by an icon or generic graphic depending on their current status. This way it could be easily exchanged when they advance to the next rank, thus minimising the manual labour. Yes, it would be awesome if users could claim sea zones and wage war online but that's just too complex to be done manually, well at least for me. Of course, if you're a programmer who can confidently design an automated system incoporating these features into a world map then disregard everything I've mentioned about limitations X-D Good luck with your thesis!
