Mutant Orc Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 MY sister is really liking the Ice Cream truck now. I'm fond of the truck and the castle parts pack (as that is why I'll buy it) Quote
larsyuipo Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 all the set boxes are released! http://www.lego.com/en-us/movie/products/products/70813 Quote
just2good Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Ooh, boxes. Crap. The alt build make me want the Plumbing Plane set. Quote
Kez Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I love how these sets are a 2 in 1 design, great job lego and thanks for the images Quote
Haltiamieli Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 So 70812 and 70813 are NOT 2 in 1 builds even though they are clearly based on similar scenes as 70804, 70805, 70806 and 70811. That is kinda sorta cool, actually, as 70812 and 70813 obviously still have good assortment of pieces to make one's own alternative build. Boosting creativity! Or maybe alternative builds will be downloadable extra content? Didn't think I'd ever see a portable toilet in an official Lego set! Quote
Brickity Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Oh my Goodness!!! These are so awesome! Loving the ice cream truck, the "creative ambush" and the castle cavalry. Quote
Oky Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Neat! That exploding porta-potty in the plumber set is hilarious. But I wonder why the Creative Ambush doesn't have an alternate design? It seems possible to rebuild it into a Kebab stand and a saloon playset, so I wonder why it doesn't seem to include instructions for that. Same for Rescue Reinforcements. Oh well, if this movie teaches us anything, it's to use our imagination. Quote
Freddy Bricker Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Wow, great alternate builds, I keep loving this theme more and more. Anyone else notice the "vehicle stops frequently" sign on the recycling truck? It's little details like this that remind me why I love Lego. Also, are those new cones in the ice cream truck set? Ah why do I love this theme so much. Now the terrible Star Wars and Superheroes sets will do my budget some justice. Ooh, boxes. Crap. The alt build make me want the Plumbing Plane set. Yeah, I initially thought it was the worst of the wave (tied with the castle cavalry/podracer set). These alternate images confirm my disliking of the cavalry set, but TLG wins it with the alternate build for the plumber plane. But Cloud cuckoo palace is still hot on my list, is that strange? Quote

I agree that the others look easy to mod into their "mundane" forms though... Im most surprised that the designers didnt take this chance of a Transformers-like set for the fire mech. Edit: Huh, so Joe the Plumber made it into minifig form... Edited November 25, 2013 by Ardelon Quote
Piranha Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 The box art looks great, I love it. Those alternate builds for the "regular" models are all nice. The Ice Cream truck and Plumber truck are must haves, I don't think either have appeared as regular City vehicles in the past. Quote
LegoTrainFanatic Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I think there might be a new cone piece in the ice cream truck set, look closely at the guy in the truck. Quote
badbob001 Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 What is the red piece on the police car that shoots a flick-fire? My initial thought was that it was the same piece on Emmet's back, but probably not. Quote
Darkdragon Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I think there might be a new cone piece in the ice cream truck set, look closely at the guy in the truck. That part was introduced in a Friends set, it's a great part! Quote

I agree that the others look easy to mod into their "mundane" forms though... Im most surprised that the designers didnt take this chance of a Transformers-like set for the fire mech. I disagree. The plane has doors, a doorway with a saloon sign, and plenty of wall elements and plates, so I think there is definitely enough for a facade, plus a few interior pieces like a bar, a piano, and some tables. It's not as obvious as the other alternate models, but the parts are there, so you just have to get a bit creative. No offense, but I think you fail to see the point of this theme. True, it would have been cool if the fire mech was a transformer, but the theme of these sets is creativity, not transforming sets. Much like the movie, the sets are trying to teach builders that you shouldn't always follow the instructions and use your imagination to rebuild mundane sets into something new and interesting. If it was a transformer, it would already be both a fire truck and mech, so the builder wouldn't have to get creative to get a new model. So again, if you want it to be a fire truck or transformer, you can make it happen by thinking outside the instructions and coming up with your own design. Huh, so Joe the Plumber made it into minifig form... Apparently so. What is the red piece on the police car that shoots a flick-fire? My initial thought was that it was the same piece on Emmet's back, but probably not. I think it's just two of these back to back with one hole covered up. Quote

finnbricker Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Wow, the ice cream truck is awesome! And the portable toilet – who said there are no toilets in LEGO city? :) Those two cityesque sets are probably the ones I'll get and they'll fit in nicely in a modular town. I already have the present garbage truck and that'll do just fine. Quote
Oky Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 No offense taken, but if what you say was the case, why did the designers bother with alternate models on the other sets? To get the point across that yes, you can build alternate models with these sets, in case it wasn't obvious. Maybe they didn't include alternate instructions in the bigger sets to save paper. There is a code on the front of the fire mech that you can enter on a website, so maybe the alternate instructions for that set are online. Or maybe there is a picture of the alternate model on the back of the instructions and they leave it up to you to figure out how to build it like they did with sets back in the 90's. Quote
8BrickMario Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Oh, so the alternate builds are actually sane? Good for City fans, then. And that Ice Cream Truck is on my list! I think what Oky's trying to say is that the sets are demonstrating alternate builds to show the themes of miagination and creativity (and I think childhood as well). Transforming vehicles would probably lead to weaker structures and people saying that LEGO is taking ideas from other companies or being too cliche. It's more like CREATOR, just wackier! Quote
Oky Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 It's more like CREATOR, just wackier! Exactly. I wouldn't say that transforming vehicles have weak structures or are too cliched since TLG successfully makes transforming vehicles in their action themes all the time, but they just don't fit into this particular theme. I believe this theme is a unique cross between an action theme and Creator in that you actually have to use your imagination and build the alternate model of the set. Quote
jonwil Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Didn't think I'd ever see a portable toilet in an official Lego set! There was one in a City set a few years back (a tower construction crane). Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Oh, man....the two vans plus garbage truck are must gets for any city collector.....especially for the minifigs. Another portaloo.....sweet, though I feel it's been attacked by the Mythbusters ! Quote
Faefrost Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 I think the exploding toilet wins the award as best Lego build of the year. Can we get just that in a polybag set? Quote
Yooha Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Do I see right, that according to the box art, the saloon plane and the fire mech sets don't have an alternate model? Too bad. I hoped you can build an actual saloon and a kebab stall - the fire truck is not so exciting though. Quote
TAFOL Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 That part was introduced in a Friends set, it's a great part! Now if only that part was introduced in LBG and trans-light blue, we could make some icy caves. Quote
LEGO Family Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 So now i will need 3 of each set. two for display showing both of the alternate builds, and 1 for stockpiling. Damn you LEGO im gona need a lot of money for all off this. :D Anyhow, i love all the sets and im so looking forward to the movie. For people who live in Denmark, i was told yesterday that both the sets and the minifig serie will be for sale from 27th of december in the LEGO store in copenhagen. Quote
