ALittleSlow Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 any instuctions for some gbc modules available? im out of ideas There are some examples here, categorized by mechanism: http://brickwiki.info/wiki/Category:Great_ball_contraption Quote
ALittleSlow Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 White, unpainted balls are available on LUGBULK this year. The price is not yet available, at least in the US. Quote
9v system Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 There are some examples here, categorized by mechanism: http://brickwiki.info/wiki/Category:Great_ball_contraption Thanks could you ask Steve if he can provide the Leo cad file for this module? I want to build it http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1732084 Quote
ALittleSlow Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 Also, there are 19 more GBCs (currently) in my plus some tutorials in my (in case you want to add them to the wiki) I've enjoyed (and subscribed, I believe) to your playlist. Because BrickWiki isn't a MOC site, I don't think I should try to create an exhaustive GBC Index there. I have been slowly adding exemplars, however. I could use help adding more or at least identifying the good examples. I think the good examples are those that are original, well-executed, and/or well-documented. Still I think it would be better if there were a place we could collaboratively build (and maintain) a GBC index. Maybe even as a theme, category or tag under some existing MOC bin? Quote
ALittleSlow Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 There might be videos on youtube from that same event. It is from the Crate Contraption by Gustav Jansson, David Schilling and Patrik. video: more images: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=277534 There's an E-mail for Gustav at the end of the video. DrJB Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 You need to save that file, then open it in a program that can read it e.g., LDraw Quote
9v system Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 looking at the servo motor topic go me thinking what if the servo motor can be used to sort GBC balls?. it seems logical to use it as the sorter motor. any ideas? 9v system Quote
DrJB Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 (edited) Akiyuki did something similar but he used an NXT brick. Now, what u're thinking (I'm guessing) is to push the motor left or right depending on whether the ball is soccer/basketball. But then, what do you use to detect the ball color? Surely some sort of light sensor and thus the NXT/EV3 seems unavoidable (back to Akiyuki) Edited January 1, 2015 by DrJB Quote

pcfw Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 Related to Lego, I have found that it stands for Great Ball Contraptions. I tried google "define gbc lego" but only found lots MOC (My Own Creation) but what differentiate them from other Lego contraptions? Apologies if my question is too basic but I am now only starting to get serious with Lego, especially Wedo and later Mindstorms. Quote
pcfw Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 Found this: with little robots chasing after a ball. So GBC is anything that involves a ball? If so, then the Motion sensor application in modified goalkeeper robotic game can qualify as a GBC? Quote
PROlego Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 (edited) In that video GBC goes from 3:08 to the end. The "football game" at the start is called Techball. A GBC (Great Ball Contraption) is a group of machines (modules) designed to pick the balls and take them to the next machine in a complicated way. All the modules form a circle so the balls return to the start. This is an example of a very large GBC: All the modules follow some rules to be compatible but you can make them as simple or complicated as you want. It's a callenge for builders since balls phisics are not as predictable as they seem to be and they have to be running for hours without getting balls stuck anywhere in the module. Sorry for my poor English if there's something you don't understand I can try to explain you. EDIT: This is the GBC General Discussion topic: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=88296 Edited December 26, 2014 by PROlego Quote
pcfw Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 Who first start using GBC and how did it become widely used? Forgot to thank you, excuse my bad manners. Your English is perfect. I have no problem understand you. Quote

Captainowie Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 See also http://www.teamhassenplug.org/GBC/ for the original specification. A GBC module would be ideal for someone interested in Mindstorms or Wedo and wants to do more than just vehicles. Owen. Quote
DrJB Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 (edited) Who first start using GBC and how did it become widely used? GBCs have been labeled/categorized as Rube-Goldberd machines. From what I read, the phenomenon started in the US, but quickly spread worldwide, and now there are large GBC display areas at every major Lego 'convention'. Perhaps the earliest original/published designs were by philo (www.philohome.com), who soon after publication of the 'standard', designed several modules, and hobbyists have since then copied/modified/adapted them. Certainly the most original/prolific GBCs we owe today to a young man from Japan (Akiyuki). Check the links below, and you can find many more on youtube. A word of caution in closing: GBCs tend to be rather addictive ... so tread with caution. http://www.philohome.com/gbc/gbc.htm Edited January 1, 2015 by DrJB Quote

I think these are the correct products. Double check the official specs to be sure before you buy, though. Soccer/Football/Futbol Ball Basketball (I'm not seriously suggesting you do this, but if you want the originals you have limited options.) Edited December 27, 2014 by m0dulo Quote
DrJB Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 I'd like to know where to get those balls from? Amazon? H I vaguely recall someone got similar sized balls from China for fairly cheap. There is a thread on this somewhere on this forum. I'll never pay $1 a piece for such balls. Quote
