Athos Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Here is the beginnings of a Viking village I've been working on, that I thought I'd share with you. I still need a few more houses, to make the roofs more appealing and landscape. http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...ss/village1.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...ss/village2.jpg Steve Quote
highlandcattle Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Nice, i would use green baseplates because vikings didn't live in the desert! I think you should try a viking roundhouse and they didn't have chimneys Quote
Hobbes Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Nice, i would use green baseplates because vikings didn't live in the desert! I agree, the baseplates alone make it look like they're in the desert. But if you add more "ground" (like rocks or something) it could look like a beach. Maybe that's what Athos has in mind since it's a WIP ;-) I think you should try a viking roundhouse and they didn't have chimneys They didn't? Interesting... I never noticed when watching Wickie ;-) Quote
hewkii9 Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 It looks nice, though I think I've seen that building with the plants on the roof before... didn't you try this once? Quote
Athos Posted March 12, 2007 Author Posted March 12, 2007 It looks nice, though I think I've seen that building with the plants on the roof before... didn't you try this once? Someone else did one similar as well, but I have shown that one before. I've just added some of the other buildings around it. Nice, i would use green baseplates because vikings didn't live in the desert! I'm torn between tan and green. I'm thinking about sticking with the tan plates and then putting a bunch of green landscaping all around and then add some snow drifts. That way the tan will look like paths and dead grass. I think you should try a viking roundhouse and they didn't have chimneys No chimneys? Well I don't think I'm going to change it now. A round house would be challenging, which is probably why I haven't done it yet. Steve Quote
Legocastlegirl Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 I like the idea of the houses very much. Especially the one under the table. In my opinion you should change the baseplates to green, or maybe you made a landscape with green and brown bricks, i think i small creek will be a nice detail, woman could wash the clothes there for example or you can put a little boat on it. But i like the idea of the Village! Greetings Sandra Quote
Athos Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 Well, since everyone was commenting on their lack of enthusiasm for the tan base plates, I thought I'd landscape it up a bit and see if it changed any minds. So here you go: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...ss/village3.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...ss/village4.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...ss/village5.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...ss/village6.jpg Steve Quote
Hobbes Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Well, since everyone was commenting on their lack of enthusiasm for the tan base plates I didn't! ;-) Because what you showed in the new pics is exactly what I thought you would do. Looks great *y* Quote
Wobo Ihi Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 What a neat Viking creation! Is that a barrel o' mead I see behind the houses? Quote
Norro Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Looks great with the addition of landscaping! Good work! God Bless, Nathan Quote
Legocastlegirl Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 It looks really nice with this green landscape. The MOC looks more animated. Good Job *y* Greetings Sandra Quote
Starwars4J Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Wonderful job, athos! Not that...it wasn't wonderful before, bah, you know what I mean :-P It looks so alive now! Quote
Athos Posted March 15, 2007 Author Posted March 15, 2007 Here are some new pictures. I ran out of green plates and had to rework the landscaping a bit. I also added two of the buildings to the scene. Also if you look closely you'll see Odin, a Valkyrie and a Dwarf... http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...ss/village7.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...ss/village8.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...ss/village9.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...s/village10.jpg Steve Quote
Capn Frank Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 This is a good idea for a MOC Athos. I like the tan base plates with green landscaping plates. My favorite house is the one on the bottom right of this pic: I like the use of the flower stems on the two roofs. Gives it a lot more realism. Good job. P Quote
Athos Posted March 15, 2007 Author Posted March 15, 2007 My favorite house is the one on the bottom right of this pic: Mine too. :-) I think I'll try to do a few more like it, though the scarcity of dark tan plates makes making any other sized houses hard. Steve Quote
Capn Frank Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Mine too. :-) I think I'll try to do a few more like it, though the scarcity of dark tan plates makes making any other sized houses hard.Steve what about other structures like small sheds or barns or something? P Quote
Zaktan of the Shadows Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Quite cool. I like the detail. The first house with the weeds on it is the best. -ZotS Quote
Athos Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 what about other structures like small sheds or barns or something?P The dark tan plates only come (or at least I only have them) in long 12 (I think) x 8, which really limits the size and shape of a building. I am thinking about doing up a barn tonight though. And perhaps a blacksmith. Steve Quote
Athos Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 Well since I've run out of green plates, which pretty much puts a stop to any landscaping, this will probably be the extent of the village for a while (quite a while I imagine). Guess I'll have to work on the interiors of some now... http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...s/village11.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...s/village12.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...s/village13.jpg http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Athos/In...s/village14.jpg Steve Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted March 16, 2007 Governor Posted March 16, 2007 You've got quite a nice Viking Village happening here Mr Athos! How much bigger would you like to make it should the pieces you need become available in the future? Quote
Athos Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 You've got quite a nice Viking Village happening here Mr Athos! How much bigger would you like to make it should the pieces you need become available in the future? If pieces were not an option, I'd like to approximately double or triple it. I'd also like to put a wall of rock and ice (burps) around the back of it. And I probably should have thought of this earlier, but I would like to raise it all by one brick so as to be able to put a stream or seashore in it. Steve Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted March 17, 2007 Governor Posted March 17, 2007 I noticed you're using new grey or "bley" for the roofs of two of the dwellings, is this because of limited piece selection or because of conscious choice? Personally I think that shade of grey looks too metallic but perhaps its only the lighting giving it that extra shine. Quote
Athos Posted March 17, 2007 Author Posted March 17, 2007 I noticed you're using new grey or "bley" for the roofs of two of the dwellings, is this because of limited piece selection or because of conscious choice? Some of both. I wanted some variation in the roof colors, so I didn't use the dark tan on all of them. And I didn't like brown or tan because the buildings and ground were already that color. And I didn't feel like digging out my old greys, since I'd already started in with the new colors. Steve Quote
