It's been almost 20 years since LEGO introduced the pinnacle of all Technic sets, the 8880 Super Car (IMO). I'm pretty sure this topic has come up before, and LEGO has introduced a number of super cars since the 8880, but none have come close to the level of complexity of the original. I've seen many MOC that are on the same level if not exceed the complexity of the 8880, but how many people can afford to drop that kind of money on the ridiculously high amount of parts? I'm really hoping LEGO would some day come up with a modern version of the 8880, in a Lamborghini shell!

The 8880 was more complex than it needed to be because of the limited amount of Technic parts at that time... It is also kind of heavy due to the studded build... But it was a really cool model that had a ton of cool features, but there were some things that I didn't like about it...

There is no doubt in my mind that a certain member of the Technic Design team is currently working on ideas for a new Supercar for the future... Unfortunately the new hubs kind of suck...

You brought up some good points. I just hope they don't regress and build something that's worse than the 8070. I mean it wasn't a bad supercar, but it wasn't as technic as I wanted a super car to be. I just hope they don't go the direction they did with the 42000 compared to the 8458. That was such a let down. I still can't decide if I want to pick up the 42000 or not.

I'm Totally Agree with you. Also there have to be an RC in my opinion (and that will be expensive   :sceptic::cry_sad: )

I don't think it has to be RC. As long as it is complex and realistic, I think manual functions are fine. It would also lower the cost (a lot). Maybe separate instructions for integrating PF?

I would like to see a new 8880 but at this time I think they would build something less technical and more beautiful from the outside, is fashion and what most people want today :hmpf_bad: .

I suspect that given the high cost of the PF system and the fact that the core target audience for Technic sets likes it, the Technic team is being asked to put PF in as many sets as possible (especially the big flagship top-of-the-line-most-expensive sets)

It would be better if they released Space Shuttle v2 - just saying...

Either or really, both would be excellent builds if designed right.

I'd like to see a modernized 8880 maybe with a few new parts, I'm busy making an 8448 with with 4 wheel steering and 4 wheel drive like an 8880 but its all stud less but the position of most bricks are the same.

However if lego do make a model it will probably have less functionality than some older technic sets.

I so want to get both 8880 and the space shuttle but they are currently out of my budget :(

Remember my cousin got the 8880 for his birthday when we were younger. It was an awesome set then and still is, even though he broke the white special wheel connectors on his while driving it offroad :P

Can't argue with you on that one. That's another epic set that I'd like to see updated.

I agree, I hope that the next Super Car doesn't have PF. If it will, the price will soar up and it will be less complex. What I'm hoping for is a completely manual model with plenty new parts concerning the gearbox, suspension, and drivetrain. Also the return of flex axles

They are pretty cheap here in Germany.

I posted this in another topic, is something like this to your liking?

8880 is a great example. Imagine a new supercar, in white or dark metallic grey, without the cluttered patchwork of panels (and NO COLOUR VOMIT!)but clearly defined, smooth lines making up a more bear bones but detailed, very low down and sleek/fast looking bodywork (with side vents, wing mirrors, etc), new 6 speed gearbox with lots of different sized synchros and a gearlinkage that manages to change 6 gears as nice and smooth and easy as 8880, new low profile, glossy black wheels and tyres (that actually look like real world supercar wheels and tyres) same diameter as the unimog but wider and very deep hubs (like 8448) so that the steering pivot can be mounted right inside the wheel, disk brakes visable through the spokes of the wheels, highly detailed engine with a really long, curvy chain on the front to look like the long cam belts on real engines and so on and so on, new diffs (see below) plus all the usual like suspention/steering. Bringing this post back on topic, if they came out with such a supercar, a true and worthy modern day 8880 (ie a huge leap forward in functionality, new parts and styling) then I really would not care what the piece count is, 1000, 3000, don't care just take my money!

They are, but the 40-50 year old import limit makes things expensive at times :( Found a nice german ebay seller but he hasn't got the 8880 and space shuttle :(

Yeah, like the 200 KR toll limit here in Norway. It's been on that level since the 70's if I recall correctly, but the problem is that 200 KR is less worth today than it was back then. Even small Technic sets aren't that far off. The Mini Container Truck in your avatar, 9390 Mini Tow Truck and the new 42001 Mini Off-Roader are all 100 KR, 42002 Hovercraft is 150 and 9392 Quad Bike and 42004 Mini Backhoe Loader are 200. And from those I've bought and those I can judge by pics, they're all relatively small. The toll limit is too low for the value of money today. Ours should be raised to at least 1000 KR.

Our silly limit stops most things :(

It's possible for TLG to make it happen. The parts i've come up with, along with a few others are parts that we've been waiting for for a long time and they would open a door to fantastic new sets with awesome, rock solid and authentic functionality without raising part counts to unecessarily high levels. Remember 8880 had around 1300 parts which is half that of this years crane, 8868 I think was under 1000 parts. Whilst I think around 2000 is a great number for flagships, 8880 and 8868 were still able to give us more new possibilities and innovations than 42009 at around 2600 parts. So with well designed new parts and more man hours given to the design process of both parts and sets to ensure their full potential (8480 took 3 designers and 80 working prototypes!), it all depends on if they decide to do it or not.

I would like to see bearing hubs, rigid link arms, solid steering and pivot points that arn't a mile away from the hub! All measures to reduce play in the suspension system. Not possible I know because it has to be a jack of all trades, still my dream.
