runmymouth Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 First of all I appologize if this is the wrong place and please direct me to the correct place to ask these questions. I am looking around bricklink trying to figure out which colors of things I want to order and specific pieces I want to order to help build my own more realistic looking castles and scenes. I have order 1k each of trans-clear plate round clear, dark blue, light blue for water effects. I am looking now to what wall colors and pieces I would want. I am seeing Dark Bluish Grey, and light bluish grey, and Dark green for walls? Are these the color of the castle tiles I get in Helms deep and the castle sets? Are there other base colors anyone would recommend? Really just looking to get some knowledge on what parts I should be looking for to pick up. Quote
Captain Settle Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 Helms Deep uses olive green for moss as well. Quote
runmymouth Posted August 5, 2013 Author Posted August 5, 2013 Helms Deep uses olive green for moss as well. I believe that is dark green as there is no olive green option for 1x1's. Or maybe are they just 1x2's? I do see those in 1x2s. Quote
soccerkid6 Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 Sand green is what helms deep uses for moss. Quote
runmymouth Posted August 5, 2013 Author Posted August 5, 2013 Sand green is what helms deep uses for moss. Thanks for the info! Added that item to my wishlist. Side question. Is it worth shipping pieces overseas or is that really too expensive? Quote
Mike S Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 There are so many different styles and color options for castles, I wouldn't even know where to begin. First of all I would browse different Lego castle builds that have been built over the years and choose the style you want to build. From there you can decide the colors and piece types you will need to stock up on. Quote
The_Cook Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 You can use the set inventories on Bricklink to find out what bricks are used in each set and then use Bricklinks colour listings to find out what other pieces are available in that colour. Brickset also has an inventory for each of the modern sets vehicle cross links through to TLGs own inventory and ordering system but it doesn't have the colour listing pages that Bricklink has. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I think you need to decide what style you want to go for before you start building a lot. I've seen so many variations of color with castle walls and even water effects, that it really depends on the builder. Some can make it work, others can't. With that said, traditionally it seems light gray or light blue-gray are really common for castle walls. And you can add in some dark blue gray accent colors. Tan and dark tan are great options as well (think Hogwarts, which a lot was filmed outside a real castle) Have fun. I'd suggest trying to find a pick a brick wall before ordering too many of those small pieces since you can get them dirt cheap in a PAB cup compared to ordering on bricklink. Quote
Itaria No Shintaku Posted August 7, 2013 Posted August 7, 2013 I might suggest adding dark tan (sand yellow for the TLC colors) in some spots. It makes a "dirt" effect, expecially on the lower parts of the castle, plus it makes an excellnt "ground". I personally dislike reddish brown for ground. You can also use tan (brick yellow) for sand, if you want to make a beach. Another color I love in this context is medium dark flesh (medium nougat), it has a lot of uses too but that's quite expensive. Quote

My first month or two of ordering may skip those colors because of costs, but I will probably add those as a 3rd month of ordering stuff. I think I am going to do elevated base plates for more stability and the ability to modularize my creations more easily. Thanks for the advise and I will look for some medium dark flesh pieces occasionally to add color. I think you need to decide what style you want to go for before you start building a lot. I am looking through and I think I want to sort of follow a mixture between helms deep and the kingdoms joust castle look. Not so much the pure castle sets. Quote
